Toofs and nursing

So, um, any advice on dealing with a nipple biter? He's killing me. If I ended the nursing session every time he bit, he'd never nurse. I'm seriously considering just weaning him and going to formula for the next two months. Any other ideas? My boobs thank you in advance.

Re: Toofs and nursing

  • Lurking from J14... We just went through this for about a month. My 10 month old was biting me so hard he was drawing blood. He would want to
nurse but then cry when I'd end the session due to biting. I tried all the suggestions and had a lot of anxiety while nursing.

It turned out to be his front two
teeth. Now that they are in he's back to normal.

What I did was give him bottles of pumped milk and nurse MOTN. For some reason he never bit me at night. It sucked adding pumping sessions in when I was at home but it got us through the worst of it!

  • No advice on biting, but since my LO recently got her top teeth, she's grazing them against my nipple while she sucks. I have no clue what to do about this and it is super painful.

    Dang teeth.
  • If you think you may wean, it'd be worth it to delatch and put him down, and then try again in a few minutes. If he's hungrier for a day, it may make him more focused. The worst it can do is make no difference. Perhaps it'll help.

I bet when the front teeth are through, it'll all stop.

Be hyper vigilant when you nurse. Watch his latch. He can't bite when properly latched. If it changes, delatch and offer again.

  • @RondackHiker‌ he generally bites me before he really gets latched on, so I don't really get any warning. I'll have to try setting him down, though. He's definitely teething right now, so hopefully he'll ease up once they break skin.

Ev was doing that for a bit. Just hang in there!

DS did it for a for a few weeks and then nursing was great again.

There is no shame in quitting and none in waiting it out.

Thanks. It's pretty much the last straw in my nursing hatred. I keep telling myself "two more months", but I refuse to spend those last two months with bloody nips. I'll give it another week or two, then reassess.
  • If you hate nursing, throw in the towel.

I love nursing and constant biting while the damn teeth came in nearly ended it.

If you hate it, don't tolerate bloody nips!

Why are you still doing it?

  • Mostly because he refuses to drink from a bottle and because I don't want to pay for formula. I also feel like, I've made it this long, I should just tough it out, you know?

How does DS react after he bites you?

He doesn't, really. He gets mad if I take his boob away, but otherwise, it's just a non-event to him.
  • Thanks, @TyrannosaurusLex‌ , I'll have to give that a try. He hasn't really loved the teethers in the past, but he may appreciate them more now.
