Molluscum contagiousum

Does anyone have experience with this? ***warning:gag worthy words included***

My youngest DD (10 months), has it. Her doctor diagnosed it as that a few months ago. It is a bump on her chest, kind of in between her nipples. It looks like a huge hard pimple. The doctor basically said to leave it unless it hurts or gets too big. The only treatment is to freeze it off, but they typically go away on their own after quite some time. She has had it for about 4 months now. It is supposed to be highly contagious but none of us have got them, including her sister who bathed with her (before diagnosis). It seems to be bigger and coming to a head now, almost like it could pop, but I don't want to mess with it and risk infection. I've encountered many different conditions working in a daycare, but I have never seen this before. I think I'm going to make another appointment just to see if it's still fine.

  • I think that's what's kind of confusing me. Why haven't any of us got it? Like I literally have been skin to skin with her and her sister bathed with her before we knew what it was. Do you know if it's just contagious when stuff comes out of it/it's picked at? Luckily, where it is located on her it is almost always covered and therefore she never touches it. It looks terrible.

  • My oldest DD had this, a few small ones on her cheek. They were there almost a year between ages 3 and 4 and then went away on their own. We haven't seen it again. Our pedi told us that it is more common to spread to kids or those with weak or compromised immune systems.
They don't pop so don't poke at it. I know with DD it bothered me more than it bothered her so I always tried to leave it alone.

  • DD had them in the back of her knee. We had to go to the derm and they put "bug juice" (apparently made from crushed beetles) on them. We had to go every 2-4 weeks. It was awful. It's been a couple of years no and no issues.

It's a bitch. I had it. While the bumps looked like they could pop, they never did. At least for me.

I also got them frozen off. It took a few rounds as I had unwittingly spread them, thinking it was razor burn for a while. :((

Same thing happened with me except mine were dug out. It fucking hurt and just the thought alone makes me want to barf.

  • I don't really know what to do. I'm leaning towards just leaving it be. At least if it's safe to do so and doesn't spread. Mostly because it doesn't seem to bother her, she is so little and it sounds like it could be pretty traumatic to remove.
  • DS has these. He got them from a friend.
From what I understand they only spread when 'open'. So if they do open or pop, be sure to put rubbing alcohol on them to prevent the spread.
They should go away on their own.
  • DS has this and has had it since summer. It's all over his torso. Our pedi said it will go away in 6 months to a year and she does not recommend burning it off unless they reallybstart to bother him, since the removal is very unpleasant.

  • My DD has these and the only thing that has turned up any results is braggs apple cider vinegar. I give her and bath and dab some on with a q tip. After a while they turn black/brown and fall off. She had quite a few on the left side of her torso and most are gone now.

  • If something has the potential to go away on it's own, I much rather do that then try a medicated cream of some sort.

WOW I'm with you @stebnie , I just looked at @jessjoinprofile and she has three posts since last year. Each about Molluscum Contagiousum and recommending that cream. Creepy!
