Weight Gain. Seriously.

Re: Weight Gain. Seriously.

  • If your OB hasn't showed any concern this far I would worry. I gained 60 and my OB wasn't concerned at all. Every pregnancy is different. Don't stress about the numbers on the scale.

  • I'm 37 weeks and have gained 30 pounds so far, 10 of that was in one month alone; (and it keeps steadily going up). I asked my doctor and she wasn't concerned at all. She said as long as baby is still growing and I'm measuring right then I have nothing to worry about. Makes me feel better because I just keep watching the scale keep going up, but I know my baby is healthy so that is all that matters.
  • Andplusalso people will tell you hard it is to lose baby weight. I was back to post partum weight 2 months later. If you exercise and eat healthy it come off rather quickly. Again don't stress to lose the weight as everyone is different.
  • You're 29 weeks pregnant and have gained 27 lbs. I think the recommended is 19-25 lbs at this point, so you aren't far off at all. I remember reading that growth spurts in the 2nd trimester are a sign of a very healthy baby. Weight gain typically slows during the 3rd trimester so it's pretty unlikely you will gain 10 lbs every month from here on out. If you're eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise, then your body is just gaining what it needs and there is no reason to feel the way you do. You're growing a baby! :)

I get being freaked out with a first pregnancy, especially if you've battled with your weight in the past. I experienced a big growth spurt during the 2nd trimester where I gained 10 lbs in 4 weeks. It was shocking to me because up to that point I hadn't really gained anything. It was hard to see that number jump up to higher than I've ever been and it took a second to remind myself that my body is doing something awesome and weight gain is a sign that everything is going good! Weight is never a permanent thing and right now a lot of the weight you are seeing on the scale is not even fat/weight that will stay with you. Your blood volume, placenta, heavy uterus, excess fluids, and baby take up the majority of it.

Treat yourself and your body well and trust that it's gaining what you need for a healthy baby. We all have different bodies and different #s on the scale, but you definitely aren't alone in feeling this way.

  • You are making a person - those stupid charts that show a steady weight gain progression are BS. You will gain in fits and starts as your body adjusts to being pregnant. Stay active, eat healthy, and try not to stress about the scale.

I gained 50 lbs with my first pregnancy and lost it all easily without trying, one of my best friends is 8 weeks postpartum and EBFing and she weighs 10 lbs more than she did the day she went into labor. Bodies are weird and only get weirder during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Try not to stress about it until after the first three months postpartum. Around the 3 month mark is when your metabolism gets its act together a bit and that's when you can take stock and make plans.

Thank you all! I really appreciate the helpful feedback. I just know it's not healthy to diet during pregnancy.. so I'm trying to maintain the weight I'm at instead of losing it.
There is a difference between dieting and changing your eating habits. I honestly do know people who eat perfectly balanced meals and still pack on more than the recommended amount in pregnancy because their body needs it. Like PP said, bodies are weird. You can absolutely change your eating habits to make sure that what you are gaining is truly baby weight. Lots of whole foods, cut out the junk or take out, and try to limit sweets to once a week or so. Some women eat healthy for their baby and start exercising when they never did before and find that they lose weight during pregnancy. This isn't dangerous. It is dangerous to start cutting calories or popping diet pills but that goes without saying.

I really like my fitness pal. I set it to the gain weight mode and log my food so I can make sure I'm getting a balanced diet, plenty of protein for all of the baby's needs, and enough calories. I don't weigh myself between appointments and exercise every day. Before I eat something I ask myself if it will nourish my baby or if I would feed it to my child, and if the answer is no then I usually skip it. Basically just do what you can to know that your body is just gaining what it needs. Then don't even mind that pesky scale, we all need to gain different amounts.

  • A lot of that weight is baby, extra blood in your veins, amniotic fluid, extra boob mass, extra uterus mass, water retention... gaining 30 lb while pregnant is not the same as gaining 30 lb normally. A lot of that weight will disappear the first few weeks after birth just as your body goes back to normal (uterus shrinks, bloodflow returns to normal, you stop retaining water, etc). But not all of it will obviously.

Try not to stress about it too much. You need to gain weight because you are growing an adorable little parasite.
This exactly. It sounds like you're gaining a very reasonable amount of weight. I understand the anxiety the scale can cause, but for the good of you and your baby just focus on being healthy.

Dude, totes not cool. Just like everyone gains weight differently, everyone loses differently. I was eating healthier than ever before and more active than ever before, but EBFing - it took me over a year to get back to my PP weight.

Don't tell people that if they exercise and eat well the weight will come off in 8 weeks. It took 9 months to put the weight on, and 9+ months to get all the baby weight off is pretty normal. It is unrealistic to tell a new mom she'll be back to her PP weight in 8 weeks, especially being most doctors won't even clear you for exercise for 6-8w.

I never said everyone would be back to pre pregnancy weight in 8 weeks. I said I did. I also said not to stress to lose weight as everyone is different.
I suppose I should have said with exercise (not going to the gym but going on walks) and eating healthy made the the weight came off quickly for me. I also gained 60 pounds so a lot was water weight.
  • Don't get too hung up on the number.  I know its difficult because I'm in the same boat (was down 23 lbs and then got PG).  I asked my MW a similar question and she said to just focus on eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water.  Get your baby here healthy and worry about the scale later :)

  • Eat healthy, keep up on the fluids, and try and stay active. Otherwise don't worry too much about numbers. Your dr will say something if there is an issue. I have a small build and have put on about 40lbs and this is my first pregnancy. I have a gf who has the same build and just had #3. She puts on 100lbs per baby, but loses it fairly quick. Everyone is different. Try not to stress.
  • Put the scale away!!!

  • My midwife has only had me weigh in twice during my pregnancy, and I'm 32 weeks. It is my fourth baby, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I don't think they're as worried as they used to be. It is a stage of life, and I know my weight will come off eventually. Just keep eating healthy and drinking lots of water. That's all you can do right about now!
  • I wouldn't worry unless your doctor say something is wrong.  Don't forget there are 2 ends to the spectrum.  I'm on the other end of not gaining any and trust me I am in no way proud of that.  My doctor hasn't said there's a problem.  I am measuring on track and to not worry so I haven't. You are growing a baby.  And like many PP have said pregnancy weight is much different than regular weight gain.  There are many other factors that lead into that weight. Keep doing what you're doing and most important again don't WORRY sounds like your doing a great job!!!

And my tests anx blood pressure are amazing... ask your doctor if they aren't worried I wouldn't be! We all freak out over the weight especially about losing it.. iys normal yo bd concerened n freak out a little.. i have mental break downs randomly all the time lol ypu should see my flinstones feet! but the little booger inside makes it all worth it! And like my bf always tells me your growing a child inside you nobody looks at you as being fat or gaining weight they look at it as your pregnant and it's a beautiful thing :)

  • If you put on 10 pounds in 2 weeks, it is pretty likely that some of that is retained fluid. At my appointment a month ago, I had gained 10 pounds and then at my last appointment I was down 7. Net gain of 3. Unless your OB tells you that your weight gain is a problem, I'd keep eating 3 healthy meals and some appropriate snacks and exercise in moderation. You don't want to put your health or baby's health in jeopardy needlessly.

  • I was 162 when I found out I was pregnant with my third. I'm 26 weeks now and at 189lbs. I never ever feel full and am constantly eating. I really feel like crap when I see a thin pregnant lady with a big bump. Of course they are ten years younger and pregnant with their first. My doctor told me from the start that I should only gain about 15-25 lbs but not to worry because even she gained more that what was expected.
  • With my first i gained about 20 and had a hard time losing it. With this Ty pregnancy i have gained seven. Im measuring just right and baby is great. Im happy i didnt gain a lot but i think i might be a little more comfortable if i had gained a little more.
  • I gained 40 the first time and will likely gain about that same amount again. However, I was about 20 lbs heavier this time (It's been 10 yrs. lol) so sometimes I see the number and think.... ugh most I've ever weighed, but then I shrug it off. As long as your aren't eating a bunch of junk then your weight gain is baby related and has a purpose.

You may lose much of it quickly afterwards or it may take awhile, but either way it is worth it in the end. If it truly causes anxiety, tell your doc and ask them to not let you know your weight. :)
  • I've gained about the same from a similar starting point.  I'm really uncomfortable, but this is about what I gained with DD1.  I'm not worried about it this time around, but I know I would be a lot more comfortable if I were 10 lbs lighter.  I just keep thinking.... only 10 weeks left.  Not too shabby!
