Orajel / Tylenol Use for Teething

It seems my LO is teething, and though I'm sure there are countless teething threads in our group, I did a search and couldn't find any. So here's my question: who among you uses / used Orajel for teething? I read that the FDA has issued two warnings against its use for children under two because an ingredient in it can lead to hospitalization or even death (rarely, but it happens). I think there's been around 19 deaths linked to it. Crazy.

So how about Tylenol? Do you use this when they're in extreme discomfort? I want to use it because it gives her such relief, but I wonder how often is too often since they have a lot of teeth to break.

Calling my pediatrician about this this morning as well, but wanted to see what you girls thought as well. Thanks for your input!

I just use Tylenol to keep them comfortable (so only when I notice they are extremely fussy and cannot rest) and then frozen teethers.

    Edit for clarity.

  • Not to sound to "crunchy" and holistic here, but you may want to try cell salts (most of us mommy's use them all the time and don't know it...they are the primary ingredient in most gas drops).  I have been seeing a Shaman since I gave birth for some strange maladies that I have been dealing with since pregnancy and she is treating me with cell salts, they are completely safe for children so I know I will be trying them for teething before anything else...here's what I could find.

Cell Salts to Help with Teething

To make a cell salt solution, put up to 10 tablets of each cell salt in a 16- to 24-ounce bottle; fill with water and swirl to dissolve tablets. Sip throughout the day.

#1 Calc Fluor 6X – to support teeth enamel
#2 Calc Phos 6X – slow dentition (teething) or delayed, with emaciation
#4 Ferr phos 6X – inflammation and low fevers
#12 Silicea 6X – infection, delayed teething, sensitivity to cold water

FWIW - I won't be letting LO "sip out of the same bottle all day" I'll just split up the salts into different bottles.

  • We have some teething toys that we will put in the fridge for her to chew on.

  • Just tried Orajel Natural last night, a very tiny amount.  Seemed to help for awhile.

I've been told Vanilla helps, not imatation but actual vanilla extract rubbed on the gums.

  • The problem is our babies are still so young.  A lot of things I use for older teethers I'm less comfortable with before 6 months.  Tylenol, clove oil, ice cubes in mesh feeders, breastmilk popsicles.  All things I do later on.  I do put lavender oil on her jaw line.  I've heard it can go on the gums too.  I've heard white fir oil can help too.  I do use an amber necklace.

I don't like the gels.  I don't like the teething tabs either...they never worked for my older kids.

  • Teething hasn't started yet here -- DD was a late teether. I wonder if DS will follow suit?

I avoid orajel entirely. With DD I mostly offered frozen teethers and  chilled washcloths. If teething was affecting nighttime sleep I would first try a foot rub and if that failed then try Tylenol.
  • My dentist said not to use oragel because it hardens the guns and makes teething worse for babies. He recommended a pea size amount f Tylenol rubbed on her gums and use teething tablets.
  • Baby girl already has a tooth thats popped through. We have used tylenol very sparingly... maybe 3 times, only at night when all else fails. She really likes her sofie giraffe for day time. Thinking about making mommy pops for this next round.

Not being snarky at all, but how does rubbing the feet help? Does it distract baby to focus on another part of the body? Do you have to rub a certain part of the foot? I've heard other moms say they do this but I've never asked why.
  • I have an amber necklace that worked great for DD.  She has her top molars left, then will be giving little brother her necklace.  On the really bad days I gave Tylenol.

  • @Eena1242‌, distraction is exactly it. DH mentioned something about pressure points in the heel too, but I don't know about that. I do know that lightly rubbing their feet will sometimes take just enough focus away from sore gums to allow them to drift off to sleep.
