3rd Trimester

Boring topic, I know... but I must have information!

I'm talking to one of my friends about humidifiers.  She says that her pedi recommends a cool air one... I just got my warm air one in the mail yesterday.. I've read reviews that it's leaky..

So here's my questions.

Cool Air or Warm Air, and Why?

And which one do you recommend?

(I'm returning the Vicks one..)

  • I have always been told to use cool air ones, can't remember the reasoning right now though!

  • Why are you returning the vicks one? I just realized how i know nothing about humidifiers because i hadn't even heard of warm air/cool air.

  • cool mist per my pedi. Warm mist can grow mold and be a burn risk.

I have a cheapo one I bought at BB&B. If I had to buy another I'd buy one that DOES NOT need filters....it's a pain to replace the filters all the time. I wish I would have spent a bit more and bought the one with a built in permanent filter.

  • Whenever I've heard about humidifiers, I've heard to get a cool air one... I couldn't tell you why though!  I just know that if I were to go get one, that's what I'd get based on previous recommendations.
  • The cool air ones help break up congestion, that's all I know!
  • Ditto Madhatter...
  • Cool air because the warm air ones can produce more germs and germs thrive in warm areas.

Too many reviews said it was leaky.. and for that price I can get one that has better reviews.

  • Strictly from my sisters' perspectives:  they like the warm.  Because easier to regulate the temp and keep babies warm.  One sister in particular felt that her child was not sleeping well due to being cold.  She bought the warm and problem stopped.  Don't know anything about leakage, though.
  • My mom swears by warm air humidifiers so we got one for DD when she had a cold a while back.  It worked great. HOWEVER - if you leave the water in there more than 24hrs, it gets moldy and smells bad.  I tossed it.  I will be getting a cool air one for DS.
  • I personally like cool air ones better bc i hate having hot steamy air near me after living in alabama.

BUT you still gotta clean the cool air ones every use anyway bc mold can grow regardless of what temp it humidifies at.

  • OMG..........going to call sisters now.  Mold and germs don't sound good.  Funny thing is that all three babies have been really healthy.  But the warm sound kind of terrible............sorry.
  • Ditto the other poster that you have to clean them regardless.  I do like mine because it's all dishwasher safe (well, the parts that touch the water) so it's easy to clean each day.

  • We use cool mist only (pedi said specifically not to use warm mist for whatever reason).  We have the Crane frog humidifier for DS's room and it works really well (especially now with the terrible cold he has).
  • DH got one for Christmas for the nursery at Costco.

The reviews I've read on it say it's good. ?It's listed for $124.99 on Costco's website. ? I haven't used it yet...so I can't give a personal review. ?It does have warm or cool air settings and no parts that have to be replaced (wicks, filters, etc.) ?I was excited about that part! ?It's a little bigger than others I'd looked at...but if it is as durable and quiet as the reviews I've read have said, then no big deal!

  • Cool Mist is what you want..I can't remember why though...hehe. I love the Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier...I use it every night!!!
  • I've read cool air ones are recommended. My only thought why would be (and only b/c I myself learned as a kid w/ my parents warm air one) that you can get burned by the steam coming out of a warm air one. Once the little ones become mobile, I would think it could become dangerous. But idk, things are a lot more high tech and made safer than what they were almost 27 years ago!
