Wine Drinkers, come in!

So I am a big white wine fan, and I tend towards the sweeter wines, but I love a dry Riesling as well. I really want to transition to reds because now that I am not pregnant I would love to have a glass in the evenings, but I don't need all the sugar in the sweet whites and I would like to be more open to reds in general. My hubby forced himself to switch a couple years ago and now he prefers red, and my mom did the same thing. Any suggestions on gateway reds?

Re: Wine Drinkers, come in!

  • I am not a big fan of sweet white wine so I don't know how much I consider these as gateway wines (love the term!) -- but my favorite reds are: Italian reds (barbera, sangiovese, barolo), malbec, and a pinot noir.  A barbera or a malbec would be easier drinking on you than a barolo or a pinot.

White alternative -- I love me some Torrontes. It's not supersweet, but yummy.  It's pretty much the only white I drink.

    Now I'm thirsty....

  • Not gonna lie... I just mix the red with the white. No class baby. Perfect gateway.

  • I don't like red wine, generally.  I have too much of a sweet tooth.  But Black Mesa Winery in New Mexico makes a red that I love.  It's called Black Beauty Chocolate Dessert Wine.  Enough said.
I had a chocolate desert wine over thanksgiving.. it tasted like a tootsie roll pop. Not a fan LOL

  • I always hated red wine. Tasted like copper, yuck. Then I went to a family member's house, and they happen to be Very Well To Do. Like, they own race horses for a hobby, and they don't fly commercial. (They're super super nice though!) So anyway, I took a glass of red wine when it was offered, and WOW! It was great! So it turns out I don't hate red wine, I just hate red wine that costs less than $50 a bottle.

So - my first advice would be to buy wine I can't afford. But barring that, asking the wine guy at a good wine store would be your best bet. He'll know what questions to ask to determine your taste and how to steer you.

  • I'm weird and only like red. White is just too sweet! I force myself to like cheep wine. ;) I'd say try a Cabernet? I prefer dry, and the drier the better for me. I like Shiraz, Cab, malbec, Merlot, and Cab Sauvignon.

  • Red has given me terrible panic and anxiety in the past so I steer clear now and only have Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay.  However, when I drank red I liked Syrahs and Pinot Noirs.  You might try a Pinot Noir to start.....happy tasting!

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • Thanks ladies! My parents always have wines I can't afford so I guess I need to start sampling when they come to visit or when we go there!

Do you have a Trader Joe's near you?  They do wine tasting on Saturdays and Sundays.

Yes, I do! I didn't know this, what a wonderful piece of information, thank you!

  • For a cheaper 'gateway' red, try a red blend like Menage a Trois.  Pretty smooth for a wine that won't break the bank.
