Re: Breast Pump Accessories

  • I have that and extra bottles to pump into (wishful thinking here) but you might want to look into things like nipple butter, soothies, bags to store milk in, bottles and that sort of thing

  • @kefttsc‌ - I recall using a "lansinoh" one that I really liked.

Bottles. Tubing. Extra nipple attachment things. Extra carting case for expresses milk. Extra cold pack for keeping in case with expressed milk. Extra tops....

  • I ended up buying the next size up of shields to see what fits better, membranes, valves w/ membranes, and bottles. I'll probably pick up a spare set of tubing too. I am not super big on running out of bits that are a pain to track down the stores near my home. Nor do I want to do the hand washing of the accessories more than once a day either.

It really depends on how often you will be pumping and your ability/desire to clean the parts throughout the day.

When I returned to work FT I typically pumped 3 x's during the day (morning, lunch and afternoon).  I found it helpful to have 3 sets of parts (flanges, connectors, membranes and valves) and then brought everything home to clean after work.  I also ended up getting extra pump storage bottles since they accumulated in the refrigerator over the course of a week.

I would also recommend having extra tubing on hand as well.  I had to replace it several times over the course of 12 months due to holes, mold, etc.

I would hold off on buying extra flanges since you do not know what size you are just yet.  I EPed for over a year for DS1 and had to switch flange size at about 3 months and ended up having to buy 3 more sets in a larger size.

Also, if you pump extra that you want to freeze, I recommend the freezer bags for storage.  If you freeze them lying flat, they will stack nicely in the freezer.  I prefer the Lansinoh bags over the Medela.

  • Eventually you'll probably want extra membranes as they tend to wear out.  I never had a spare set of parts and it wasn't an issue for me, but a lot of working/pumping moms say they're a must have.  I had extra storage bottles - larger ones were great for combining the milk from one session.

As for cream, Lansinoh lanolin is THE BEST.  Their pads are really good too - I leaked like crazy and never had a problem with those pads.  Also their bags are great since they freeze flat and are easy to store.

  • If you are going to be pumping a lot - I would suggest using Olive Oil instead of a nipple cream.  I EP'd for 10.5 months with Hailey and found that the Lansinol just got all over the pump parts or my bra, and my nipples still got pretty raw.  What worked really well for me was to take a cotton ball and dip it in the olive oil and then just wipe the inside of each flange with it.  It kept them well lubed for the duration of my use, kept my nipples from cracking, and didn't buildup and ruin my nursing bras/tanks.

Also my friend rec'd coconut oil for nipple cream!

Mine came with shields. They weren't a problem. If you need a different size, then go get it.
  • One more suggestion - the Medela steam sterilizing bags!

  • Oh! And the other thread reminded me. Get a hands free pumping bra too!  They make a huge difference. Even something as simple as reading a book can be difficult when you have to hold the flanges on.

  • Someone suggested to me today to get the hands free nursing tanks (made by Rumina) so that you don't have to put on and take off the hands free bustier (like if you're at work). They still work for nursing with full coverage. They're expensive, but she couldn't say enough just how much she loved them.
  • As someone who will be a SAHM with no idea how much I will be pumping or if I will at all would you wait on most of these accessories? Reading these pump threads make me feel so unprepared, but I have no idea what to expect.

I do plan on getting a pump through my insurance.
Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.
