Is anyone doing perineal massage at home?

I had read about performing perineal massage daily at home starting from about 34-35 weeks. I wasn't sure if it was worthwhile because I didn't have ay perineal tearing last pregnancy and it seems like a hassle. Is anyone planning on doing it though? Was it recommended by your provider? I think I might ask my OB about it at the nextt.

  • We're not doing this but we're having a RCS. I think I would do this if I were having a VBAC.

  • I'm not, but only because I didn't tear the last time.
If I were a FTM, I think I'd try it.

This is basically my thinking right now.

  • I am planning on it :-)

  • Nope. I'll have my midwife do it while I'm in labor and while I'm pushing.

  • Nope this time around. This is my fourth, though. I did try it with baby #1, I tore minimally (2 stitches). He was also 9lbs2oz so that could be why I tore as well. I guess it doesn't hurt to do the perineal massage... I just never liked the feeling when I was doing it myself *shudder*.
  • I want to try it, but I just haven't quite gotten around to it...........
  • I'm going to give it a shot, in a FTM so whatever I can do to prevent tearing...
  • We just talked about this in my birthing class tonight. The teacher explained that the theory is basically muscle memory, so stretching the area now will mean less stress on the area during birth. We are going to try to do it every day! I don't want any stitches and DH is happy to use it as foreplay :)
  • Yes, we plan to start next week (34 weeks)
  • I should, since I tore last time, but I've read that it isn't terribly comfortable and doesn't always help. Plus, I would need DH to do it, and while I'm sure he would, it's just not at the top of my list of things we need to do in a day.

  • My OB gave me this suggestion at the beginning of my 3rdT. She sent me home with a diagram and instructions. I looked it over with my husband. We are still having lots of sex so, I think that counts. It seems to me to stretch the same areas. He agrees of course.

I think it makes sense to at least "keep things loose" down there. Also, it seems it would not cause much harm to try.
  • I can barely wipe myself ... and I'm on pelvic rest so I know that would just lead to places we aren't allowed to go.

I was totally about to make a comment that I can't massage something I can't reach! Ha ha
  • Fisting is the clear and logical exorcise.

Fisting? I was gonna attempt multiple dildo's. no?
  • I talked to my OB about it and she said it wouldn't hurt to try it. But she warned me that if it feels good, we're not doing it right. DH and I tried it once (I'm having him do it bc I can't reach) and it did not feel good so I feel like we did it right. I want to make the time to do it more often in the coming weeks.
  • I heard something different. I'm no pro....it didn't hurt, it just wasn't feeling good.
  • My OB said not to, that it wouldn't make any difference and that she'll massage it during labor as I'm pushing to help prevent tears. I'm going for a VBAC after having a c section5 1/2 ago.
  • Hmm this sounds like something I might try bc it's pretty small down there and I don't want to tear:/ what does DH stand for?

Did you read the "New Click here FIRST thread"? It has a link to all the acronyms we use here. It might help you out.
  • DH stands for darling husband @beccs88‌
  • Or dumbass husband, depending on how you feel about him at the time.
  • It's something I plan on doing, mostly because I plan on a non-medicated birth, and this is my first one. I get to start a week from today! Yippee! It is irrelevant if my doctor thinks it helps or not, I'll still do it.
