"Postpartum healing pads" really?

I hope the file attaches right. I'm not too sure about this. I seen it scrolling through my pinterest feed. With the pads being frozen, would they still absorb?  Has anyone tried this before?

Re: "Postpartum healing pads" really?

  • I didn't know of them with my son but from what I've heard from other moms they're quite helpful with pain. My understanding is they no longer absorb like a pad though.

Anyone feel free to correct if I'm wrong on that.
  • I know we recently talked about this but I can't remember the name of the thread!! I think the overall opinion was they are great for pain relief but you have to change when the cold is gone quickly or wear something under it for absorption...my sisters all swear by them so I'm definitely going to make some!

  • I've heard great things about them! I had all the stuff to make them, but didn't need since I had a c section.

While in the hospital they give you ice packs. These pads are great for when you get home and the bleeding has slowed a bit.

  • I had heavy bleeding for over a month and couldn't use anything that wasn't absorbent. So I made a Peri bottle with witch hazel, aloe and lavender EO. That's an option, too.
  • Yeah see I bled super super heavy for almost 2 months after my daughter. I can't imagine these absorbing what I went through. Just curious that's all. Thanks everyone!

  • I used the frozen padsicles, and they absorbed fine. I'm a super frequent pad changer to begin with (hate hate hate pads, only use tampons for periods) so it didn't bother me at all.

  • I used the pad-sicles... Sorta. I just bought pads and got them wet and froze them. I would then make sure to sit on a towel so as it defrosted it wouldn't soak the sofa. It was worth the work though because I was SOOOO sore from the episiotomy and tearing.
  • I made them and loved them! It is a trade off because they can't absorb much since they are already saturated, but the relief from the cool was worth the inconvenience for me. Also, I would take one out of the freezer 20+/- minutes before using it so that it was easier to open up and without tearing it apart. I used them during the day for 10 days or so.

  • My hospital showed me how to make these out of newborn sized diapers too which was awesome but they felt like diapers after a while because you put ice in them and then they got all wet diapers. Felt soooo good though.

This. They were so heavenly those first few days but after we left the hospital, I didn't make them at home. When I got home, I used a lot of tucks pads.

  • @ally3242‌ I don't think I made them at home either. The hospital had nice crushed ice and we didn't have an ice maker lol. Tucks pads and peri bottles to the rescue.

I didn't use these with either of my past pregnancies. I had stitches the first delivery and didn't have stitches with my second delivery. I honestly wasn't in that much pain with either... Or maybe I've just blocked it out!
I used the epi bottle, pat dry, and spray with dermaplast. That did the trick for me without a frozen pad up against my vag.

I'll be damned....4 kids and it never once dawned on me to put witch hazel in the peri bottle water, I just always used the little pads. Mind blown!!
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

I'm sure we did talk about this--maybe the first or second Stupid Question Sunday 2-3 weeks ago? I think the consensus was they feel great but don't absorb well. There were a few different methods listed to make them though.

  • Frozen pads in depends. Trust me on this. If you deliver vaginally you will not care about how lame you feel...that combo is wonderful. Also, a peri bottle to douse your vagina with water whenever you pee. I had an easy delivery, no tearing, recovered quickly....I still cried every time I peed. Everything is just raw.

i didn't do the padsicle but i hear the frozen ones help mostly with swelling that you have in the first few days before.

i got by on just tucks lined up on a pad, dermaplast and the peri bottle.

This is what I did as well.  Never used the padsicle.

  • We had frozen baby diapers in the hospital that I used for the first 2/3 days.  I didn't care how much they absorbed.  It was the only thing that made me feel better.  At a hospital I didn't much care about what a mess they made, but for anyone doing a home birth or going home from a birthing center, I'd absolutely recommend them.  Also, sitz bath (if I spelled that right.)

  • I didn't do it after my first delivery, but will definitely do it this time. It's funny because I remember conversations about it on my last BMB, but I never thought to do it. I had no tearing, but the swelling was pretty bad. I found a bunch of "recipes" for it on Pinterest.

@originalpenguin You are a genius. I will definitely be doing that as well.

    Loved the sitz bath!
  • As a FTM, these are all really helpful options. Thanks, guys! At least I know I can try witch hazel in the peri bottle if I hate the pads.

This is what I did too. I only used them at home a couple times; but when I did, I just sat on an old towel, and wore the mesh panties that I stole from the hospital when I was there. Super absorbent? No. Sweet relief for your lady bits? Yes.

For the day or two I did a small frozen pad on top of an overnight pad on top of depends. Glamorous? No. But it made me feel very comfortable.

On a related note - I highly recommend getting yourself a nice robe and some pretty pajamas for those first couple days. I did with my first baby and it helped me feel a little more like myself and a little less like a bloody mess/milk machine.

  • Peri bottle and tucks stored in the fridge are amazing. I was cut and tore and these two things definitely helped. The cold feels so good.Great idea about the witch hazel in the bottle. They gave me an ice pad right after delivery which was nice but never thought to make one myself. I will keep this in mind in case the cold tucks aren't enough.

  • I didn't need any. My hospital sent me home with huge amazing ice packs. I plan to see if I get them again before I decide to make my own.

Depends are so awesome for the first few days. They have fancy stretch fabric ones now. Great for when you're laying down because a pad can shift and these are 360 protection. Also, while we're in the awful truth of post delivery, get yourselves some glycerin suppositories. That first bm filled me with terror. My mom came back from the store with them and said "trust me, you will survive it". And thanks to those, I did.

  • The hospital I did my maternity clinicals in did something similar. The other nurses who had delivered there swore by them.
  • No padscicles here. I actually made them, but found that Dermoplast was more helpful, and  went through three cans. I also had Witch Hazel in a Peri bottle and kept it cold in a wine chiller. With a third degree tear, I didn't care how un-classy I looked with my wine chiller hanging in the restroom.
  • I had no ice packs at the hospital. Didn't think to use anything cold either. Though I might this time around. Though I might go really cheap and just sit on a pack of frozen peas.
