Cloth Diapering

barnyard/knock your socks off ammonia stink

I have a single diaper that has a major issue. I bought it used and only used it a handful of times when DD was little. I stuck it in my sell pile but grabbed it the other night because I haven't reassembled my clean fitteds. It's a TT fitted. I went to change DD in the morning and first noticed that it was stinking up the room barnyard style. I thought DD had pooped and was surprised to find no poop. But when I opened up the diaper it made my eyes water. The ammonia was so powerful.

I need to know how to strip the diaper. I Don't want it in with my other diapers because I don't have stink issues with my other diapers. Right now I have it soaking in a bucket of dawn and hot water. Should I bleach soak it? I've never had a stink issue like this before. Please help!

  • Awful is right, step away from the Dawn!

If you used a lot of Dawn already, do lots of manual rinses in the bathtub or sink or something before putting it in your washer.  I made the mistake, pre-this board, of putting a Tbsp or so of Dawn in my washer to strip my diapers.  After 20+ washes & rinses, I still had suds!

  • Thanks for the tips! It's rinsing now. Will do a bleach wash with socks. Thanks!

  • So it has been through two bleach loads and I think it's getting better, but I think it still having stink issues. I don't plan to keep it, but I want to try to get it to a good place before destashing for super cheap with full disclosure. What else can I try?

  • If bleach and hot water didn't get rid of the stink, then I think there is some mineral buildup that is holding onto the stink.  Bleach would have killed any bacteria.  And hot water would have gotten rid of detergent buildup.

I would suggest either washing soda or RLR.  That's just my opinion.  My no fail method of getting rid of stink is Funk Rock but you probably don't want to get a whole bag of that for 1 diaper you are probably going to sell anyway.
