Version

Does anyone have experience with having a version done? How did it go? Was it successful? Did it hurt? I am scheduled for one on Saturday and I am so nervous! Hopefully this little guy flips in the meantime :)

Re: Version

  • I've never had one but I have been told they aren't fun. I'm sorry :( I hope little man flips beforehand!

  • No experience, but have you checked out the Spinning Babies website? They have different exercises on there that are supposed to encourage LO move down. Good luck!
  • My friend had one last time around and she said it was super painful.

DD2 is currently breech.  My OB says they will address it at my next appointment (36w) if she hasn't flipped by then.  I can see how it's really nerve wracking.  I know DD1 was head down by 32w and this still breech thing feels agonizing as I sit in limbo not sure what we'll need to try or if I need to start mentally preparing myself for a c-section.

  • When I was in pre-op for my c-section the girl in the room next to me (in the surgical ward) was getting one done. They had to have an OR prepped and ready to go just in case things went south. Not a single practitioner I spoke with that day had an optimistic view of what was going to happen. I ended up getting bumped and never found out the results, but with the way they were all talking it didn't sound like many are successful.

  • According to the WHO, it sounds like the success rate is pretty decent. But if it's done before 37 weeks, it sounds like the chances of the baby turning back to breech are pretty high.

I've never had this done, but I've heard it is painful, and I've also heard that often doctors prefer to do it while mom has an epidural in place (although I think this is not so much for pain management as much as it is to help the ECV succeed?). It definitely sounds like it carries some risks and should only be done while you and baby are being closely monitored for distress.

Good luck. I know it's a hard decision.

  • No experience, but I've heard chiropractors can flip your baby. Maybe something to check into before the version. I've heard they hurt.

  • I'll be 36 and 2 days when I have it done. Optimal time is close to 37 weeks my doctor said, so we just had to schedule it when there was an available OB as I am just seeing a GP. My doctors, the resident and ultrasound tech were not too optimistic that he would move on his own based on how far down in my pelvis his bum is. But I have been doing everything in the meantime to encourage him to move. It was a hard decision to make to have it done, but I really want a vaginal birth. Hopefully everything goes smoothly, but I am super anxious.
  • I hope you get the vaginal birth you'd like, @tripletoe!

  • I had one scheduled for 39 weeks with DS. The plan was to flip him, then start inducing labor immediately. I wanted to try it without an epidural, but the staff advised me against that... They did a sono right before the procedure was about to start and saw that the fluid was low, baby was already measuring at almost 9lbs, and the cord was wrapped around his neck.
Ultimately, we decided to do a c-section that morning instead of attempting the version.

No experience, just wanted to wish you lots of luck. Let us know how it goes!

ETA: I was told that always maintaining good posture(standing or sitting) will help to keep baby head down.

  • Yup had one. Not fun, but it worked & I delivered vaginally, which was the goal. Check out spinning babies.com- I tried it ALL! Even bought & burned crazy moxibustion herbs, did daily head stands at full term, & saw a chiropractor...nothing but the version worked. I waited to have it done at 37 weeks. They do book an OR for the time that you're there, just in case u go into labor from the procedure or need a stat C section. Depending on the size/capabilities of your hospital- the Docs could be more or less aggressive about it- I.e. Some big centers will take moms to the OR .& give anesthesia so they can be more forceful with the physical turning without Mom remembering pain (maybe even leave bruises)....but smaller hospitals will be more moderate, because they have fewer options if complications arise. I was at a small place, no anesthesia, I could have called it quits at anytime. my husband held my hand, then 2 MDs stood on opposite side of me and forced the baby to flip w/ their hands. No pain meds. Lasted 5 minutes. Was totally uncomfortable & did bring tears to my eyes. But it worked! I quicky regained composure, baby was fine, & stayed head down! I think I was monitored for an hour after. If you are really wanting a vaginal delivery, you've tried other avenues, & your docs think it's safe, I'd try it. And, if faced w/ another breach babe, I would do it again. Labor brings tears to your eyes for (sometimes) 24 hours!! This was 5 minutes. Good luck!! Now, FLIP Baby!!
  • I know a girl who had a version. She said it hurt like a bitch. But it was successful.

I agree with trying chiropractic. They can't turn the baby, but they can align you and make it easier for babu to turn.
