Little Luxuries (NPR)

I was listening to NPR recently and they had someone on there who was saying it's good to have little luxury items in your life because you feel you are indulging, but it's small so chances are it won't put you in debt.  She argued that it helps to curb bigger spending habits.  Thought that was interesting.  So what's your splurge or little luxury?

Mine is Starbucks, either a soy latte or this time of year a pumpkin spice latte.

Re: Little Luxuries (NPR)

  • My glasses (as in, the ones I drink out of.)

A set of 4 or 8 fancy glasses isn't all that expensive in the long run, but it's a taste of luxury every time you go get something to drink.

  • Mine is Starbucks, too. I get hooked on iced coffee in the summer.

  • I get lunch with a friend every other Friday which is such a nice treat on so many levels. Nothing expensive ever, but it's not a salad or leftovers at my desk while I continue to work.

I also sometimes buy kombucha or fresh juices, especially since I've cut back on my Starbucks habit.

  • On-sale video games. Sometimes a $30 game will go down to $5 on Steam. I'm hooked on new games.

  • Skin care products for my eyes, I am willIng to pay damn near anything not to have dark circles...

    Stop counting crayons, just draw

  • Gel manicures and every two weeks, and pedicures. I certainly don't need it but it makes me happy and it makes me feel good.

Oh yes, that's another one!  I feel like when you think of it in terms of time spent doing fun things or doing meaningful things with your family, it's worth every penny and then some!
  • My gel manicures, coffee, and candy.

  • Mine has always been fancy cocktails or good scotch...guess those are out :( it always made me feel fancy...and also drink less because of the extra price. DH can enjoy his bottle of Talisker 30 year himself...poo.

At least I still have the Amish Market (well I will when morning sickness leaves!) It might not be expensive, but it's not required to buy an iced coffee pretzel wrap and apple cider donut every single saturday, and it's certainly a splurge on calories!
  • Shoes and makeup. If I am having a bad day, it's always a coin flip between Sephora and DSW.
  • Really good coffee. We have a roaster nearby that sells the most amazing beans but they are pretty expensive so it usually means I drink less coffee overall.

This is mine, too.  Once month for deep cleaning.  Sooo worth it.

  • My cleaning lady once a month as well :) she does wonders on the deep cleaning...then the roomba gets deployed every day due to the fur child.
  • Pedicures and high quality makeup.
  • Bath n Body Works body wash and hand soaps! Sounds weird but we are farmers and live on the other side of the world (NZ) so these little bottles cost me a fortune in exchange rate and shipping... However when you come in from the farm they smell like pure heaven and last on your skin for ages! We don't have any brands over here where the smell even comes close!
  • Bumble & bumble shampoo and conditioner. So expensive but $50 worth lasts at least 6 months and it's an every-other-day luxury. Plus usually family pitches in to buy it for me for Christmas and my birthday so it isn't coming out of the family budget.

  • I get a manicure every few weeks, and have since I finally gave up the nasty nail-biting habit a couple years ago. If it keeps me from regressing to nail-biting, it's totally worth it. And they look great.

@MittenMomma Any product recommendations to alleviate dark circles? I tend toward them a little and with a little one on the way, I can't imagine they're going to improve after July. :)

  • For me it's probably our household food. There is a lot of time where money is tighter than other times, and we may not be able to go out or spend any extra...but the one thing we always budget well for is our food. We eat all three meals at home, so it's nice to be able to enjoy things we love without the cost of going out. If we are going to spend most of our time at the house, I love to have the food we enjoy, rather then cutting down on food to be able to go out or something. :) Also, every once and a while, we splurge on something to add to our household entertainment, such as a sound bar for the tv or nice drink glasses. It makes being home a lot more enjoyable!

  • I've cut back since becoming pregnant on little things like Ulta splurges but I will not compromise on getting my hair done. Every 8 weeks, getting highlights, lowlights, a trim, and a good wash and blowout is like therapy.
