1st Trimester

Going crazy after being told i could be having a etopic pregnancy.. :( really need some reassurance

edited December 2014 in 1st Trimester
my period comes on the 11th of every month... i have a 30-32 days cycle.. it usually last 7 days .. after my period ended ( on the 17th) 4 days later, i began spotting.. i found out on the 23rd of november that i am pregnant.. i wasn't gonna test, but i dont spot after my periods.. i figured it was because i had sex after it ended, and i just irritated it or something.. but anyways, i tested and got 3 clear positives... i then decided that i should go to the ER to figure out why i was spotting... they said it could be normal and that as long as it wasn't heavy and i wasn't doubling over, i should be fine.. they gave me a papsmear, and ultrasound and done blood work along with urine.. and everything came out normal. he checked my cervix and estimated that i was 2-3 maybe 4 weeks pregnant.. and said that the ultrasound wouldn't be able to pick up anything cause im still early..he told me to come back within 48 hrs to recheck my levels.. well, i went back the next day and they dropped from 200- 100.. i freaked out.. i knew that wasn't normal, they did ANOTHER ultrasound and blood work, the whole 9 yards and again, everything was fine except they diagnosed me with a completed miscarriage. well, one week later (meaning last night) i went to another hospital because something didn't seem right with my results and i needed a second opinion.. i asked for a hcg test and she said they were 222.. today i got a call from the high risk pregnancy place and she was filling me head up with horrible things like i could be having a ectopic pregnancy.. but i haven't spotted in over a week, my breast hurt more every day, and i am getting new pregnancy symptoms. i dont think i am having any complications like they are making me believe.. she was soo rude when she called me and said that my levels shouldn't be 222 at 4 weeks and they NEEDED to be a 6,000. i then just hung up on her and proceeded to cry. they have gave me the run around on these HCG levels.. they never gave me the exact numbers. i found out from the nurse my levels were actually 269  the first time instead of 200.. i am soo fucking tired of this! i cant take it anymore!! i dont know what to think. i refuse to think there's something wrong with the baby or that i am having a MC or the other. i am healthy, and have a 4 year old and didn't have any complications with him. all this is like a nightmare. tomorrow i am going to a REAL obgyn and getting a better result. something isn't right.. i think the first hospital messed up my results or it was a lab error. has this ever happened to anyone, before??

  • I am sorry you are going through this. If you are having a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, I promise you it isn't because you aren't healthy or you did something wrong.

As far as the drop in HCG levels, the only time I have heard of it dropping early on is due to miscarriage. For your sanity, I suggest not going to the ER again unless you are actually having an emergency as they aren't truly equipped to handle early pregnancy. Symptoms are not a sign of pregnancy viability, either.

  • ER's are not the place for non-emergencies & they definitely don't do much for you as far as reliable pregnancy information.

Talk to your OB provider ASAP. Until then all you can do is wait.

  • I hope that everything turns out well for you. It is hard to not have answers as to what is going on.

That being said please don't go to the ER. Spotting is not an emergency and the doctors do not specialize in pregnancy and are notorious for giving false information. Everyone's HCG levels are different. The number doesn't matter so much as the fact that they are doubling every 49 hours. You made a statement about the "first" hospital. Making multiple trips to the hospital before an OB is beyond me let alone going to different hospitals. If is best to always have your levels checked by the same lab, as some labs can vary. Please go to an OB and stay away from ERs. I wish you the best of luck and hope this turns out well for you.
  • I agree ER isn't a place to really help in early pregnancy. They really aren't equipped. So now you can't really tell if the information they have given you is correct or not. I would begin the process again with your OB, have her test your HGC levels to see if they are continuing to double. Good Luck, keep us posted.
  • i have no insurance, iv tried calling around to find a obgyn that will take payment up front for at least to be seen to get a better opinion. im in tears right now cause i feel stuck. im def staying away from ERs. i need a miracle :(

Try for a Planned Parenthood? Was this pregnancy a surprise? Insurance is important. Can you call your local assistance center & get on WIC or another program. You should qualify for Medicaid.

  • *UPDATE* i made an appointment with a obgyn, and they automatically assumed it was a EP because of ONE drop in my levels. the did an ultrasound and didn't find anything. nothing in the uterus, nothing in my tubes. only my left ovarian cyst, which was detected at the ER when i went. they scared me into getting the MTX shot. before i went to OB, they asked for more blood work.. well, my levels doubled, so like i said, they assumed it to be EP. my levels were 222 on the 2nd. on the 4th they were 329, i got the shot on the 4th, and on the 7th, they were 544. i went back yesterday, and they had went up 20 points. so they didn't double, but they didn't go down like they hoped.. soo tomorrow im having to go get another draw and depending on those results, i may have to get another dose of MTX. i have read soo many things about doctors misdiagnosing 40 percent of healthy pregnancies as EP. that's  a LOT. they didn't see anything on the ultrasounds. however, we did see two empty small sacs, but they said it wasn't in my uterus.. i kept thinking maybe they were in my uterus, but my uterus is tilted??? they didn't say anything about that either. they just pushed me into getting the shot.
  • I'm not sure why your OB is doing an ultrasound so early. Of course they are not going to see anything. I had some heavy spotting during my 1st trimester and they monitored my levels until it was over 2,000 and then ordered an ultrasound to make sure it wasn't an EP causing the bleeding. Even then, my doctor said there's the possibility it may to be too early to see anything on an ultrasound. I hope everything works out for you. The waiting and not knowing definitely sucks but unless you're in pain or bleeding enough to fill a pad every hour, just take a breath and do something to take your mind off of this.
