Sippy cups

Have you guys started using them yet?

I tried for the first time last night, with his mashed banana.  I would not recommend trying a new sippy cup when there is food in front of the baby.  Normally he will take a little bit of the bottle for every 3-4 bites to wash some food down, but not so much with the cup.  He screamed every time I put it near his face, until I gave him more banana.  Once the food was done, he was willing to give the sippy cup a go, but didn't have much luck getting anything out.

I'm sure it will just take practice, right?  In the meantime... it must not do anything to screw up his latch/ability to take the bottle?  We're past worrying about that, right?

  • I've been meaning to get one.  Our pedi said to get one with a straw and one that isn't leak-proof (i.e., water should come out if you turn it upside down).  Which brand/type are you guys using?

  • @flojo973 - I bought a 2-pack of nuby ones at target yesterday.  One of them has the spout, the other the straw...

They are leak-proof, though.  Out of curiosity, did the doctor say why you shouldn't use the leak-proof ones?

  • We were gifted a Bluum box subscription!  SUPER fun by the way.  You get a monthly box of stuff meant for your baby at that age.  We've loved the products so much we asked for another gift subscription for Christmas from grandparents!  In LO's 5 month box we got this sippy.  We are going to try it this week!  Call me stupid, but can 6 month olds really drink from straws already?  I'm not ready for this!  Bring back my itty bitty baby!

  • We have had issues with LO taking the bottle after the first few months without any issue. I introduced a sippy out of desperation just to try another option and she likes it. She takes sips of water during meals from it and we still struggle with BM but at least now she drinks some vs. none from a bottle. She would just chew the nipple and pull away and eventually get pissed and start crying. So it's an improvement. The cup is leak proof. Tried one with a straw yesterday but don't think we are quite there yet.
  • We gave up on the dippy cup and have been teaching her to just drink from a cup. It's a little messy but going surprising well. I think we'll work on cups with straws as well.

  • I feel like I'm holding DD back and haven't introduced things I should. At the last pedi appointment we talked about food and she is finally showing interest so that is happening this week. But I guess I'm behind on the sippy. Is 5/6 month when it's usually introduced? BM/Formula in it? I know no water to drink until after 6 months

  • @clwheel - LO is 5.5 months and I was told we could start giving him an ounce or two of distilled water or 100% juice each day.  I tried with water last night.  But if you're not ready for that, I would do BM!

My doctor also said that we could give him decaffeinated black tea with a little bit of lemon.  He is old-school Russian (born and educated there) and I am honestly not sure if he was joking or not.

  • @lest12 - I can't for the life of me remember what the pedi suggested that.  I will ask DH and let you know!

  • Some people's babies are already drinking out of cups and sippy cups?!?!?! Oh god we must be very behind. I gave her a straw once and she had zero idea what to do with it. She chewed on it.

Also, how many exclusive BFers out there are giving their babies water?? I'm totally not. When does that start?
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that suddenly feels behind @LCGroenewe!!! I think no water until 6 months was what I had heard? Although DD sometimes drinks the water I pour on her in the bath. We exclusively BF and will probably see if she is interested in purees this week.

  • @mullenem - thanks, I will try the straw since he was having a little trouble with the spout last night!

I googled the tea thing.  Apparently, it's a thing.  Some people say it is fine and to do it for taste, some people worry that even decaf will cause dehydration.  I'm so shocked, I had never heard that before and thought maybe the Dr. was crazy.

Those of you giving sippys a try... I am giving LO a half jar of vegetables at dinner time, then she has a small bottle after.  Do I just start trying to replace this bottle with breast milk that she eats along with her veggies from a sippy cup? Do you not give BM, but instead give more veggies and then once they hit 6 months they get water to drink with meals?  I feel so dumb when it comes to giving my baby actually food.  HELP ME BE NOT SO DUMB!?!  Currently she is not "drinking" anything with her "meal"... She eats her veggies, then we have a bottle.

Love tit because I feel the same way... at least you are one step ahead already giving food!

  • This is new to me as well! I've been giving her 2.5oz of puree veggie for dinner for the last two weeks and planning to add lunch starting next week. I think I'll put the sippy cup out and see if she is interested.  We have the Tommee Tippee bottle with handles and she has been holding on pretty well during feeding.  I'll change the top to the sippy kind and see if she knows what to do with it.

@SarahS11 - I have no idea what daycare does, but at home, DD BFs then has some solids. She's still eating a couple of ounces each meal. She only gets a couple of tbsps of water max while eating solids.

Same, except I'm just doing the water with the sippy cup now. Before I would offer an ounce of bm in a bottle to give him something to wash form.

  • @krystalann94‌ - I think that I posted that wrong. I'll dilute the juice, but only buy 100% juice - none of the sugary stuff.

Though my dr didn't specify, tbh. He said to give him "tastes". I don't know what that means, ha. But my dr is leaving a lot of it up to what dh and I think he's ready for, cues, etc.

  • I'm not ready for this! :(

  • You bring up a good point though! What is the point of juice at this age?

Even taste, I feel like they don't need to acquire the taste for the sweetness.

I should do a little more reading on all of this!

    image        image

  • I was told veggies before fruit to not get them used to the sweet and our pedi basically said she never recommends juice, she's rather you fed them oranges (when the time is right) to get the juice that way or apples, etc.

I guess every doctor is different?

  • Haven't started anything yet, strictly on thawed BM and formula a. Not sure when we will start. Soon I guess, we are in no big hurry.
  • @lest12‌ I bet your pediatrician is being serious. In my husband's family babies get barley or corn tea very early. You can even find boxes of barley tea in the Korean stores with babies drinking out of sippy cups on the box.
  • OMG I also had a hard time getting them back together, @amoot890!  I felt like a dope.

@miss renee - is that the thing with non-spill proof?  I also thought you had to suck pretty hard to get anything out (that sounds dirty but there's no better way to say it).  I was wondering how LO was going to do it.

@katcameback - interesting!  I figured it might have been a cultural thing with the dr, too.  He said it would soothe LO at night if he was upset.  If we have many more nights like last night, I might try it!

  • I bought a 2-pack of the ones @SarahS11 has. They'll go in LO's Christmas stocking... she's been so crazy with teething and we plan to start sleep training once this current tooth cuts through, so I am in no rush to introduce anything new. I want to talk to her pedi about it at her 6 month appointment, anyway, which isn't until the end of the month.

  • We tried the sippy we have last night... LO was eating green beans, so I put a small amount of BM in her cup and tried to let her explore. She picked it up and put it in her mouth right away... but mainly she just chewed on it.  When she chewed on it, some milk would spill out into her mouth and she would act confused, do her little fake cough, and side eye glare at me. I don't think she is a fan just yet!  We might try a straw one sometime soon to see if that is any better. I'm not really in a rush so we will just take our time trying some out! It was kind of humorous to get a baby glare!

  • My pedi said at E's four month appt that we could start giving him food and up to four ounces of water a day. We have done neither. (Though he did grab a piece of roll out of DH's hand and shove it in his mouth and chew, so that's something?). I just am too lazy and don't want to mess up his routine at this point. FFFC? He won't be six months til the 26th so we will start around then. I did get sippy cups for his stocking.
  • W has taken Dr. Browns before but just started boycotting all bottles in general. We tried an OXO sippycup (bru carries them) today and he really liked it! We'll see how tomorrow goes...
  • I think I need a different cup. Nothing comes out of these nuby ones. Poor kid is working so hard, too!

  • We have an agent transition cup I want to try tonight. He has sucked out of a straw before when stealing my water jug. He also drinks from a cup too when you give into him vim hoping he likes the cup. Bru wnt out a coupon for a free Mickey Mouse sippy cup I want to pick up this week as another option.

  • I've tried cups, straws, spoons, advent sippy cup and she still spits out most of her water. Ugg any suggestions ?
  • LO couldn't figure out the Tommee Tippee sippy.  Not sure if it's because we also use that for regular feeding, just a different nipple, so she is a bit confused.  We tried Munchkin sippy and she was able to use it just fine.  It's spill proof and all she has to do is bite on the top and little drops will come out. If she wants to get more out, she will have to suck hard.  I tried and it is NOT easy.  But since she isn't frustrated with it, we'll keep using it and see how it goes.
