Trouble TTC

Question about cysts...

So I had a mid-cycle US today with my RE and she saw a 3cm cyst on my left ovary. She didn't seem to worried about it, and since my follicles (in the same ovary as the cyst) were kinda immature, she wants me to go back Friday to see how the follicles are maturing. I did not have a CD3 US for some reason, and now, in hindsight, I am wondering why, and thinking that I should have, so the cyst would have been caught?

So does anyone have any experience with this? I have seen that a lot of people have been benched because of cysts. Should I have been benched? Could I release eggs from an ovary that has a cyst, since my other ovary has no maturing follicles right now? Will it have a negative side effects if I am not benched?

I will be asking all of these questions Friday, but just wanted to ask the 3T'ers if they have any experience with it... Thanks!

Re: Question about cysts...

  • @iputketchuponketchup I'm really hoping its not the latter. I asked about the cyst rupturing (since I have a history of this) and she said it was not actively bleeding, meaning it wasn't at risk for rupturing? Does this make sense? I always receive so much information at these appointments, that I feel like some information goes in one ear and out the other.

Now that I am thinking about it, I think me not having a CD3 US was partly my fault, I don't remember her telling me to do it, or she did, but I was just so upset over the news of the negative BETA I had received moments earlier that I didn't hear it. So I didn't call and make an appointment. Stupid me.

  • I don't have a lot of advice, but I am currently embroiled in cyst drama myself. All I can say is that mine was pretty big at my ultrasound, which is why I was benched. I remember someone saying something about having their estrogen levels with a cyst, but for the life of me, I can't find the post anywhere. Maybe a more knowledgeable person will chime in. I hope you get some answers on Friday.

  • I'm doing injects + TI and just went for baseline yesterday. The doc said I had a larger cyst on my right ovary, but they would only be concerned about it if it was producing hormones (b/w showed it wasn't). If I was doing IVF they would likely have cancelled this cycle, but I'm not. The only downside for me is that the cyst is taking up so much space on my right ovary that there's no room for actual follies to develop. My left ovary looked fine, so they said it was okay to proceed as planned.

I had a cysts about that size, but at my baseline appointment. I was lucky in that my RE checked my E2 level and my cyst was not producing estrogen and I was able to move forward. The cyst slowly shrunk as my other follies matured. With cysts, if it is responding to estrogen then the fertility meds will "feed" it and you are at risk for rupture, but if it is not responding to or producing estrogen it will just die away on its own. I would maybe ask about getting your E2 checked if you haven't as it could indicate if the cyst is a concern.
Thank you for this. I will ask for a E2 if its the same or bigger on Friday.

  • Whichever ovary the cyst is on, it has pretty much equal effect on both ovaries - either little/no effect if it's not producing estrogen, or the effect of telling your brain that a lead follie is developing so stop developing others, if it is producing estrogen.

I ovulated normally for a few months (just temping/OPKs, no meds) when it turns out I had two 5-6cm cysts growing - so feeling hopeful that you will ovulate normally this month and then check at your next baseline (if BFN) and wait or take BC pills (if needed) to help shrink it.
