Trying to Get Pregnant

Pregnancy test

Good morning Ladies! I've been researching and researching and I can't find the answer to the following question: Is a pregnancy test still good even though it's been opened in the past? Do you have to use them as soon as you open them?

A brief intro... Don't want to be rude. My DH and I have been trying to conceive for a year. Ob prescribed clomid and that didn't work. Haven't really temped I may do that for next cycle if this cycle is a bust. Today is cycle day 11 and I took a pt however it had been opened and of course I got a BFN...

Re: Pregnancy test

  • Why did you take a HPT on CD 11? I assume you mean 11 DPO?

Either way, no, I believe they are invalid if they're opened. They come sealed for a reason.

    So much wrong.

First off, you should not be taking clomid from an OB. Ever.

Why the hell would you take a pregnancy test on CD11? That doesn't even make sense unless you have absolutely no idea how cycles work.

Cycle day 11 seems way too early to be taking a test. Most people do not even ovulate til cycle day 14 and then it takes time for the HCG to show up in your system.

    Go read the newbie blog.

Edit - I see now where you changed to 11 DPO. I still suggest the Newbie blog and there is a book that a lot of ladies recommend.

I wouldn't trust an opened one, sorry.

I'm starting to feel AF coming :( I hope not but I'm not going to get myself too hopeful
  • Please, for the love of all things holy, run away from the OB prescribing you Clomid. That is heavy duty stuff and requires monitoring while you take it, something OB's are not qualified to do.

This was when I first started having problems conceiving. I had no clue about infertility now I consider myself a little bit more educated but there's a lot more I can learn.

Hello.  If you have been trying to get pregnant for over one year, please see a RE (reproductive endocrinologist).  Do not take fertility medications from an OB, because they do not do proper monitoring to prevent you from over-responding to them or prevent you from hurting your reproductive health.  A RE will do this for you.

If opening the package to each HPT did not invalidate them, they would not come individually wrapped.

As other people said, check out our Newbie Blog linked at the top of the page.  It's a great TTC resource and you may find that there is a lot about your body that you didn't know!  Another great resource, especially for the charting you are considering, is FertilityFriend.

If, however, you do end up with a positive pregnancy test in the next few days, please don't update us and definitely do not post a picture of your pregnancy test.  This is more appropriate for the First Trimester or August Birth Month Club boards.  Another site you can post your pregnancy test for input is CanYouSeeALine.

All in all, good luck!  Welcome to TTGP.

    Thank you so much!!!

Thanks I will definitely check it out
  • This is info on one of the cheapie strips. I couldn't find info on Clearblue or FRER but it looks like they recommended "immediate" use. The chemicals in the HPT, when exposed to air for too long, are not accurate.

    DIRECTIONS FOR USE

    1. Allow specimen and test strip to
reach room temperature (20° to 30°C) prior to testing.

    2. Remove the test strip from the sealed foil pouch (test strip
must be used within 10 minutes of opening package).

    3. Hold the test strip at the top in a vertical position with
the arrows pointing downward. Lower the test strip into the urine
specimen. Do not immerse the test strip beyond the "Stop
    Line". (See illustration.)

    4. Leave the test strip immersed until saturated, approximately
20 seconds. (Never put more than one test strip into urine at
    the same time.)

    5. Remove the test strip from the sample.

    6. Set aside for about one minute.

    7. Read the result.

Thank you so much! That is really helpful! I will have to buy some new ones! I've been trying to test after I miss my period which is due in 2 days... FX that it doesn't
