Nursing? Bottles? Cups?

Reading TTT made me wonder, where are you at with the milk situation? I was a little surprised that some of you are off of bottles altogether!

DD has three 5oz bottles of WCM a day. I even top them up with an ounce of water for volume and she still wants more! We just dropped two 5oz bottles of formula about 2 weeks ago. I tried giving her milk in a sippy cup and a regular cup but she looked at me like I lost my mind. I dread the day I have to get rid of the bottles. Which brings me to ... when is it recommended to stop with the bottles?

Re: Nursing? Bottles? Cups?

  • Im in the same boat as @cabusbey‌ with DD attached to the boob. She'll take a few sips a day of WCM out of a sippy, other than that she has access to water in her sippy all day (she drinks about 2 full sippys of water a day) and nurses 2 times a day, before nap and bed (she doesn't nurse to sleep though). I will nurse MOTN if she wakes and isn't able to put herself back to sleep, which is pretty rare now. She's pretty much refused bottles since she was a newborn, which is ok since I'm a SAHM.

  • DD is still breastfeeding, and drinks water out of a straw cup. She hardly drinks her water most days though.. If she does it's maybe an oz at the very most but we let her have access to it all the time for the most part. She refuses WCM.
  • My LO is no longer nursing or taking bottles.  He stopped nursing about 2 weeks after his first birthday-that was after about a month of gradual weaning.  I believe he was off bottles not too much after that.  He drinks milk and water out of sippy cups and straw cups.

  • Add us to the "still attached to the boob" club. No bottles, he will drink water or coconut milk from a sippy or straw cup. But he prefers not to.
  • Dd is currently 14.5 months. We stopped nursing around 13 months so I didn't want to stop her bottles at the same time.. she has 3 6 Oz bottles a day and loves her "bubbas". When she wakes up in the morning the first things I hear are mama baba mama baba baba lol. If I put milk in a straw or sippy cup she will only take a few sips and wants nothing more to do with it so I'm not sure how to transition her over.. she slams water out of her straw cups like crazy though.
  • While I'm at work, she gets a 4oz bottle of WCM (used to be BM) for her morning nap, and water or WCM in her sippy the rest of the day. She nurses and does water when I'm home. She still nurses to sleep and a couple times overnight (we bed share).

I asked our pedi about the bottles at her 12 mo appt. He said bottles aren't a big deal to him until closer to 2, and not to fret over weaning her off them ASAP.

  • We have been off bottles since 8 months and LO was addicted to straws so we went quickly from soft spout to straws by her first bday. WCM from her bday on. 8oz at breakfast and dinner. Water with 15% juice the rest of the day.

We stopped bottles at her first bday. She drinks about 10-16 oz of milk a day and probably another 8oz of water too. We use straw and sippy cups interchangeably. With DD1 the pedi wanted her off bottles by 15 mo and that's what we did.

  • DD still nurses to sleep at night and any wake ups through the night. I would love to stop the night wake ups but I'm afraid it's going to be awful. When she wakes up she sits up and cries until I go in there and give her the boob.......she does wcm in Sippy cups through out the day, usually hard spout. Water in a straw cup for the most part. She only drinks 9-12 oz of milk in her Sippy per day but also eats cheese daily. I started giving her wcm at 11.5 months, just small tastes at first. It took her about 2 months to get to where she drinks more than 1 Sippy. And I have to offer it to her often through out the day. When I work she doesn't get as much milk because no one else stays on it. She also drinks it more in the afternoon. Will only take a sip or two in the morning but will really drink from it in the evening.
  • during the day DD drinks from a sippy at DC and thats mostly what she drinks from at home with the exception of night time, which she drinks from a bottle.  I am a little reluctant to ween from that right now because she has not been a great sleeper and that is still part of our routine.  I guess im more focused on getting her sleeping better and then tackling the last bottle.  DS weened himself sometime around 16-18 months on his own.

  • Sippy cups for us. Only the ones with a spout so that she can tip them far back like a bottle. At DD's one year appointment her pediatrician basically said "today is the last day she uses a bottle". I was terrified because she loved her bottles and I was totally to ignore him. DH forced me to go through with it and after about 2 grumpy days she had mastered the cup.

On vacation we held glasses of milk with a straw in them (we wanted to avoid washing her sippy cups in the water) and it seemed to work well so perhaps we are ready to attempt a straw sippy cup.

  • I think our pedi recommended dropping bottles by 15 months, but I just decided to stop them on his birthday. He took to it pretty well and now only does milk out of cups, usually at breakfast and I think morning snacktime at daycare. Oh and we stopped nursing a couple of weeks after his birthday. It went much smoother than I anticipated.
