Question about 2nd Opinions

I'm still optimistic that my IUI worked (beta is 12/5 and I'm holding off on POASing for a few more days) but if I get a BFN, I am finally ready to go get a second opinion. Thanks to the other threads on this topic for finally pushing me to this decision!

For those that have gotten a second opinion, how did you detail your past cycles? Did you get your current RE to send your file over? Or did you try and remember? I don't have all the specifics of my dosages, etc. written down, but I know the basics.

I had a fairly testy phone call with my RE earlier this month when I expressed concern over proceeding with this cycle when my AFC was less than in Sept. and he acted hurt that I didn't have faith in him/the practice and almost dared me to go elsewhere. So I'd rather not let my current RE know that I'm going for a second opinion, if I decide to stay with him/the practice. FWIW I'm also considering switching to another RE in the practice, but that might be really awkward.

I appreciate any advice!

Re: Question about 2nd Opinions

  • Hey @Carol77B!

Maybe you saw this, but I recently posted a thread that may have some helpful comments on it for you as well: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12492994/please-advise-how-to-manage-second-opinion-appt#latest

I was in my RE's office last week, so I requested our records in person (you have to sign for them, and DH too).  I filled out the form to have the records released to me rather than a particular office. That way, I can fax them or reproduce them as I want to. The secretary said that they will send a complete medical record to me via mail. I told her I had an appointment this week and she said that she'd give me "what I needed" that day. So, she gave me copies of our initial testing and our three cycle sheet summaries. This totaled about 40 pages. I faxed it over to the second opinion office and will bring my copy too.

    I hope this helps!

  • SG will email you your records. Mine cost like $85, but my husbands were like $2. Here's the link: https://www.shadygrovefertility.com/sites/default/files/Medical-Records-10-14.pdf
    Me: 34 | He: 40
    TTC since 08/2012

  • ronniesgirl1981 you've made me so happy with that link! There's no reason for my RE to get involved or even know that I've requested them. And I can always say that I want them for tax purposes, too, lol! Of course, FX that I won't need them, but so glad it's so painless for me to.

I requested my records so that I would have copies for my personal file. I also always keep my own notes during each cycle. Sometimes you capture things on your own that the records don't & it's helpful.

I have also switched doctors within the same clinic & they were very professional about it. Apparently, it happens often.

Don't feel bad about the doctor's ego. Let him rage on. My first RE was the director of the clinic & told me that the results I had with him on my first cye were the best results I was going to get. He told me that changing protocols/meds would do nothing. I ran for the hills & obviously he was wrong! GL with your second opinion. It stinks starting over somewhere else all over again but sometimes it really is necessary! (((HUGS)))

  • You can also say you want the records to share with your family physician. That being said, your RE should be understanding about your desire for a second opinion - my understand is they are pretty common in this field. If your RE is weird about it, that may be a sign you should consider looking elsewhere.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).
