what week is better to wait to be induced if you are post due date?

Hi all! This might be a really dumb question and I do trust my team of doctors who have suggested getting induced around 41 weeks if I don't go into labor before then. I am just curious about other opinions, especially those who have been induced before or who have a planned induction coming up. Right now I'm 39+1 weeks with no complications. I had an appointment yesterday with one of my doctors who has preemptively scheduled a series of tests for me on my due date (next Tues) to see how LO is doing and how he might respond to an induction. If I go into labor before then, obviously I never get the tests. My question is this...would you recommend going for an induction at exactly 41 weeks, 41.5 weeks, or 42 weeks (or does it not matter, in your opinion)? I know there are some known complications with waiting too long so I wouldn't go past 42 weeks. I'm just curious about what you all think. Thanks!

  • Lurker here, but I was really nervous at the thought of going past 41 weeks.

  • I agree to go with what your doc recommends, after those tests.  My practice has already advised that, for me, they'll start pushing induction at 40.5 weeks.  So basically I'll hit 40 weeks on Dec. 10th and if I haven't had the baby by the 13th, they'll want to induce.  I'll probably take their recommendation, if it gets to that point.  Of course, their recommendation won't be final until they do an NST and all that jazz...all they've done so far is lay out what they think they'll recommend, if they need to, based on my pregnancy.

  • I second that your doctor knows best what is best for you. My midwives are comfortable going to 42 weeks without interventions/tests with me, but I have had a very straightforward pregnancy with no issues. I'm sure if I started having an elevated BP, or protein in my urine this would change.

  • For me, I'd say between 41-42 weeks.

Last time my OB didn't mention inducing until I hit my due date.  She didn't want me going much past 41 weeks.  I had an appt on Thursday, right at 40 weeks, and she wanted to see me the following Tuesday to see how things were progressing. We would have scheduled the induction at that time. I was still feeling good so I probably would have tried to push it back a few days (assuming baby was still doing well).  I ended up going into labor on my own and DD1 was born that weekend at 40+2.

  • FTM, my due date was yesterday.  Eviction is scheduled for Wednesday the 10th at 41w1d.  I have a growth scan and NST scheduled for Friday.  Those results may change my induction date.  My BP was slightly elevated at my appointment yesterday and my doctor isn't comfortable waiting longer than Wednesday.

  • Here, they don't let you go past 10 days. If I were in your position, I'd go with 41.

  • All depends on your dr and pregnancy. My dr will let me go to 42 weeks (I am trying for natural birth and she's a big supporter of this). Hopefully you don't have to worry and LO comes on their own soon. Best wishes!
  • Last time around without complications my doctors didn't want me going past 41 weeks. Never became an issue bc DS was born the day before his due date.
  • For myself, I would say between 41w and 42w as long as fluid levels are still good. I was induced with DD at 41w2d because her fluid was starting to get low.  I had my own contractions for about 24 hours before my induction so I was already 4.5cm when I went to get the pitocin. I had a very good experience and easy labor as far as inductions with an epi go.

With this baby I am thinking I want to consider induction after 9 days overdue, but not before that unless I medically need to again.

  • I saw the doctor yesterday and she said that they would let me go to 42 weeks.  She said that unless it was medically necessary, they don't even consider it until 10 days overdue. My fingers are crossed that this little one comes on her own well before that!  I think it just depends on your doctor.

Thanks ladies!! I will rely more on the test results than anything else but your experiences are both reassuring and helpful!

  • If baby isn't here by my due date, they do the NST and an ultrasound and all the fun tests but they will schedule an induction at 41w.

  • If there are no issues I'm fine talking about an induction at 41w and schduling it for 41.5+w.

  • With DS#1 I was induced at exactly 41w. My doctor did a scan to check fluid levels and because they were good he scheduled me for 41w. He indicated at the time that there were new studies (this was 2 years ago) to suggest that after 41w the quality of the placenta actually starts to deteriorate and that it doesn't benefit the baby to be in there any longer. I had a completely uneventful pregnancy so we were comfortable with waiting one week to induce.

  • I had to be induced with my first daughter due to her being late. Here ( BC Canada) doctors are not allowed to induce without a medical reason until 10 days after due date. Since there are complications with going too long after due date I would have felt more comfortable being induced right at 41 weeks but I wasn't given the option.
If you have the option Id suggest getting lots of info from your doctors so you can both come to a decision you're comfortable with.
  • 41 weeks is still within normal for a a pregnancy. I wouldn't induce until 42 w.
