  • It depends on the audience. If it is my siblings I would probably say y'all but if it was a more formal setting I would probably say everyone (hi everyone, can I have everyone's attention, etc). The again I use "you guys" a lot too for friends! So it depends!

I say "you" or "you guys" for the most part, but I occasionally say "y'all." Depends.

  • Y'all to my family and friends who are from/still live in the South. (MS born and bred) Generally use 'you guys' around our friends here who are mostly Yankees. I actually don't sound Southern at all (neither does my mom, and she's from a really small town in MS) in daily life, it's a quirk. I get mildly Southern when drunk.

I never ever heard "yous" growing up in South Jersey.

The only place I've ever heard it is in Philly and usually at some dive bar.
Being across the river from Brooklyn, I hear "yous" far too often. It makes my ears bleed.

  • I say "you guys". I'm a Yankee. But serious question... What in the hell is "yinz"!?
    From Wikipedia:

Yinz is a second-person plural pronoun used mainly in Western Pennsylvania including Pittsburgh, but it is also found throughout the Appalachians.[1] (See: Pittsburgh English.)

  • I say "you all".  What do the other Canadians here say?
  • I say you guys and it really annoys me when people feel the need to replace guys with ladies if it's a group of women. I don't know why. To me, guys is unisex (in this context) and it's just annoying when someone feels the need to act like it's not.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • In one of my first waitressing jobs we were trained not to say "guys".
So I got used to using several options: ladies, gentleman, folks, gang, friends, sexy beasts, etc. depending on the group.

I'm from WV, we say y'all. We also say yunz. Sometimes I wonder how people from other regions understand us, we have a unique dialect.
  • You all in a proper setting, as it doesn't give away a region. and y'all with friends. I hate 'you guys'.

  • It used to be "you guys" when I lived in Chicago (born and raised there). Then I moved to Louisiana and it became "y'all" pretty quickly. I probably change back and forth depending where I am.

I totally get that. My dad is from WV and still has a strong accent at times. My brother and I ended up with a weird combination of West Virginian and Southern accents.
  • Wow. I just now realized y'all means you all. Haha a bit slow on that one!! I've never heard someone say that IRL, just on TV.
  • I picked "you guys" but most of the time I take the "you" out and just say "guys". Is that weird?
Not weird. I do that myself on occasion.

  • The only time I've heard people say "yous" is on the Real Housewives of New Jersey, and it sounds as trashy as you think it would...
  • I use "you guys" primarily.

"Yinz" is a Pittsburgh, PA thing. I grew up in that area and I can't tell you the amount of time people use that. When I get going about something it comes out. There was someone who posted a thread and wrote "yunz" and that's not the way they spell it there. Comedian Billy Gardell (Mike from Mike & Molly) is from there and he has a moment in his "Halftime" special where he does Pittsburgh talk because it was filmed there. Gives me memories!

  • I picked other because I'm a weird mix. I sometimes says "you guys" and sometiems say "y'all". I'm origianlly from the mid-west but I'm now a southern girl. I sort o like the "y'all"!
  • I say y'all all the time but my southern accent isn't very thick since I moved a lot when I was young. I can say though when I'm drunk, my southern accent multiplies by a thousand or when I get angry you can hear it a bit more.

My accent comes and goes, but "y'all" is forever. Also calling all soda "coke" and grocery carts "buggies." ;)

When we were dating, I asked DH to grab me a buggy at the grocery store. The look in his eyes was pure confusion.

    eta words

Yes!  H is from the Boston area where they call them carts.  Then here's me, "Babe, can you grab a buggy?"  H's face was priceless!
