Do you lay only on your left side? Or both?

I'm pregnant with my third baby and with baby 1 & 2 I was very adamant about only sleeping on my left side because I read in one of my books that baby gets better blood flow from the mother. Well with this being my third, I've been less worried about sleeping on my left and have been sleeping on my right. Needless to say I'm much more laid back about "the rules" with this pregnancy. Idk but I am.

What are your thoughts on this??

Re: Do you lay only on your left side? Or both?

  • I lay however makes me feel more comfortable. I don't stress too much about staying on my left.

  • See I use to stress so much over but not now. I still tummy sleep also.
  • I'm a FTM and only 15 weeks pregnant and not showing too much yet. I'm only comfortable sleeping on my right side or on my back which I don't think we're suppose to do either. When I lay on my left side I'm uncomfortable and feel pressure. I think the baby is more on my left so that may be why. I'm not sure! I need to talk to the doctor about it.

I am a back sleeper naturally and if I sleep on my side I prefer my right. I have been trying to get into the habit of left side sleeping but I alternate a lot between back, left and right side. My Doc said at my 16 week appt not to worry about this until like week 26. And to just put a pillow under your hips on your right side if you are a back sleeper so you are just not completely flat.

  • I've always been a belly/side sleeper.   I have to switch sides periodically throughout the night or else my shoulders start to hurt.

I occasionally still wake up on my stomach but it isn't comfortable.

  • I used to sleep on my left side mostly before I became pregnant. Now, for some reason, I prefer lying on my back or right side.
  • Always start on my left, then move to the right if uncomfortable.
  • I sleep on my back or sides still. Ill sleepon either side later. But I naturally prefer the left anyway

  • I lay on my right side, left side and my back.   The idea that you could somehow force yourself to only sleep on your left side is a little crazy to me.

  • I naturally prefer sleeping on my left side.
  • I sleep however is comfortable for me. I favored my left side before pregnancy and continue to do so but I wake up in different positions throughout the night. I move around a lot.

This is me exactly.  I figure it's more important to be comfortable and get good sleep than worry about which side I'm on. I switch back and forth all night anyway so it really doesn't matter where I start.

  • I switch sides but mostly sleep on my right. I roll to my back throughout the night but my body has started waking me up because it is getting uncomfortable.

  • I fall asleep on my right side. Throughout the night I will switch to left or even my back. I move around a lot. My poor DH. I wake up sometimes and notice I have pushed him to the edge the bed. I also sleep with at least 4 pillows.

  • I have a permanent left shoulder issue. So there is no way I could sleep on my left side all night.  I switch between sides.

same for me, I sleep however is comfy, which is mostly back right now, but I can't sleep on my left side for long at all.

  • I sleep on both sides. I wake up all throughout the night anyway so I just move to the side that is most comfy. Occasionally I wake up on my back but that is rare and I just will flip over. Your body will definitely let you know if you need to move.

I sleep on my right side but kind of tilted so I lay on my tummy as well. This is do to the side of the bed I sleep on, so I face the outside of the bed and not DH. I sleep with my back to his chest and it's just more comfortable.

Same with me! This is my default position. I keep rolling onto my back and waking myself up though, even with a pillow behind me. I also sleep sort of on my stomach but with one leg up so there's less pressure on it. I just move a lot when I sleep.
  • I sleep mostly on my right side to fall asleep and often wake up on my back or slightly tilted to one side or the other. DH is on my left so if I'm on that side all curled up I usually end up hitting him with my knees, he doesn't care but it drives me nuts if I don't have all the space ;)

  • I've been sleeping where I'm comfortable however the past couple nights everytime I lay on my right side it makes me have to pee!!
  • I naturally start out on my left side but move around a lot at night. Recently I've been most comfortable half on my side almost leaning back onto my pregnancy pillow.

  • This is the first time I've heard that you're supposed to sleep on your left side. Is this really a thing? I usually go back and forth between left and right, before and durning pregnancy.

  • I'm a side sleeper with occasional stomach tendencies. I've been trying to avoid stomach sleeping the last few weeks. My OB also said to sleep however is comfortable and your body will tell you when it's time to change positions. I guess I'm on my left more, but have no qualms about flipping to my right. I feel like I'll get bed sores if I stay in the same position all night long, lol.

I also tell myself that women the world over, throughout history, have been having tons of babies sleeping on mats, floors, and mattresses in every position imaginable. I think I'll be ok for a few hours a night on my right.

  • I've found at nineteen weeks that even without consciously thinking about "rules," my body naturally gets into the best position.  Sleeping on my back now hurts my lower back and hips.  Sleeping on my right side, while comfortable on my hips, exacerbates heartburn.  Sleeping on my left side is (for now) completely comfortable, and when I roll in my sleep to an uncomfortable position, the discomfort wakes me up and I can roll back.  Knowing that my body follows the rules on its own has caused me to not be anxious about sleep at all, which is nice.
