Surgery for lo

hi ladies, just wondering if any of you have a lo that has had surgery? I need to call and schedule ds surgery for this summer in the new year and I am dreading it. The surgery itself is not life threatening but it makes me sick to think of him being put under. How did you ladies get through it? I know the risks are low but the possibility that something could go wrong with the anesthetic haunts me every day.

Re: Surgery for lo

  • I haven't had a lo go through surgery but I'm very sorry you have to go through this. What is the surgery? Hugs mama.

  • My DS has had two sets of tubes almost 3 years apart and also had his adenoids taken out. It is hard but you have to remember that the doctors are doing what needs to be done to help your child. They will take extremely good care of your LO the whole time. :-)
  • My daughter, PF, has had the following:

    A sedated MRI
bilateral strabismus surgery (to correct crossing in both of her eyes)
    g-tube PEG placement
PEG replacement with a g-tube button

She will also have to be knocked out for dental visits.

  • I'm so sorry rsaj0807 that's sounds like a terrible experience. It's for my first son who will be 2.5 at the time of his surgery.
When he was born we couldn't circumcise him because they thought ha may have hypospadias. However no they believe it is because his foreskin is too tight so the surgery is to circumcise and possibly straighten his penis if the foreskin wasn't the issue. I would love to wait till he is older but the doctors say it's best to do when he is young.

So the surgery itself isn't what keeps me up at night as it shouldn't be problematic but the fact that he is being put under scares me to death. I have been dreading the surgery since he was born :(
  • I haven't gone through this myself, but my nephew had his tonsils removed at about 2.5. My brother is a doctor, so he wasn't too worried, but my SIL was super worried. She told me she's sure she suffered more than her son did! They bounce back so fast when they're little. I hope everything goes smoothly for your son and that you can remain as calm and peaceful as possible. Good luck!

  • DD had an adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy last May at age 2.5.  She was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and I knew that the benefits outweighed the risks. I was allowed to stay with her when they gave her some medicine to make her drowsy then she was in the OR for about an hour.  It was the longest hour of my life.  Her recovery was about two weeks long before she was back to her normal, happy, healthy self.  Would I do it again? Absolutely.  She doesn't have sleep apnea anymore, sleeps thru the night, doesn't snore and no longer sounds congested constantly.  I hope everything goes well for you and LO.  Good luck!!

  • I'm sorry you're going through this.
My cousins baby had to get major surgery at 1 day old - yep - 1 day old. His esophagus was connected to the wrong organ (I forget exactly) and obviously he was put under. Everything worked out great and he was and is fine.

I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but just wanted to share my only story about a LO being put under. I'm sure your LO will be in great hands - try to stay positive. Hopefully it'll be a quick surgery - your LO won't even remember it. Like many things, it's harder on us than it is on the babies.
  • I'm so sorry you have this stress! Any time surgery ("routine" or not) is involved with our LO's, it's stressful. I'm sorry I have not personally had to deal with this, but my nephew was adopted from S Korea and at the age of 2 1/2 had to have a circumcision. (Not typically done in SK, but he had infection issues from birth on and we didn't "get him" until he was 22 months old.) all I will advise, do your research!! My sister had no idea that when dr's told her "he'd bounce back quick" that it didn't mean things would go back to looking like "normal" as quick as he started acting normally. He was very swollen and bruised for about a month, but acted fine after 3 days. Just FYI. T&P's!
  • Thank you ladies. It makes me feel better about hearing all your positive stories. I'll have to try to remember the benefits outweigh the risks for him. But I truly appreciate all your supportive words!
  • I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. DD had a 7 hour surgery at 1 day old and has had 4 followup surgeries since then. Even though the later ones were outpatient, knowing that there is always potential for complications when in anesthesia is scary.  However, the anesthesiologists have always been so kind and reassuring when speaking with us before the surgeries. They answer your questions and assure you that they will be there watching the entire time for anything that seems abnormal. T&Ps to you and your LO!
  • Does your hospital have a Child Life Specialist on staff? They can be very reassuring to both patient and their families.

Luckily the surgery will be done at a children's hospital so everyone is specialized in paediatric care which gives me small peace of mind.
  • No experience with this (FTM), but my thoughts are with you and your family that all goes well (hugs).
