Placenta Previa...13 w today

Sigh… I was admitted to the ER this past Friday for some serious bleeding. It was concluded that I have Placenta Previa and I'm on pelvic rest with no lifting, carrying etc.… I have a 15-month-old… I'm a stay at home mom… Quite nervous here! I'm still spotting but have a follow up Wednesday morning. Anyone else experienced this?? I have read that there's a good chance the placenta will move to the correct location but I'd love to hear from you.....

Re: Placenta Previa...13 w today

  • No experience with it, but my H's sister had placenta previa with her first baby (that did not correct) and she had a scheduled C-section I think like 3 or 4 weeks before her due date. Both her and the baby were/are healthy and normal, and there weren't any additional complications directly related to the placenta previa that I'm aware of.

  • I had placenta previa with my daughter. I had many episodes of bleeding and was put on bed rest. At 34 weeks I felt something wasn't right and went in to the ER. While waiting for the ultrasound tech suddenly I started gushing blood. My placenta had ruptured. I was taken in for an emergency c-section and had a 5 pound baby. She is perfectly fine today and you would never know all of the trouble I had. My advice is to take it easy. I did not follow the bed rest on the day it ruptured because it was my birthday. Then I ended up having the baby on my birthday! It was scary but everything ended up ok. Good luck to you! Hope it moves up for you, my friend's placenta moved at 34 weeks and she had a natural birth. I am now 13 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and praying I don't have placenta previa again.
  • FTM here who hasn't dealt with this but I was literally JUST talking about this yesterday with a friend who had her baby on Thanksgiving. Her placenta moved into the proper location by the time she was ready to deliver (no idea at what point it shifted though). At 13w, there is still a lot of time left in the ballgame so I wouldn't worry about it quite yet (easier said than done, right?)

Still - it must be so stressful to be on rest and have a baby to take care of. Do you have anyone around who can help you with LO? Take it as easy as you can and please don't stress about being "lazy mommy" for the foreseeable future (another Bumpie had to scale back when she was dealing with her depression and I remember she had a lot of guilt about it). We're here for you and I bet lots of STM+ have great ideas for activities with LO that will allow you to rest your body as needed.

Keep us posted - FX for good news on Wednesday!
  • I have a placental preva. The doctor told me it will move to the right place during the second trimester! FX that, that happens to you too!

  • You are all so great!! I needed all of this, thank you!! I'm trying not to feel guilty about being "lazy".. Thankfully my son is napping now and I have my feet up! I usually work out everyday and have play dates and leave the house doing everything/anything and I'm about to go nuts and it's only 1pm. Checking on here is a nice reminder that keeping baby safe is now my priority!! I'll stay positive!!
  • Not personally, but one of my best friends had it with her first.  Pelvic rest until 16 weeks when it moved.  Then my SIL had it.  I don't think it moved quite as early, but it did move prior to delivery. (I'm pretty sure she was on pelvic rest her entire pregnancy)

  • I had it with my son, it was discovered at my 20 week ultrasound and I was put on pelvic rest and had lifting restrictions. They said it happened because my pregnancies were so close (my daughter was 17 months when my son was born). Thankfully it corrected itself at 33 weeks but then I went on to have irritable uterus and was put on bed rest till I delivered.
  • I had it too, discovered at the beginning of my second trimester, but it corrected itself by the third. You still have a ton of time!

  • I just found out I have it too, and I'm 14 weeks on Wednesday. It's scary, but they seem to have hope that it's going to fix itself since it was discovered so early!
  • No experience with it, just passing through to send you good thoughts. FX for you that your are able to rest enough with a LO running around :)
  • My sister had a full previa. Hers didn't move. She did have a couple of hospital stays before my niece was born due to some cramping and bleeding, and then a scheduled c section at 37 weeks. The plus side was that she got to have an ultrasound at just about every visit to check on baby.

A friend of mine also had previa, but hers was only partial. After a few weeks of pelvic rest it moved on its own and she was fine.

In most cases it moves, and if not then you'll receive a c section because it would be unsafe to deliver vaginally.

I really hope yours moves!! Big prayers for you!!
  • posted this on the other placenta previa post..

  • I was diagnosed with placenta previa at either my first ultra sound or my 20 week ultra sound with my first pregnancy.  They kept an eye on it and had to have maybe 1 extra ultra sound to keep an eye on it.  Like your doctor told you mine moved and was completely fine by my 37 week ultra sound.  I wouldn't worry too much, at least not now, and even when the time comes, there is so much they can do to make sure you and the baby are safe.

  • I think I might have this but my doctor isn't concerned about it since it's so early. He mentioned in my 12 week appointment that my placenta is in the wrong place and that it would be a concern if it stays there later in pregnancy. Then he said most placentas move to a normal position as you get further along. I haven't had any bleeding though. I'm sorry you are going through this.

  • For educational purposes: placenta previa is when the placenta covers the cervix or the opening where the baby will be born. I had a complete previa caught at 20 weeks with my 3rd pregnancy. Mine did not shift and baby was born healthy by c section at 37 weeks. Most do shift especially with such an early catch. I had two friends with partials that delivered the same time as me and theirs moved. Give it time, try to not freak out and having tv for toddler until you stop spotting is ok. Best thing to do is try not stressing out and take it easy. Feel free to ask any questions you have and message me if you want. It's totally doable and don't read Dr. Google!!! Not helpful.
  • Thank you, all!!! Anyone know someone who had bleeding!? That's what sent me to the ER. Seems like women whose placentas correct themselves didn't have symptoms... I'm trying to be positive but am still slightly spotting and it's all I think about. Trying to remember we only get what we can handle...!!

I'm 12 weeks 5 days and having the same problem. I had bleeding 3 times since Thursday. To say it's scary is an understatement. So happy to see that I'm not alone. I went for an ultrasound yesterday and was relieved to hear that the baby was fine. The doctor told me that hopefully within 3 weeks the placenta should shift and the bleeding should stop. Hoping it does! Thanks everyone for sharing.
  • My SIL had this with bleeding at 13 weeks. She had an ultrasound today and it fixed itself... No scheduled C Section required :)
  • I had spotting and was in er a few weeks ago. I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hemorrhage. I went today for my ultrasound to check size of SCH and was advised that I have placenta previa. My ob said they will know more at my next appointment but if it's just partial it has a good chance of moving up as the uterus stretches. If it is considered complete placenta previa chances of it moving are slim. Hope it moves for all of us. This is my first pregnancy and I'm already really nervous so this isn't helping much.
  • Plus one guys. I had a massive SCH last Tuesday that had me rushed to the ER by ambulance because I was losing so much blood. I thought there was no way that the baby was still there but he is!! My OB said the same thing--looks like previa but will most likely move. That definitely may have contributed to the bleeding. Really hoping it does fix itself; I am terrified of needing a c-section
