I had my RE consult today. We went over all of my test results, and DH's SA results. It went well, but I don't really know how I feel about it.

My Dr suggested our game plan be 3 IUI's with Clomid, and if those don't work our only option from there would be IVF. He said he understands that the procedure is expensive (all OOP), and that's why he only wants us to try 3. If it doesn't work by then, it' probably won't (His words, not mine). 

I feel kind of sad after going today. I  H A T E the way Clomid makes me feel, and I can't take Letrozole (it gives me throat ulcers), so I'm conflicted. I also know that DH and I cannot afford to do IVF, and don't know if we want to either. The RE said because of my low AMH I would need more meds/stronger meds to stimulate my ovaries to produce the best eggs possible ($5500 worth, rather than the typical $3200 at their practice). He said that the price would be anywhere from $13,000- $15,000. 

 His final words to me were "If we were talking about any other 29 year old I could almost guarantee that IVF would work, but I cannot and will not make that promise to you".

    ((HUGS))  I wouldn't know how to feel either.  I wish he could give you better news and more reassurances but I'm glad he's not sugarcoating things.  I really hope you won't need more than one cycle of IUI.  Just curious, is that price for IVF or the three IUIs plus meds?

    I'm sorry you got not so promising news, so many (((hugs)))

    Me 34 DH 31, Together since 2003, Married August 20, 2011,  TTC since May 2013
    BFP #1 August 24, 2013! MMC discovered Oct. 3, 2013, D&C Oct. 4, 2013
    BFP #2 December 17, 2013! MMC discovered Jan. 28, 2014, D&C Jan. 30, 2014
    Testing done: male with complete Trisomy 16, not hereditary. Tested me for clotting disorders, all normal.
    Feb. 2014 all clear again to TTC!  Will start progesterone supplementation with the next BFP just in case.       Oct. 2014 more testing just because, thyroid and autoimmune panels = normal.  Diagnostic U/S = no abnormalities.  Will keep trying for 3-6 more months, doctor still optimistic!

    BFP #3 December 11, 2014!  Beta #1 14DPO = 122.4 Beta #2 17DPO = 296.8 Please stick little one and be our Rainbow!

    The price is 1 IVF with meds. The IUI's are $500 + Meds.

    I'm sorry you didn't get better news from the appt. I have read that about 3 IUIs. I hope you and YH can find a plan you're comfortable with (((hugs)))

    Current plan: IVF with PGD. Antagonist - Vivelle Protocal. Stim start 12/1. ER 12/14.

    I didn't ask about injects, but I did tell him how much I hate clomid.  Honestly I can only do 2 more cycles on clomid (6 lifetime max?). I know that I don't have coverage for the injectable meds (I'm like 90% sure that I don't anyway....)  Petra, thank you for all the good advice! I am going to call them tomorrow.

    Hey, I am so sorry. I know that sucks. 

    With regards to the injects, there are several discount programs for OOP. Go to the resolve website and look under the making family building options then go down to making treatment affordable. Also, if your RE has a website, there should be some links to discount pharmacy programs for injects. You can get up to 75% on some of them. I will have to go look for the names of the programs and get back with you.

    I'm in the same camp as @PetraStonegirl advising maybe asking about injects. I know exactly what you mean about feeling awful on Clomid, so maybe a small dose of follistim would help?

    ((hugs)) sweetie, this is exactly how I felt back in April.  Give yourself and DH some time to process everything, it is A LOT to take in.  I second PP about asking about injectables.  They will be more (sometimes a lot more) than clomid but there are some programs out there and your doc might have coupons too.  Call fertility pharmacy too and see if they know of any deals.

    As far as IVF goes, remember how grim everything looked for me before my egg retrieval?  My AMH is terrible (.20) and they retrieved NINE eggs!  7 mature and 7 fertilized.  Even though we don't know the outcome of my popsicle embryos yet, we were all pleased with the number we got.

    I'm slightly annoyed about his comment about "any other 29 year old that IVF would work".  The bottom line is that for any woman (statistics vary from clinic to clinic) the success rate is only 55%.  So I don't like that he made it sound like IVF success is a given for some people, because it's not.

    I'm here for you if you want to talk more over PM, our situations are so similar.  We took out a loan from my parents to pay for all of this.

    ((HUGS)) While its nice to have an honest opinion, did he discuss options for donated meds? My clinic has a stash from other patients that they will give people who are OOP?  Most are injects and trigger shots.

    (((Hugs))).  That is a lot to digest.  I am sorry it was not the best of news, but I am glad he is being straight forward with you.  There is nothing worse than being bull-shitted by your doctor.

    I was thinking along the same lines as Petra in regard to IUI with injectables.
    I really didn't have any side effects on follistim.
    Also, my REs office gave me a coupon for thefollistim, in addition to free samples when available. (Doesn't hurt to ask)

    ((Hugs)) I'm sorry the news wasn't better. I'm also 100% OOP and our plan is also 3 Clomid IUIs then IVF. My RE did tell me about discounts for injectables and donated meds which might help? Sounds like everyone has already given good advice but I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

    Big ((((HUGS)))) love.  I would feel a bit disappointed too.  I'm sorry that you can't take Letrozole, as that effects me much less than Clomid.  I echo PPs about asking about doing injectables and IUI?  I have no advice on the cost, but they would definitely give you more follies to play with.

    oh, I am really sorry to hear your news. I know how frustrating that is but I agree with the others to take some time to discuss and to do your homework on injectibles and the costs. Here are a few pharmacies that may be able to help with the cost: https://www.sharedjourney.com/phar.html. Definitely ask your doctor for coupons. They were able to get us coupons for my Clomid and Ovidrel shots.
