3rd Trimester

35wks and measuring 34

Hi ladies, this concerns me a bit. This is my 5th baby. All my babies have been average in size. But with this one it seems things are different. Im 35yo with this one,iv gained only 4lbs. and i feel like my belly is on the small side. I know none of this matters. at my 30wk growth scan they said everything was perfect. she even measured a bit big. one more thing i also have GD with this one. Now yesterday at my 35wk appointment the Dr. said she is measuring a week behind. I really dont understand what that means. He doesnt seem concerned, i said small he said petite...ok petite is a good word to use. So now we get an ultrasound next monday just to make sure. On the plus side i feel iv carried her very low the whole pregnancy, which i hear can mess with the measuring tape. She is also very active everyday. Im not scared or even very worried,im just a bit sad about it. We all want our babies healthy =)   Thanks for any advice and thanks for reading.

Measuring two weeks either way is within the normal range.

  • I'm confused a little, the doctor didn't say she was unhealthy? Just she is measuring behind a week. It's completely normal to have fluctuating measurements throughout your pregnancy. Babies can go through growth spurts and then slow down. So depending on when they were measured your baby can be measuring ahead or behind. A week isn't anything to be concerned about.
  • I've consistently measured 4-6 weeks behind with both this pregnancy and my first. On ultrasound my daughter measured spot on (within a few days of my pregnancy 'week') as does this pregnancy, however ultrasounds can be wrong and be off up to a pound either direction, so that part concerned me both last time and this time.

There are various reasons why you can measure 'off' by fundal height (tape measurement), in my case it's because I have borderline unacceptably low amniotic fluid levels, which have thankfully remained stable the last 4 weeks and I'm almost at 38 weeks, so with any luck, I can make it to 38 and even 39, even if 40 is unlikely.

You can be low on fluid, or carrying low as you mentioned, but please don't take the tape measurement seriously, it's a pretty primitive way of 'sizing up' a belly/baby.

  • A normal range is +/- 2 centimeters. So you should be fine...
  • Thanks ladies! I consider myself an old pro but this measuring stuff was the first for me. I feel alot better and well see what the ultrasound tells us
  • Perfectly normal. Especially if you're doctor isn't concerned, try not to worry.
  • Yup, small doesn't mean unhealthy
