I'm a FTM who just learned that lactation cookies are a thing lol. Do they really help increase your milk supply? Can they be frozen as dough to be baked later? Anyone want to share a good recipe? :-)
They are totally a (very yummy!) thing! I used them while nursing both of my boys whenever my supply would drop (usually due to my period returning), and they helped. I'd have to look for the recipe I used, but I know it contained oatmeal, brewer's yeast, and flaxseed oil--all of which boost supply. Fenugreek (in tea or tablet form) is also a great way to boost supply.
All that being said, be careful about using anything to boost supply within the first month or two. That is the time during which your body and your LO are syncing how much milk is needed. A constant oversupply can lead to clogged ducts and mastitis.
They are a thing, but I took fenugreek and ate oatmeal and flax last time and still had supply issues. So I wouldn't say they're a miracle cure, but hey, it's cookies!
Yep, I tried them too, along with Mother's Milk Tea and Fenugreek. I definitely with the advice not to start anything too soon. Your body needs time to get adapted to baby's schedule. It is all supply and demand.
With that being said, the "natural" types of things I tried listed above didn't do much for me. The way my son's pediatrician (who doubles as my lactation consultant) put it, if you only need an extra ounce in a day, those things might work for you. If you need more like 4oz more in a day, you need to try something stronger. I wouldn't look into this yet, because you may never need it. But if you get to that point, do some research on domperidone. It is the one thing that is bascially guaranteed to work. I wouldn't even consider it until probably after 3 or 4 months or so. I didn't NEED it until around 5-6 months with my son. Anyway, if supply ever does become a real issue for it, do your research on that and you can decide how to proceed from there.
I've heard they can increase supply. I used to make them when I nursed. I never saw a difference, but they tasted good, and I had an excuse to eat them all "its all for the baby."
I just googled recipes. Can't really go wrong. Just make sure you use brewer's yeast, and NOT nutritional yeast. Despite people saying they are the same thing, they ARE NOT and your cookies will taste like shit! Brewers yeast can be a little hard to find.
Yes, you can freeze the dough. I plan on doing it later this month!
I never saw an increase in my supply from them, but it can't hurt! There are quite a few different recipes out there and they are actually pretty good.
I did notice an increase from drinking mothers milk tea. However that isn't tasty, it's pretty gross actually. (Unless you like black licorice) but it helped.

Edit to add: The first recipe on this link looks like (or very similar to) the one that I used.....
