Preeclampsia - Anyone else?

We went in for our regular 28 week appointment yesterday, had a great ultrasound and then went up to see our doc. When she came in, she said the protein levels in my urine were trace amounts last month and a 4 this month. This is coupled with the fact that I've had moderately high blood pressure the whole pregnancy. She sent us directly next door to the hospital to be admitted for further tests to confirm preeclampsia. We will get all test results and a final decision tomorrow on whether we deliver now or try to buy more time. The maternal fetal specialist we met with today says she is optimistic we can try to buy some time as long as my BP is kept under control and I don't develop any symptoms of severe preeclampsia, but that I will be tested daily and preeclampsia can change suddenly. Our goal at this point is to try to make it to 32 weeks (December 27) and schedule delivery for then. Anyone have any experience with preeclampsia or a baby born at almost 29 weeks? We meet with all the docs tomorrow afternoon for the final plan.

Re: Preeclampsia - Anyone else?

  • No experience. Our board just had twins born at 29 weeks. Both are healthy and doing well. I hope you get good news and that you make it the 27th or longer.

  • Best of luck friend! I have no experience with this at all, but we'll all be rooting for you guys to make it a little longer!
  • So sorry to hear this... Stay strong mama and baby!!! Praying you can keep them cooking a bit longer! Xoxo
  • With my first I delivered at 34 weeks with severe preeclampsia. It is scary. The only treatment is getting placenta delivered. I was put on mag sulfate. This makes you feel like you have been hit by a Mac truck. What it does is relaxes all the smooth muscles, which in turn lowers your seizure threshold. With high blood pressure you are more at risk for seizures. I'm hoping since they are thinking early delivery that they gave you steroid shots to mature baby's lungs. Everyday baby is inside is good. 29 weeks is good if you need to deliver early. I am an l&d nurse who also helps in the nicu and I will be breathing a sigh of relief once I hit 30 weeks. Babies do typically really well after 30. Some assistance with breathing is normal but overall do well. Good luck to you and let me know if you have any questions.
  • I had a scare in October, elevated levels in my 24 hour collection but it's been under control since then. Although at my 28 week appt, my BP was elevated again so I'm hoping at my 30 week appt today it won't be. With twins, there's already enough diagnoses going on with me, I couldn't handle another... Best of luck to you and your baby. Whether you deliver soon or later, the stats show that your baby will be fine.

  • Glad they identified this early enough ! T&Ps for a safe delivery!
  • I got diagnosed with Gestational Hypertension a few weeks ago. And my protein levels were elevated after a 24hr urine test. They put me on bedrest and I had to check my blood pressure like all the time at home, keep an eye on how often LO moves & basically cut out all salt from my diet in the meantime. Also my appointments have basically been upped to every other week with my OB. If my bp is up, stolic (top #) is in the 140+ or the diastolic is in the 100's and doesn't change after laying on my left side for 20-30 minutes, Or I see lights flickering in the corner of my eyes, and/or have a headache that doesn't go away after pain meds I have to call the OB. We've already been to L&D to have bp monitored 2x's since the initial diagnosis bc it wouldn't go down at home. It's not fun but anything to keep this LO growing and avoid another NICU stay.
  • This is scary, but hope you can safely keep the little one cooking a few more weeks!

  • I am being watched very closely this pregnancy as I had pre-e last pregnancy. I have been going to the doctors weekly for five weeks now and next week I start twice a week. My blood pressure has been elevated for about a month and a half now, usually running 170/90. Just finished my 24 hour urine, will be doing one a week along with weekly bloodwork. Hoping all of your tests come back okay.
  • I am currently in the hospital with a shortened cervix. I came here in the first place b/c I was really sick not keeping food down and my blood pressure is not controlled and very high unless I am laying down. There was not really any protein in my urine at all yet with the 24 hour catch and my blood work looks good for now. I have gotten a lot of info about the NICU since being here and they said 29 weekers do really well. Best of luck and t&ps!

I had pre-e with my first, but not until 37 weeks. Lots of 24 hour urine collections and non-stress tests in the hospital. Best of luck to you! Im so glad they caught this before it got really bad.

Be on the look out for spotty and blurred vision, and bad headaches, and swelling of your face or whole body. Glad they are keeping a good eye on you, take care of yourself!

ETA: I ended up being induced at 38w6d after lots of monitoring. Good luck to you and your LO :)

  • I have no personal experience, but a girl on my D12 board was on hospital bed rest for a large chunk of her pregnancy because of pre-e. She ended up carrying her son to full term. Good luck, please keep us updated!

  • No advice, but good luck! Let's hope they can keep little one in there a little longer. My friend just had her baby boy at 30 weeks because of severe Pre-e and he is not home and healthy after a one and a half month stay in the NICU.

  • I'm going through this now so I sympathize.  My blood pressure has been on the higher side and my 2nd 24 hour urine collection came back elevated so my doctor is having me go to the hospital this weekend to run more tests.  Got my fingers crossed that everything comes back normal or else I will be admitted (not sure why??).  I hate to say this but it's really annoying and inconvenient especially since the ultrasound, non-stress test, etc was all good at the doctor's office yesterday.  I really hope everything is ok so I can go about my day.  Selfish maybe but I just don't want to over worry & cause unnecessary stress.

  • I also had a 4 in my urine and high blood pressure. they took 10000 vials of blood and have decided my organs are still working fine and to leave baby in but monitor me better incase it gets worse. I am 31 weeks. Hopefully you will get the same news I did, I know how stressful it is and I hope baby can cook for longer!
  • No experience here either, but wishing you the best of luck! Hopefully everything will be fine.

  • No experience and no advice just hugs and thoughts and prayers.
  • I am higher risk for pre-e due to blood work done at 16W. So far no symptoms, my blood pressure has been normal and babys weight is on track. I remember being terrified at the beginning hearing this, but I wish you the best of luck.
  • No experience, but Ts&Ps for you. Best of luck! Please keep us updated.

  • I hope you were able to get a good final plan hammered out and that things look hopeful after the meeting with your dr.

  • I'm in kind of the same boat that you are. Due to my blood pressure being a little high all three times it was taken at my appointment today, the swelling in my ankles/feet, dizziness, and blurred vision, my doctor is being cautious. I go tomorrow for my GD test and they are also doing more blood work to rule out pre-eclampsia. I also have to have a 24hr urine test and I go back to my doctor next week to have my blood pressure checked again.

I'll keep you in my thoughts that all works out and you can get a plan figured out.

  • Hey!  I started showing later signs of Pre-E with my first- more around 35 weeks, but wanted to let you know I went four more weeks to 39 weeks and had a very healthy 9 lb baby.  I was monitored twice a week at the hospital and had to do some annoying 24 hr urine catches.  My main symptoms were crazy swelling and high bp.  I guess it would have been different if I'd had high levels of protein or vision changes, etc, but my doctors were great about letting me ride it out for a while.  I also realize now that in my attempts to relax and lower my blood pressure I was actually tensing up and making it worse.  I am doing much better in my second pregnancy by just chatting quietly with the nurses or my daughter while it's taken.  I know it's hard, but try to just be positive every time they take it because if you are worried it's going to show.

    Good luck!
