Cloth Diapering

AIO vs. Pocket Diapers

I am currently using prefolds, but would like to switch to AIO's or Pocket Diapers.  Anyone have experience with both and have a preference?

Re: AIO vs. Pocket Diapers

  • I use both and prefer AIO at this stage (LO is 10 weeks) because there are no extra steps for laundry. Sidenote, BG FT line dry much faster than the 4.0 and Grovias for me. What I've learned from this board though is what works well now may not work later so I'm holding onto the pockets.

  • We like the AIOs for my husband or mom when they do the diaper changes because there's nothing to unstuff.
I like pockets because they're a little more budget friendly, and because you can stuff them with whatever you want (like prefolds or flats).
I liked flats & prefolds more when my LO was younger and less wiggly.  These days it's like trying to put a diaper on a spastic octopus.
  • You really should just try a few and see what you like. For me it comes down to having a preference for natural fibers, since they seem to wash up a little more easily in my extremely hard water. And, why not have both. Simplex OS fit better on DS from an earlier age, but it took him a long time to chunk up enough to wear some brands of pockets and not get leaks. Then this summer DS was in between rise settings with the Simplex, so we had to take those out of the rotation for a few months.  I like that we can swap out the MF that comes with most pockets for whatever natural fiber inserts we prefer. Especially when we travel -- pockets stuffed with flats are always part of my travel stash, since they dry so quickly. So even if I have some slow-drying diapers with us, the flats are usually ready to go. Probably means I can have a half-day's less diapers in my travel stash.

I lol'd at spastic octopus. I say a diaper change here is like trying to wrangle a monkey.

But to answer your question, I prefer pockets due to being able to customize absorbency and for the price difference. I don't really like stuffing pockets but just do it while watching a tv show and it's no big deal. I also like just laying a bamboo insert in a cover for a quick and fairly easy diaper.

  • I've never used an aio but I love my pockets because they are so customizable. I also really got to like flips and just padfold a prefold or flat and lay it in. That however never would have worked before she had solid poop or I would have had to use a new cover every single time she pooped!
  • Just try some and see what you like. I had a lot of BG 4.0's in the beginning. I liked that they dried fast (I line dried the pocket and machine dried the inserts). But I HATE stuffing pockets. I hate touching microfiber. I now have a combination of AIO's (simplex, elementals) and AI2's (best bottoms, etc). I actually end up saving the AIO's mostly for daycare or when my husband is left in charge. I use mostly the best bottoms or flats or prefolds folded into a cover.

  • I think it's nice to have both.  I'm another vote for preferring pockets because you can stuff with prefolds/flats/etc and adjust the absorbancy but it's nice to have the AIO's too.  When I do laundry, I hang everything except wipes and inserts, and it's nice to have a few that I can grab off the line to use right away before I get around to stuffing.

  • Everyone is going to have a different answer to this.  I loathe pockets.  My freetimes are my main diaper, but I love best bottoms too (AI2.)

  • I started with AI2s after the nb period then went to pockets around 6 months ago, now I'm back to my AI2s (including flats in covers) because I got tired of stuffing and because pockets (and AIOs would be the same) take up so much more storage space. Space is something I don't have a lot of.

  • Yup, definitely try some to see what works for you. I preferred pockets with my first because I dried my diapers in a humid basement, and AIOs took forever to dry! With my second, I'm a little more tolerant of them because we're in a different house situation :)

  • We are trying prefolds, fitteds, pockets and AIOs for the newborn period. So far my favorites are the GMD workhorses and my Kawaii P&N pockets. I really dislike my Imagine bamboo newborn AIOs from Nickis. They are supposed to fit until 13 pounds and barely fit my 10 pound daughter. Plus they take forever to dry and the aplix is weak.
