Books for Christmas

Hey everyone. So I want to add to LO's book collection for Christmas and I was looking for some suggestions. What are some of your favorite books to read to LO? I'm looking for ones that aren't too long, I suppose more age appropriate for a 1 year old, and with great pictures/illustrations. Thanks for your suggestions!

Does anyone else have a baby that is not interested in books yet?  He won't sit still long enough to look at the pictures and he really just wants to eat the books, or throw them across the room.  I feel like we aren't reading to him enough because of this. I suppose I'm doing permanent damage to my child. @-)

Same boat. LO used to love to be read to before bed. Would be fussing, I whip out a book and start reading, and she becomes quiet and intrigued. Now all she wants to do is turn the pages/close the book and practice those skills. Or crawl out of her room into the hallway and play with anything out there. Don't think it's permanent damage - just think it's the stage!

  • @mamatoosh I wouldn't worry about it! I would just keep trying but if he gets restless move on to a different activity and try again later. You want reading to be fun, right, so stick with shorter books, fun rhymes, books that have "activities", etc.

I love "On the Night You Were Born", I think it's so sweet.

Same thing for us. DD will sit for maybe 1or 2 pages and that's it. I've tried just pointing out stuff in the pictures and it's really no different. She will pull books off her shelf and play with them but really only enjoys opening and closing them.

I hope she starts to enjoy books and reading eventually because I loved it when I was a kid. My mom used to talk about reading us stories every night and I feel like we are definitely failing in that area because she just isn't interested.

Over here, we are loving lift-the-flap books.

Also he enjoys chewing on them. :)

  • DD loves books and being read to. Right now she is into the touch and feel books. "That's Not My Snowman" is a current favourite. She turns the pages and goes right for the different textures. We keep one of those in the car and she'll do the same thing on car rides.
  • Karen Katz books were a huge hit with DD and now DS. She even has holiday themed books.

  • DD will sit for 30 minutes and be perfectly content being read to or looking at books herself. She really likes the Nancy Tillman books. We don't always get all the way through them, but usually. She's currently OBSESSED with brown bear brown bear... particularly the purple cat page- I don't get it. Her longtime favorite is, I Love You As Much"
  • Thanks for the suggestions!

She loves to turn the pages, lift the flaps and "pet" the animals.

  • DS loves Brown Bear Brown Bear right now. It will calm him down almost instantly. We have the one with the little sliding doors that show the next animals. He gets mad if we don't slide them.
His long time favorite is an Elmo book called Eyes & Nose, Fingers & Toes. That was the first book I could ever get him to sit still for. To this day, when I pull it out, he will crawl into my lap and snuggle with me so I can read it to him. It doesn't matter what he is doing.
  • DD loves books. They are always the first thing she reaches for to play with. We have a bunch of the Disneys small world books (they have mirrors, flaps, textures, etc), reasons I love winter is adorable, she has a random book about William and Kate that she adores, I just got out a bunch of my old Christmas books for the season too.
