December 2014 Moms

will baby have red hair ?

I'm due with my first the 30th of December and just wondering what the chances are that she will have red hair. I'm pale with red hair but the father is aboriginal with dark skin and dark hair. Is red hair even possible ?

Yes, red is more recessive than blond, so it can come from seemingly nowhere. Two blond parents can have a red-head. Two any colored hair parents can have a red-head.
Eta: it's possible, but like others said, no way to predict.

  • Yeah really not sure how any of us can help you. It could happen everyone is different even every pregnancy is different I've seen brothers and sisters who don't look anything alike because their parents have two very different genetic make ups.
  • I'm just wondering if being aboriginal the father would carry the red hair gene as I know both parents need to carry the gene

Actually they don't both have to. Genetics can be screwy

Google. There is a chart that explains the potential genetic possibility.

I am curious if my baby will have blue eyes but I did research on Google to find out the genetic probability.

Now if you want to provide a genealogy chart 3 generations back I might be able to take on an additional research project.

Their are plenty of red heads on my side of the family going back multiple generations but none what soever on my partners side , if that's what you were asking. :)>-

Not quite....but I really don't want that level of personal information. So let's make it easy here.

    Somewhere between 0 and 25%

  • Well that's a new one. I'm not sure about the red hair but can I interest you in an answer we really like around here? Ask your doctor. That probably won't help much but neither does asking an internet forum full of strangers.

  • My H and I both have red hair, this kid still might not. Isn't that part of the fun surprise when they're born?
  • I love genetic soup. All three of my kids have different noses. From the same parents!!!

As for the red hair, somewhere between 0 and 100%. Seriously, there's no way to tell.

  • High school biology would come in handy here. Or even 6th grade science class, really. Set up a punnett square. It's that easy. Your child has a 25% chance of having red hair. Your welcome.

  • My hubby has red hair and I had red hair when I was born but it's now blonde and very curly! I hope she has curly hair no matter the color!
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Yeah, I have no clue what the likelihood of this is, probably really low.  My UNeducated guess is that your child will not have red hair because red hair is generally recessive while dark hair is generally dominant, but that's based on what I learned in like...middle-school biology.  But yeah, who knows, your child could be a genetic anomaly...or a ninja turtle. Anything is possible, right?

I am giving this one a 6. It's bad but at least a little adorable.

Eta: because gingey babies are adorable.

I'd say at least an 8 for me, cause really?! If I could predict that I wouldn't be driving a car from '03, that's for sure! I'd be rich!!

I do love me some gingers though
