Can't call my OB

i just tried to call my OB (heartburn, nothing life threatening) and there is a recording saying his number is out of service. I double checked the number on the website, I didn't dial incorrectly. I sent an email and haven't heard anything. In my hormone riddled crazy mind he ran off to Tahiti and now my baby is going to be delivered by a stranger who probably only just barely graduated med school and still has acne.

Re: Can't call my OB

  • I wonder if someone just accidentally forgot to pay the phone bill. But that's kind of nerve wracking. I would give it a couple days and try again.

  • You're not close to your due date so why would you jump to that conclusion? I'm sure it was some kind of mistake. Don't stress out about it and get the new number at your next appointment.

  • My OB office has had phone issues since the first day I've been there. Often times I get a message saying the number is disconnected or the after hours message never comes on so I can't get a call back. Since it's just for heartburn I would say call in the morning. Tell them their phones don't work. You can take tums.
  • That's strange! It could be work on the phone kind or something and it's just out temporarily. I would try back tomorrow and see if you can figure anything out.

But if it makes you feel any better I'm sure your hospital has your doctors personal numbers if he would in fact be called for your delivery. It's really common for women to be delivered by whatever doctor is on call and not the doctor they have been seeing. I couldn't tell you the name if the doctor that delivered DS. They just sent in the OB that was there at the time.

  • Maybe the after hours number is just messing up. Mention it at your next appointment. I understand your mind jumping to that place, because being the neurotic person I am, that's where my mind goes too. Just remember that WORST CASE scenario, just go to the ER or an after hours clinic & they will take care of you. Hope your heartburn improves. There are lots of threads on heartburn that you can look at in the meantime if you're looking for relief strategies.
  • Unless you are having a real emergency (and in that case you should go to the hospital anyway) I agree with PPs about asking at your next appointment. Maybe you can get the phone number of their on call/ backup dr if the phone issues persist, for piece of mind.

FX they read your email soon to put your mind at ease. I will always go chase down your OB in Tahiti if you need me to! ;)
  • If they have internet based phones, maybe the internet is down.

So glad you're back from Hiatus thinking the same thing.  Was vomitting dark green bile yesterday morning (Sorry for the TMI) and my little guy was having limited movement. I still waited for the office to open to call.  I feel weird calling after hours if im not bleeding all over the floor or my water is gushing out of me.  They clearly state emergencies and to me heartburn is just a monday morning for me.....

  • If your heart burn bothers you enough to call after hours, it's worth checking in on. I called 2 months ago because of severe heartburn that tums or anything else couldn't touch--my midwife had me go directly to the ER---It wasn't heartburn, it was chest pain--and I was diagnosed with a PE (blood clot in my lung) and admitted for 2 days. Everyday I'm thankful that I called. This is not to scare you--really.
You know your body better than anyone else...and you and your baby are worth taking care of.
If you can't get ahold of your OB, try your primary care, or an urgent care clinic if you want to avoid the ER. And get a back up number at your next appointment.
