Lower back pain while laying down in bed

By now we are all rolling into the 3rd tri, and dealing with all the applicable pregnancy symptoms.  This isn't the first time I've complained about lower back pain (and I know I am not alone) but I was wondering if anyone else has soreness, while laying in bed, that is so persistent that literally NO lying position eases the discomfort?  Seriously, this morning I woke up around 5am to an extremely sore back.  No sharp pain, nothing in my abdomen or pelvis, just true lower back dull aches... but the only way I could make it go away is to stand up and get out of the laying position (but I was definitely not ready to get up and start my day).  Luckily, it's not EVERY night/morning, but that almost makes it more puzzling.

It hasn't been debilitating, or worrying, enough for for me to call the nurse hotline, so of course I'm turning to TB for any input.  Just seems so silly (aka fu*king annoying) to me that a pregnant lady can't even be comfortable LAYING DOWN.

Re: Lower back pain while laying down in bed

  • I am seriously not comfortable no matter how I am lying, sitting, standing.  My lower back is killing me at all times.

    Heating pad, tylenol, more water!

Ok this is probably gonna come out wrong... but have you tried going on your hands and knees on the floor and 'swivelling' your pelvis quite gently from left to right like a dog slowly wagging it's tail, for about 3-5 minutes? This has helped me a lot. But everyone has their own little movements that do the trick for exactly where the pain is. I don't know if you do yoga or some other kind of fitness, but if not, a prenatal yoga video on youtube might give you a few to try out?
I have not tried this position/swivelling, but I will now!  I haven't done any yoga while pregnant, but I have been getting in about an hour of low-impact cardio 4-5x/week (nothing I would guess would contribute to this pain, but I'll ask a ton of questions about my routines and what may be helping/hurting at my next appointment).  The only thing that consistently helps is a warm bath!    I need to check out youtube too as you mentioned.  I'm willing to try almost anything!
  • Everyone's perviously mentioned moves are definitely the right advice. I'd also add standing hip circles. They can release your lower back. Also... Sometimes before going to bed I need to be on all fours, with my hips up and my head/chest down (In yoga, puppy pose) before being able to get to sleep. My back will throb and throb and slowly release a little. I hope you get some relief! Our bodies are doing incredible work.
  • I'm feeling very much the same way, especially if I don't have my body pillow between my legs. Heating pad/warm bath has helped some, I'm not a huge fan of taking Tylenol unless I really really need it

  • This might be a given, but pillow under the knees doesn't help at all? I second cat/cow, I've been doing some reading lately and everyone suggests it.

  • That position on the floor helps sooo much! I too have back pain in bed, feels better when I get up or put another pillow between my legs. I feel like when she puts pressure on certain nerves the pain gets worse, so moving around helps. We're almost there!!!

Maybe hip circles or rocking while sitting on an exercise/yoga ball would help too? Also great as baby soother once LO is here. I am going to ask my yoga teacher about this today as I have been having hip issues while lying on my side too. I will report back if she has other ideas.
Rolling on my ball like that is the only thing other than PT and being on all 4s that helps me get the pressure off my back so I definitely 2nd this! I feel like the relief lasts longer when I spend the evening bouncing on my ball, too.

  • I get terrible pain in my shoulders from lying on my side. I see a chiro and stretch to help my lower back but nothing seems to help my poor shoulders!

Same. Laying flat on my back = pressure/pain from uterus, laying on my sides = hip pain that moves to my back.

I find "sitting" in bed aka leaning against high pillows feels decent, though I struggle to sleep that way.
This is how I've been sleeping for a few weeks now, and my butt always falls asleep. :( S doesn't like when I lie on my side, especially the left. Not too much longer!

  • I have no idea if this will help at all, but I've noticed lately that baby keeps wedging his way down into my pelvis, which is really uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Before going to bed, you can try getting down on all fours, and alternately arching your back up and down for a few seconds each (does that make sense?). This pulls the baby out of the lowest part of the pelvis and back up into your belly. It might help relieve some of that pain!

(This exercise was suggested by our childbirth class coach. I sometimes do this move in the middle of the day if he's getting really low.)
This is what I meant by cat/cow, I probably should have described it better like @willvilljill did :)

I also get a lot of relief from cat/cow. Once a week yoga for an hour has been enough to keep my back happy. Sadly it's on Tuesdays and on hold till we finish this series of birthing classes.

  • I feel your pain (pun intended). Like PP's have mentioned, I'm sleeping almost sitting up using my maternity pillow to prop myself up. Not the most comfortable but the only position that doesn't cause me hip/back pain. I am going to try the stretches mentioned to see if those help.

This. Oh and everything hurts. I'm in tears nightly.
  • I can relate, both being pregnant and not pregnant. I've had several knee surgeries where I've been non weight bearing & spent a significant amount of time in bed, with this exact issue. Now that I'm modified bed rest now, I deal with it pregnant. The ONLY thing that works for me is to be up. Sit up. Try to walk around, even for a short amount of time. Tylenol, water, and heating pad can only do so much in my instances of this kind of back pain.....
