Pregnant after 35

First pregnancy worries

Hi all,
I'm a first time mum to be @ 41, the universe was starting to worry me but after 3 years of active trying we finally had a successful IVF transfer :-)

I'm currently 5wks+3days and don't know whether I'm imagining RLP so early or it's really happening. Morning sickness has been present for the past 10 days though, not constant but every second day it's pretty ordinary..and my sense of smell! Wow, food courts are so totally out for me, sensory overload :-)

I had a bit of a scare on Friday night, went to the loo and on wiping, noticed a small thick, dark, mucousy discharge (sorry for the detailed information). Hubby is a nurse, and thinks a small piece of the mucous plus has dislodged (I had a section of my cervix removed when I was 16 due to a cone biopsy)... But is it too soon for this? Since then, there hasn't been anything similar, but a mild off-white mucous only when I wipe in the late afternoon/early afternoon.

I have a long history of emdometriosis, ovarian cysts and general gynaecological issues, and because of my age and medical history, we've decided not to tell our friend and family until after 13 weeks (though I really want to tell my mum and dad that they're finally going to be grandparents for Christmas).

My first scan is in 10 days, and I'm currently terrified to go to the loo...
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for reading/listening,
Kylie

Re: First pregnancy worries

  • Welcome and congrats!
I don't think that is RLP this early on. Or the mucus plug for that matter. BUT, I am not a nurse or Dr either.
RLP doesn't come until a bit later on. You are most likely just feeling the aches that comes along with being pregnant. I was crampy and achy with all my pregnancies at times in the beginning.
As for the mucus you spotted, I think that is normal too. I spotted and had a tad bit of mucus one wipe and it scared the beejesus out of me in my 2nd pregnancy (only because I had a mc in our first pregnancy). Then I noticed I would do this in each of the pregnancies at least one time.
    Hope this eases your mind!!

  • Hi Kylie :)  Congratulations and welcome to the board.

I had some pain/twinges on my lower right side before I found out I was pregnant.  I was planning on going to see my OB in case it was a cyst but it turned out I was pregnant.  I don't know if it was RLP or some other pain like implantation.  It started around ovulation and went on until around 7 weeks.  I mentioned it to my doctor at the first appointment and she didn't seem concerned.

As for discharge, I haven't had the exact experience, but I've had a lot more of the stuff since getting pregnant.

Sorry about the anxiety.  It gets better after the first scan.  Good luck!
  • My corpus luteum used to act up A LOT early on, and I also had some odd mucus in the second month. The rule of thumb is to report any concerning symptoms to your doctor but not to worry unless you're simultaneously cramping and seeing bright red blood.

The early weeks are tough! It does get better as time goes on. Hang in there!
  • It's normal to have brown spotting in those early weeks, and your body is stretching in places it never stretched before so cramping and RLP totally happen.  Unless you are having period type bright red bleeding, it's nothing to worry about and totally normal.  I'd suggest calling your insurance, many have a 24hour nurse line for maternity that you can call and they will be able to tell you if your symptoms are normal or not, as well as if they suggest you make an appointment or go to the ER.  I used mine a lot during my first pregnancy and it helped give me reassurance that everything was ok.

  • Welcome and congrats!!  The first trimester is so hard because you can't feel the baby moving to give you that reassurance.  I've had several early losses and a late loss at 20 weeks. Vaginal discharge can be crazy during pregnancy. The biggest thing you have to watch for is period type cramping and bright red bleeding.  Unless you're cramping badly and have bright red bleeding.. it's probably ok.  I know it's easier said than done not to worry. I've been where you are and was either terrified to use the restroom or constantly using the restroom to make sure I wasn't bleeding.  It can be rather stressful at times.  I would just communicate your concerns to your physician. Unfortunately, it's a lot of watchful waiting which I know can be really hard.

Good luck to you!  I hope all continues to go well!

And I totally told my parents at 5 weeks.  :)  my mom is the first person I called. My best friend was the second.  I actually called my best friend before my husband even knew!

  • niknak1208, I fb messaged my BFF a pic of the tester while I was waiting on hubs to respond to the same text of the tester. And I called my mom and mom n law that day. I think I was 4 or 5 weeks. I think it is ok to tell close loved ones early. Just that much more support behind you. :)

  • Thank you all so much for your responses and feedback! I really 'get' the whole notion of crazy pregnant lady now, I think I feel every emotion known to man in hourly increments... My poor hubby and stepkids, at least hubby knows why but the kids are probably wondering what the heck is going on!
  • With all my pregnancies I have had pulls tugs and twinges. The midwife told me it was just stretching and not everyone feels them. I always had ovulation pains so I wonder if that is why I notice them.
