Accidents

The following two things have happened in the past 3 days:

1. My husband didn't fully click the carseat into the stroller base and IT TUMBLED OFF AND FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN and landed on the pavement that way with the baby inside. Miraculously, we turned over the seat and there wasn't a scratch on him, and I'm not sure he would have even cried if I hadn't been all over him checking him out.

2. The newly crawling baby faceplanted HARD nose first onto a metal clawfoot table leg, resulting in a screaming nosebleed. I swore I saw cartilege in his nose after, so we took him to urgent care where they found nothing but boogers, thank god.

Anyone else have any near misses to share? I think I've aged 5 years in the past few days.

Re: Accidents

  • The glider....it was my best friend until he started pulling up. Now he tries to pull up on it and it starts rocking backwards. I know he's gonna crack his face on it before it's over!

  • Yikes, I would have freaked out, too.
I had a stroller incident a few weeks ago. I set up the stroller and snapped one of the twins into it in her carseat then went to get my other baby. Apparently I didn't have get the stroller all the way open and locked into position because it collapsed when I stepped away. Baby and I were both startled, but luckily she was fine. It only collapsed partway due to the car seat being snapped in and she was still fully buckled from the car ride. I felt like mom of the year for sure, though. :(

  • We have a nice scrape on her forehead from trying, and failing to climb the stove.
  • I was organizing some things in LO's room and put him on the floor to play with a pillow behind him in case he toppled over. Didn't he fall sideways and smash his head against the crib! He had a small welt by didn't cry at all, I was definitely more traumatized.

Last week the dog got close to LO and he grabbed a handful of fur. The dog whipped around and nipped at him, but thankfully she missed!
  • I was putting laundry away yesterday and put chase on the floor in my room. First he started eating my boyfriends shoe (gross) before I noticed then he hit his head on the side of the closet. He had a welt for thanksgiving :(
  • LO's new favorite activity is pulling up on the kitchen table chairs. It is so stressful!

  • While setting up the Christmas tree LO pulled our Christmas tree right down on top of him! while I went to grab the rest of the decorations from the basement. I was gone maybe 1 minute or less and I heard a loud BANG!! I freaked out and ran up the stairs to see him just sitting under the space between the stand and the branches happy as a clam tearing off as many lights and bulbs he could get his hands on!
This stage is so hard while they master crawling, walking, running and testing their newly learned skills. I remember wanting to wrap my first in bubble wrap!
  • One more -DH dropped an Xbox controller on one of the girl's faces. I don't know exactly what happened. I think it was folded in a blanket and she was on the floor by the couch when he moved the blanket and it tumbled out. She was sad but DH felt ten times worse. She had a bump for a day or two.

  • Yesterday my 2 yr old fell down from the top of the stairs. We were headed down after nursing my 7 month old. He sat down at the top so he could slide down like usual. As he was getting positioned he was too close to the edge and down he went, toppling and somersaulting. Thankfully he wasn't hurt just scared!!
  • Cora was pulling up on the table and her feet slipped out from under her and she knocked her head on the table. And earlier that day she managed to pull my (cold) coffee off the table onto herself. Thankfully she didn't get to it while it was still hot, and now I know she can reach the middle of the coffee table.
  • Liam fell off of the couch the other week. He was sitting in the corner while big brother was reading to him (clearly not paying attention) and DH was in the same room (obviously not paying attention either!) and Liam fell right off.

He calmed down really quickly (I was pretty shaken by it) but needless to say, big bro won't be "watching" Liam anywhere besides the floor.

  • LO got a shiner from pulling up on one of those suitcase stands in the hotel room.  I told him he adventured too far, too fast.  He raspberried me in return.

  • I need to baby proof... I have all hardwood floors except for a couple throw rugs. So falls won't be padded.

I need to secure the gate at the top of the stairs better and plug outlets.

LO started playing with herboombox power cord yesterday. Why is it things like that are more interesting then the miriade of baby toys available?

Also I bedshare and for the first time ever LO got close to the edge of the bed! DH is the block on that side and had left for work.
  • She's occasionally fallen over while sitting and bumped her head on a nearby toy. Nothing bigger than that but OMG YOU GUYS ARE SCARING ME. She isn't crawling yet but I have no baby proofing and all hardwoods.

  • When he was smaller he fell out of his (low) swing and a month ago he fell out of our very high bed which is one reason I'm transitioning him from bedsharing :((
  • Last Friday my husband went to put LO on his shoulders and put LOs head in the fan. LO didn't even cry and then on Sunday at my husbands grandparents house he did it again they have super low ceilings. So in two days his head was put in the fan by my husband.. He is perfectly fan didn't even have a mark on him..
  • All of these are from DS1 since DS2 isn't mobile just yet. Last Christmas I forgot I had turned on our gas fireplace and he put his whole hand right on the glass. He had a second degree burn that pretty much covered his whole hand. The blister covered about half of his palm. Luckily it healed really well and he didn't have any trouble with it.

This Memorial Day he fell down our entire flight of stairs. We were about 5 seconds from leaving to go camping and we had the gate opened to take stuff to the car. Luckily he was fine, just scared.

And not too long ago, he pulled his 6-drawer dresser down on top of himself! We had rearranged the furniture in his room and DH forgot to install the furniture strap for the dresser. I thought he had done it until this happened. DS was in he room for his nap and was playing with the dresser and over it went. We got lucky again and DH heard it fall and got to him quickly, and the dresser had fallen onto a small chair so the full weight didn't fall onto the kiddo. He was fine just bruised and scared. DH was in trouble for not doing the wall strap like he should have, and it got fixed that day!

  • Reading all this is making me feel panic-y!! :-O
  • DD isn't mobile yet so we haven't had any incidents with her yet, but DS was sprinting through my BIL's house on Thanksgiving.  He tripped and cracked the side of his head on the squared off metal leg of a little table in their sun room.  He had a goose egg that we iced, but, was fine once he had told the entire family about his wound.

  • These are comforting me and scaring me at the same time. Things happen so FAST! But I guess their flexible little bodies are pretty resilient. I need an accident break for a while, though.
  • Its scaring me too. We have a metal furnace looking fireplace thing that doesn't work but is not movable and I'm terrified its going to be the cause of an ER trip. But I have no clue how to baby proof it.

  • DS has fallen back and cracked his head on the hardwood a few times and also face planted and got a bloody lip. DD on the other hand... Pulled a little dresser in the bathroom on to herself when she was about one - the only piece if furniture in the house that wasn't secured of course. Glass sitting on top shattered around her and the corner cracked her in the forehead. She was fine.

She also fell out of her high chair face first at about the same age! DH and I replaced the tray differently - I always secured it immediately, but I guess he just put it back on. I put her in without removing it and didn't realize it wasn't secured. I walked away and heard a big crash and scream. I had to tell daycare to keep a close eye on her bc of it and definitely got the parent-of-the-year look.
  • Not so much an accident as a "it looks like I abuse my kid" thing. Clearly I waited too long between nail cuttings and his nails were way longer than I thought, because in the bath tonight Max started clawing at his stomach (for no reason? What a weirdo) and drew blood! I was putting his pajamas on afterwards and saw he's now covered neck to knees in scratch marks! I made sure to cut the damn things before bed.

  • When Harley was maybe 4 months, her dad hit her in the head with a car door. Just today, she banged her head against his twice, and smacked her head on the wall. And her dad went to pick her up, a drawer was open, and he got the back of her head on the corner...hard. she has two knots on her head.

When she was about three months old, I hit her head against the washer. That same week, I was putting her down on her playmatt and the dog jumped on me, I lost my balance and she hit her head on our kitchen floor.

    Parents of the year!
  • I've whacked my kid in the head with the car door multiple times, now that she's 3 and always attached to my person.

  • I was walking through a doorway and turned a little to see something and when I did I banged her little head on the door frame. She looked at me like, why did you do that? And then the crying started. I guess it was the delayed pain of bumping your head. No marks though. Poor baby!

  • I turned a corner too fast when Aiden was three months old, and caught his leg on the corner of the wall and scraped it pretty hard - took a few layers of skin off. Poor peanut cried his little eyes out for about 30 seconds, I just wanted to die I felt so bad.

  • I've got another one- back in the summer I put LO on a blanket in the yard to play. Our dog was running around playing with a ball and ran right over LO, stepping on his head. Poor little guy cried and had a mark for a couple of days. :(
