Does anyone here have a will? (Or is anyone here a lawyer?) It's on our list to do before the baby. How did you go about doing it? How much did it cost? We don't have a ton of money or stuff so it should be pretty straightforward and easy as far as wills go. Should we wait until after the baby is born since it will be primarily for her?
Re: Wills
I think it cost like $50 or something for a bundle of forms. when im done, i think they just need to be notarized.
We are getting ours done this month, and from what I understand you can include unborn and even future children in your will. The major point of discussion for us has been guardianship of our baby and his potential siblings. Dh's parents aren't able and mine are in their mid sixties, so the question becomes for us, do we make it my parents, running the risk that we could be burdening them with raising a child or children into their 80's, or do we move on to siblings? Only one sibling is married with kids of his own though
It's a lot to think about but I'm a "set it and forget it" kinda girl so we're just gonna get it nailed down.
Oh, we have a business attorney so we're probably going to spend several thousand on ours but that's because there is a multi sibling multi asset company to account for. Most young couples can get something from "legal zoom" or similar and get theirs done for under $100.
Don't forget to also include a living will element. (Your wants for what would happen if you are alive but incapacitated, etc) Nasty business but part of being a grown up.

We've had a similar discussion regarding the idea of our aging parents as potential guardians. Ours are in their early 60s. We decided to go with siblings, not because of the potential burden on aging parents but actually instead because of the potential burden on our LO: with older guardians there is a good chance that our LO would lose them, too (either to death or incapacitation due to illness). That would mean they would then be possibly shifted to another guardian. Which we decided would be too traumatic seeing that the risk could be avoided by granting guardianship to one of our siblings. We're including visitation language regarding the grandparents in the guardianship language (and we plan to discuss it and have it all approved by our sibling).
I'm curious if you've come up with other ideas I haven't regarding this as it sounds like we're in a similar situations (regarding family make up).
I'm also following this post, as we haven't completed a will yet and cost effective would be great! Thanks @Ducktale for the topic!

However, maybe there's a compromise? Some of the estate could be handled by another person as trustee while the finances necessary to raise your child could be left under the guardians of your LO.
How thorough were your options, though? I feel like a lawyer would be helpful in even knowing what was important to include or what options other people have tried.
ETA: I should say we have not done this yet, but it is on our to do list!
F15 December Siggy Challenge:
17 months TTC and 1miscarriage, 1 chemical pregnancy, rainbow baby born 2/16/15
TTC 2.0
16 months TTC, 2 chemical pregnancies, EDD 6/3/17
We are going to have to make some decisions fast!
Our estate is going to be general with regards to #of kids and what we have- this could all change a lot in the coming years (it will be divided in % amongst all children we have as a couple)
As far as life insurance- 20 yr term should be ok bc our 401ks should be higher at the end and our mortgage should be low or paid off by then as well. I think you need full names and ssn to have beneficiaries on this so we will wait to update.
