High-Risk Pregnancy

XP from PAIF: issues weaning from progesterone

Hi Ladies,

I am a high risk pregnancy veteran with h/o baby with CHD, recurrent early pregnancy loss, secondary IF, coagulation issues (MTHFR / FVL) and autoimmune issues.  See siggy for full details.

I am here because was hoping to get some opinions from ladies who weaned off progesterone, especially IM progesterone.  I am just over 12 weeks and with this pregnancy I have been on IM progesterone, estrogen patches and prednisone, just like I did for preg w/ DS. who turned out perfect :).  For my previous pregnancy, my RE had me start weaning progesterone around 11 weeks and I was off by about 12 weeks.  I know this is quite typical and most everyone says they stopped progesterone without issues at the beginning of the 2nd trimester.

Well, this time around, my levels dropped pretty dramatically within about 4 days of decreasing from 1 cc to 0.5 cc of IM progesterone.  I am going back on 1 cc daily.  I am just wondering if anyone had a similar problem and if so, what was the resolution?  How long did you continue progesterone?  Is there anyone who continued until 14 weeks or even more?

TIA for any information you might have!
GL everyone!

Re: XP from PAIF: issues weaning from progesterone

  • I never had my progesterone tested after about 8 weeks so I don't know if mine went down once I started weaning off of it.

I've stopped using progesterone at around 14-15 weeks.  My doctor told me that continuing to use progesterone after around 10 weeks is like "peeing in the ocean" as the placenta should have taken over the production by that point and supplementing, to her, seemed pointless.  I kept using it, however, until I was past the point of my latest miscarriage which was 14 weeks.

I had a different doctor this last time around and also did a FET and my RE had me using progesterone in oil until 15 weeks.

    Good luck to you.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • @itsmevkb I find it so strange that some doctors take that approach.  I mean, obviously if my progesterone dropped significantly while weaning at 12 weeks it cannot be true that every placenta has "taken over production" of progesterone at that stage.  I am glad you decided to continue to 14 weeks.  I think that was a smart decision.  I was thinking of a friend I have who had two losses at around 17 weeks for unknown reasons and normal genetics.  I really have to wonder if sometimes hormonal issues contribute to these kind of early 2nd trimester losses.
