poly-vi-sol?

Ped recommended last week that we buy polyvisol and start giving it to lo. Its a vitamin d and iron vitamin I believe. We slacked and didn't make it to the store for this and after some research found that its real bitter and a lot of babies have a hard time taking it. Anyone else asked to give their babies this?

Re: poly-vi-sol?

  • We were. We haven't had any big issues giving it (knock on wood)

  • We also tried the Enfamil brand and it gave our baby dark, foul, watery poops. We have a prescription from the hospital but no pharmacy will fill it because they carry the Enfamil version OTC. so annoying

  • We also tried enfamil with DD and she hated it. She wouldn't take her bottles if it was in there. We ended up getting d drops off of amazon and have had no issues. We are now using them with the boys.

  • We give the Enfamil brand to Cam and it's been fine. No issues yet at least!

  • The doctor recommended a vitamin D supplement and a friend had given me some D drops as part of my shower gift so I have been using those. I read not great things about the poly-vi-sol (etc.) ones but the D drops have been fine.
  • I've been giving my baby the enfamil D and have felt terrible about giving him all that sugar and artificial flavoring!  I'm going to order the Carlson drops, thanks for the advice!

  • We give DD poly-vi-sol daily. It is nasty smelling and tasting, so what the nurses in the hospital showed us was to mix it with some breast milk in a bottle nipple to dilute it a bit. Doing it that way DD takes it down like a champ.
  • I use the Baby D Drops as well. Our pedi had given us a sample of the Enfamil stuff. I used it once and the smell made me gag, not to mention all the crap in it.

  • ugh, we just did the Enfamil drops this morning and I can still smell it somehow and 3 hours later still on her breath too. Yuck. She didn't throw it up or anything so I guess that's good - but I'm really not a fan. I'd consider the D vitamins but my understanding is that poly-vi-sol contains other vitamins as well, not just the D.

  • Just a note of caution. Poly-Vi-Sol is a multivitamin drop that comes with or without iron. Enfamil's vitamin d supplement is the D-vi-sol product. Beware that the Carlson Labs product above is just vitamin D. If that's all your LO needs, great.

If your LO's pediatrician thinks kiddo should get a multivitamin, the Carlson Labs drops won't be enough.

  • Our pediatrician recommends Vit D drops after two weeks but said don't worry if we forget occasionally. He said we could do polyvisol but no need. My SIL (a pediatric NP) recommended the Carlson's so that's what I'm planning to get...as soon as hubby can take baby for an hour so I can run out. CVS with a 13 day old was a bit much today.

  • I called and left a message with the nurse who spoke with the pediatrician who said it's important that I do the polyvisol because it triggers her marrow red blood cells or something like that... so looks like we'll be sucking it up.

Yes!!' Had an awful awful awful experience it! Jacob hated the taste and it gave him wicked diarhea (we got the enfamil brand & dosage is so much!) Pediatrician told us to stop giving it to him immediately (I was seconds away from taking him to urgent care after the 4th dirty diaper in an hour.

Went out and got Carlson brand drops. It's literaly one drop a day. Bottle contains 365 drops so it's all you'll ever need. It was 12.99 at whole foods or you get can it on amazon. The reviews for these vs the Enfamil Poly vi sol are unmatched!

DD doctor gave us a list of vitamins to choose from and the carlson brand was at the bottom of the list. I was going to purchase the try vi sol until i read the ingredients on that crap, no way was i giving that to my daughter. Carlson d3 it is
  • Went and got the d3 drops and they are awesome. She doesn't even notice. I'm sire my pedi won't be thrilled that I didn't take his advice but I'm not giving her iron and extra supplementation incase he can sjow she has a difficiency, which she doesn't. Kelly mom clearly states she doesn't need the iron or extra vitamins.
