High BP

hey everyone! I'm 18w and 5d today. Tomorrow is my anatomy scan :).

On Wednesday night I ended up making a trip to the ER because I was having some abdominal pain and my doc said just be safe. Everything turned out fine but they checked my blood pressure twice and it was very high like 153/85. Normally it's like 130/70 or 120/60. I'm not really knowledgable about BP so I was happy I was cleared for the pain and sent on my way...

Then my doc called me on Friday and said to come in early to see a midwife before my anatomy scan they are gonna check my BP to monitor it and I may start medication... I checked it today myself at stop and shop and it's still high 145/90.

I'm nervous. On November 12 my last appt it was completely normal - I'm baffled by how it could rise out of nowhere...

Is anyone else dealing with this? What have you been doing.. I just wanna ease my fears unfortunately I've been googling :(

Thanks everyone

Re: High BP

  • It's very possible your BP could be normal this week. Until it's read twice high, there's typically not much to worry about. That being said, if it is repeated high, it'll put you at increased risk for preeclampsia. It's something they'll monitor closely if you read high again. There's not much known about why it happens, or how to prevent it. So for now just relax and hope your next read is low and normal.

  • I had it with my last pregnancy but not until 28 weeks. Since it was that late, I ended up on bed rest without medication. I've had a couple of bouts this pregnancy but they were both during very high stress times so we are just keeping an eye on it as it has been great most of the time.

There are things you can do in general to help high bp like eating right, exercise, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated but those are long term things, it won't make it go down overnight. Lying on your left side will usually decrease your bp if it is pregnancy induced but at this early you might need medication anyway. I was already warned that it might come to that if my numbers are high again. I am to go in at anything 140/90 or above.

And just FYI: when taking your own bp at home or at a store you need to sit quietly and completely still for at least 5 minutes before taking the reading. Walking, talking, even things like checking email or texting can make your numbers go up and that wouldn't be reliable reading.

Try not to worry! Many women deal with the issue and although it's crummy everything is fine. My daughter was born at 38 weeks and is a happy and healthy 10 yr old.

    Good luck!
  • Mine was something like 160/80 at my last appt. My doctor said they would continue to monitor but weren't too worried because the low number was normal and when the top number is high it's usually due to stress. I haven't taken it since so I don't have much of a follow up yet.
  • So I have chronic high BP before pregnancy. It was around 160+/95+. The bottom number is typically what the doctor is mostly concerned with ore-pregnancy anyway. Shockingly, since getting pregnant, my BP has been completely normal u medicated. I had accidentally forgotten to refill my script and it stayed normal. Now my doc warned me that in the first and second trimester, this is normal. However, third trimester, it typically goes up to at or above pre-pregnancy levels. For me, that's those super high numbers above. I'm hoping that it isn't going to happen to me but we are going to monitor closely. At 28 weeks I'll start going to the doctor once a week and at 32 weeks I'll be there twice a week. Close monitoring is key. Medication is not the end of the world.

  • I would try not to worry. My high risk dr likes my BP to be 140/90. You weren't too much higher and neither time was an ideal time for taking BP. All my drs have told me at this point in pregnancy it's very unlikely actually pregnancy related. As far as I know I didn't have high bp before pregnancy. I found out about mine in the ER too. Since then I run about 170/115, so yeah, bad. We have upped my meds twice now, hoping this most recent time does the trick.

I am trying to take walks and eat better. I also stopped working (obviously that's not an option for everyone) and my Mom helps out with my daughter when I'm stressed out. I have a BP monitor and it really helps to check frequently. That way if it's high I know is time to take it easy.

  • Mine has been high at my last few appointments. I'm worried that it's going to be high still when I go back this week. I hope I don't have to be put on medication or bed rest.
  • Mine was high every time they checked when I was pg with ds. Always 140/90 and above, I normally have low blood pressure so it was high for me Andy doctor never seemed too worried . They never worried till it was at 160/115 at which point they induced my labour. 153/85 isn't that high. The lower number is the most important number and under 90 is normal if I remember correctly. So try not to stress over it just relax and take it easy :)
  • When I was 16 weeks at my appt over a month ago, the bottom number of my bp was 100. I was put on medication that keeps it regulated but my doctor does have concerns for my pregnancy as I get further along. I had high bp with my son but not until around 36 weeks. She ended up inducing me at 37 wks 6 days. She says we are shooting for 37 weeks with this boy! Really keep an eye on how your feeling and take it easy! I definitely know how you feel. Not fun at all!
  • Thank u everyone! :)
  • I had pregnancy hypertension (high BP) with my first 2 pregnancies.  I went on meds (Labetelol) at 11w with #1 and 8w with #2.

I did many 24 hour urine collections to watch for Pre-E (but it never became Pre-E - so that was good).

I saw the MFM clinic for growth ultrasounds every 4w after the anatomy scan to monitor baby's growth.  I also had 2x weekly Bio physical profile ultrasounds from week 32+ to check baby's health in the womb.

I was induced at 39w as part of the high BP protocol.  Safer out than in at that point b/c high BP can cause the placenta to crap out earlier than normal.

My kids were both healthy, I was fine, and went off BP meds by 6w post partum.

Monitoring is important to make sure your BP meds are working well, and to make sure the baby is doing well in there.

    Good luck!
