How many times a day do you offer solids?

My little guy is 7months old. I have been giving him solids at dinner time almost every day since shortly after he turned 6 months old. He usually only sits happily attempting to eat for about two heaping baby spoonfulls, which load onto the spoon in small portions and give to him. I haven't really offered him solid food at any other time of the day. Should I be offering him solids more often?

Re: How many times a day do you offer solids?

  • We started DS around 4.5 months with just small bites of purees here and there. He's 8m1w and eats breakfast (oatmeal or yogurt), lunch and dinner, each 4oz purees plus a snack (puffs/cheese). If we're home (essentially weekends) he'll have whatever we're eating. We JUST started on 3 meals a day about a week ago; I want to say we upped it to 2 meals a day around 7 months? and we've slowly added in more volume as well.

I think it's more important to follow your child's lead. We only give solids after nursing/bottle and only until he no longer looks interested. We only increased frequency and volume because he kept looking for more food

  • My little guy eat a fruit at breakfast, veggie for lunch and another veggie for dinner!!
  • We do solids 3 times a day. Usually toast for breakfast and purées and finger food lunch and dinner. When he started at 5 months, it was only dinner time.
  • Breakfast is hit or miss - he's usually content to play since he just got up.  Always lunch and dinner though, or he pitches a fit.  He just eats what I'm eating.

  • Twice. Brunch after his first nap and dinner. Sometimes it's purées and sometimes it's finger food. I'm thinking about bumping it to three meals, and definitely want to increase the amount of finger foods.

I offer anytime he is awake while I am eating. Sometimes he tries to eat. Other times he ignores the food and goes for the table toys instead. But he sits at the table with me if he isn't napping.

  • DD gets 1-2 jars of babyfood (lunch and dinner). Weekends she gets nibbles of whatever we're eating when we're eating. She's 7mo tomorrow.

  • 2-3 times a day depending on timing. If I need to keep him busy while making dinner i give him finger foods like bell peppers, apples, puffs, Cheerios. He will eat anything I put in front of him.
  • All three meals when we eat and two snacks most days. The snacks are usually cheerios, apple slice, some of my granola bar, etc. He eats every time something is put in front of him.

  • She just made 7 months on the 27th and we just do breakfast and dinner. My doctor wants her to have lunch too but its already affecting how much she wants to nurse so I'm holding off on that and snacks.

  • We are really bad at giving solids. He is usually in bed before dinner. He does have some purée at daycare. We are trying to be better about giving him something in the evening. Lately it's just been yogurt.

  • Always dinner.  On the weekend/when we're home, we've been doing lunch, also.  At day care he's been eating fruit and yogurt and then a veggie.  I'd like to move his day care foods to line up with breakfast and lunch time.

  • I try to give two purées for her at daycare and they give them to her whenever- I'll give her some food at night when she gets home but she really isn't interested.
  • Always breakfast. I really want to add in an afternoon/evening meal but i always have stuff going on in the afternoons so it gets lost in the shuffle. I think i might have dad start feeding her while i cook dinner.

  • Rarely breakfast because that's such a hectic time of day. Always lunch and dinner. I also let her have the Gerber puffs as 'snack' if she sees me eating and is actively trying to get a bite.

  • purees 1x a day at daycare (around lunchtime) and then bites of whatever I'm having at dinner/ on weekends if she is awake and interested.
