10 month old sudden issue

please explain DD to me. She is 10 month and I nurse 3 times a day + 1 overnight + 2 pumps at work. I pumped too close to home yesterday and she started crying when I tried to nurse her at home at 6 (as I do every day). She also bit me and I yelled which led to more crying. I tried to give her BM in a bottle but she only ate 1.5 oz. she ate good dinner of solids with us and was happy in a bath. When I tried to nurse at bedtime at 8 (she ways falls asleep on boob) she got hysterical and wouldn't. Gave her a paci and rocked her and she was out in 2 minutes. Tried to take out paci and dream feed = screaming. She just woke up at 4 am and when I tried to nurse her from my full overachiever side she tried for a second but screamed again. But did nurse from the underachiever side and had a letdown and everything. What the hell? We never had any screaming like that. My right boob is very full and pump is at work. Should I try again in tr morning from the right side?

  • Sorry you're having a rough day! I would try not to stress about it right now. I would bring your pump home just incase it happens again when you get home. It might be the beginning of a nursing strike, or just a weird day :)

LO went on a two day "strike" a few weeks ago. I never offered a bottle, but kept offering breast every 30/45 minutes. He would take a few sips and then get pissy. I tried to keep our sessions stress free on my part and he worked it out on his own.

If you look up nursing strike on kellymom.com they have some good stuff to read.

    Good luck!

  • Could be a number of things. First, I probably wouldn't worry about being out of milk just because you pumped late yesterday. Unless you literally took the pump off after 20 minutes of pumping and latched baby, there should have been a quick enough letdown to satisfy baby.

Some babies will temporarily strike after they've been startled after biting mom and gentle reassurance and continued offering can help with that.

Possible other reasons for a nursing strike are: teething, ear infection, being overly tired or distracted. Keep offering, consider offering a cool teether before nursing, monitor for other signs of ear infection (ear or eye drainage, fever, lethargy, ear pulling) and take her to pediatrician if anything seems off. Monitor wet diapers, offer cold water in a sippy to help hydrate. Bring that pump home and pump when she refuses to maintain supply.

    Hang in there!

  • Thanks guys. I did read about nursing strike as I had it with my son after he had HFM when he was 1. I actually totally forgot about that until now. It's just so weird because she screamed at the full breast but nursed off the less empty one in the middle of the night. She didn't nurse in the morning :( Was more interested in playing. I got to work early and pumped. I'll try again after work and I guess bring the pump home today. Baby girl better figure it out because I nursed both her brothers till they were 2+ and plan to nurse her forever :)
