Cervix length

Hi, ladies. I had my anatomy ultrasound today, and my cervix length seems a bit in the short side, 2.53 cm. Everything I read says under 2.5cm is a problem, and even at 2.5cm some ladies were given treatments or more frequent checks. I am calling the doctor in the morning. Anyone have experience with this? My due date is may 3, so I am 18 weeks and some change. Oh and my baby is a beautiful, amazing little GIRL!!!!!!!!! We were going to wait to find out the sex, but we couldn't help ourselves! So excited! Thank you, ladies. Hope you all are having a wonderful night. I feel so, so happy to know I have a daughter!

Re: Cervix length

  • Congrats on a healthy baby girl! I don't know my cervix length yet, however I am being sent in for an u/s specifically to check my cervix in 2 weeks because a history of a uterine septum which could cause IC. The only thing I really know is that they can monitor your cervix every few weeks and put in a clerage if necessary.

  • Last time I went to my doctor she told me my cervix was long, I have to go for my next appointment tomorrow. I will see what she says about shorter cervixes.
  • Bump. Anyone experienced this? Waiting for dr. to call me back.
  • I am getting cervix checks every two weeks right now. My MFM told me that if it got to 2.5 they would put in a cerclage. I would definitely think that a 2.53 would qualify for a cerclage

Thanks for the response, @mylittleladies1229‌ . The doctor never called me back. So hopefully they call tomorrow. A cercilage sounds painful eeek, but having this baby early is way worse. I so wish I would have known about cervix length during my scan so I could have requested a transvaginal scan when I saw the measurement was low. I read that is a more accurate way to measure. Live and learn. Any ladies reading this ask your cervix length during your anatomy scan.

How are your cervix checks being done? Transabdominal u/s, transvaginal u/s or just manually? How are manual checks done if that's what you're getting? Like does the dr. use a finger to measure or some sort of device? Does it hurt? FTM here, so lost, thanks.

  • I'm surprised the tech didn't just go ahead and give you the transvaginal ultrasound when she saw the number was low. I am getting both transvaginal and transabdominal scan at every appointment.

The tech didn't seem to be very experienced. She was young and said she doesn't do many ob ultrasounds because they are hard. She was nice, but I didn't feel like I was in the best hands. Luckily my baby seems just fine so far. Kicking like crazy and moving all over. I found this website that has good information. https://www.keepemcookin.com/prevention.aspx
  • I was on hospital bedrest for two months and used that website as a resource all the time. They have a message board to talk with other women going through the same issues. Anyways I hope your doctor calls you back quickly this morning! I would push for a repeat scan ASAP.
  • I had my cervical length monitored closely up to 20w with my 1st pregnancy and it was always by transvag US. My measurement was never low so I'm not sure what your dr will do. Probably keep a close eye, maybe order a transvag US to get a better measurement.

  • Are you having any cramping or any other symptoms?

My dr checks my cervix every 3 weeks by transvaginal US.

I would push for another US and push for a third one next week to ensure it isn't shortening even more. I would also ask what tests they will run to determine why it might be shortening.

I lost my baby at 22 weeks due to an asymptomatic infection. My cervix shortened and I went into preterm labour. I don't want to scare you as your situation is probably different than mine. But make sure your dr is listening to you and you are getting the answers and care you and your baby need.
Remember the Dr essentially works for you.

Good luck and fingers crossed it was just a poor ultrasound.

What kind of test are there to determine why it is shortening?

I would ask for them to be testing for signs of infections. Usually something will appear in a blood screen. In my situation had they found out earlier what was causing the shortening and treated my infection I may not have lost my baby.

No other symptoms really. I have some pressure in my lower abdomen, but I just figured that's normal for being pregnant?  I don't have any symptoms of infection, but I will ask the doctor about possible infections. What infection did you have?
    <p>

I will ask for a transvaginal u\s because that seems to be the standard for measuring. I am just wondering how common it is to have a naturally short cervix? Hopefully mine is just short, and it hasn't been shortening. I guess there's no way to know this though as I never had it measured before.
  • UPDATE: the nurse practitioner called and did not seem worried at all. She didn't want to recheck me for another month, but I pushed and they are rechecking me in 2 weeks. She said the cervix length finding on the ultrasound wasn't even flagged for being abnormal, the measurement was just listed. I think they are a bit too relaxed about all this seeing as they have no way of knowing my baseline length, but they are rechecking in 2 weeks so I'm happy.

The other issue is that the baby has a choroid plexus (sp?) cyst. I'm not really worried since my first trimester screen was all clear, and the baby looks good otherwise, but they will send me for another ultrasound for that in about a month. I'm glad that will be another opportunity to see the cervix length, which is much more concerning to me.

    Thanks for your input everyone!

  • My sisters at one point got down to 7mm. She was put on modified bed rest for a week or two and put on vaginal progesterone suppositories
  • I'm having a transvaginal u/s every 2 weeks along with an abdominal u/s.

  • I have a compromised cervix due to two LEEP procedures and a cold knife come biopsy. Because of this my dr was monitoring my cervix every 4 weeks with a transvaginal ultrasound. Now that I'm 17 weeks they want to do it every two weeks. My dr said anything over 5 is normal. I would definitely contact your doctor as soon as you can.
  • @ck4567‌ I'm glad they got back to you and you are happy with the compromise of having an ultrasound in 2 weeks. Like you said they don't have a baseline of what your cervix was prior to this appointment so I wonder how they determined that it isn't an issue? Are you going to take it easy until the appointment?

I assume (she did not say this to me), that because the report said my cervix is closed that she thinks I just have a naturally short cervix. I am glad the report doesn't note any funneling which would suggest shortening. I didn't have the report in front of me when I noted the length, I just had the image with the length calculated. She also really stressed it wasn't abnormal, but then I said that if 2.5 is the absolute cutoff for normal, I do not feel good being right there at 2.5, ya know?! She acknowledged what I was saying and we set the earlier appt., but if I hadn't noted the length myself from the image and called in I bet they would not have even mentioned it to me at all. I think that's crazy, but I'm not a dr, and I'm an admittedly overly cautious FTM. And, I always just take it easy, so I'll continue doing so. However, what is interesting is the night before the ultrasound I was VERY upset, like full blown hysterically crying to my husband, wake up with swollen eyes upset. I had this huge, awful fight with my father, and I did feel uterus tightening when I was upset, so I'm wondering if that could have done anything to my cervix length? Needless to say I'm staying away from him. I can't let myself get worked up anymore.
  • I'm sorry about your fight with your dad. It's so hard to know what's going on with your body as a FTM. I had what I thought were Braxton hicks starting at 18 weeks with my twins. Well turns out I was really in preterm labor which caused my cervix to shorten. But, it's impossible to know what's going on in there all the time, especially when it's your first time. I learned to trust my gut when I feel like something isn't right.

Exactly. And my gut says to keep an eye on this. And that's supppppper scary, preterm labor at 18 weeks, yikes. I hope it ended up okay and I am assuming it did from your sn?
  • Thanks my girls were born at 30 weeks and they were healthy despite only weighing 3.2 lbs each. The spent 5 & 6 weeks in the NICU but are typical little 2 years olds now :)
  • Thank goodness! Preterm labor is no joke!
