Re: So, Rock n Play moms

  • It was a lifesaver!! We had a pack n play too, but DD never really liked that. She slept in the rock n play until she was about 9 months. I definitely would recommend it; it's the first thing I recommend to anyone having a baby. Now they're fancier, vibrators and ability to rock themselves. I don't know about those features, we just had a plain one. The rock n play is a must have imo!

  • The Rock n Play saved my life. My son wouldn't sleep unless I held him upright on my chest all night with me sitting up, which caused swelling in my legs (and was obviously not the best for him safety wise, so I never really slept because I'd always be worried about him). The rnp helped him feel enclosed and safe and I got to sleep!

I used it all the time, and when he was old enough to sleep in the pack n play, I used the rnp to keep him in while I took showers. He used it until he was almost 2!

  • It was the best thing! We used ours a lot for the first 6 months.

We used ours until about 5 or 6 months. I think a lot of moms on my other BMB used it longer but DD was a big girl and outgrew the "infant" stuff quick. It was great. DD primarily slept in her swing but she took naps in it and it was nice and portable so we could take it on trips and take it up and down stairs easily. It was also nice when I was making dinner or had to use both hands because she could still see me and she also hated laying flat.

I wouldn't say it could replace a pack n play because they will outgrow it but it was definitely a useful product for us.

  • DD slept in it, she hung out in it when I was doing things around the house. It got her off the floor when I wasn't holding her which was good because I had little dogs who would trample her. Plus it's inclined so it helps with reflux.
  • My sister used it for my nephew to sleep in and he loved it! So did she until she needed him to sleep on a flatter surface, then they had a lot of sleepless nights while he transitioned. But who knows, every baby is different and not all have problems transitioning.
  • It was a life saver for us! DS slept in it until like 9 or 10 months. Transitioning to a crib was a little hard, but totally worth it. We just used a crib wedge at first to help him adjust. He had reflux too, and had to be propped up after he ate. It was nice being able to put him in there and get some work done. It's super portable so nice to take on trips. It also keeps them up higher off the ground than the pnp which I loved in the cold winter months. We're having twins this time, so definitely getting a second one too.

  • We used a cosleeper with DS so I don't have any personal experience. A lot of moms from my other BMB used them and loved them until the transition into the crib. I will not be using one for this LO unless we have major sleeping problems or reflux issues. If LO has no issues sleeping on their back I don't want to get them used to the recline of the rock n play.
  • We used it for the first 5 months. DD slept and napped in it. We never had a bassinet or a pnp. It is awesome because you can move it from room to room easily. I loved it!

  • Our DS had reflux and was a horrible sleeper, so we used it for the first 5 months until we moved him to his crib. I agree with PP that it's super handy to be able to move it from room to room, and take it with us to other people's houses. Honestly though, we won't be using it with this LO unless he/she also has a reflux issue. It was really tough to get DS to transition to sleeping on a flat surface once he was used to the incline...so we will be trying to get this one to sleep on a flat surface from the start. Wishful thinking?! :-/

  • @goglencoco‌ We used ours for night sleeping. The safety info just said once baby could pull themselves up, it wasn't safe anymore. As long as they are strapped in and not able to pull themselves out, it's perfectly safe to sleep in any time.

  • We used it every night for 7.5 months. DS would not sleep in the PnP. The transition to the crib was rough, but it was worth it for the 7 months we used it. DS was colicky and anything to get us through those early days was well worth the money. We actually ended up buying 3, one when we forgot it on a road trip and thought we could make due with a travel crib, and another to keep at my mom's house.

We had just the basic kind, no fancy features. No problem with flat head either. One concern is that some people on my old BMB found mold on the underside of the fabric, but it was because they didn't let it fully dry after washing it or put their baby in it with wet hair after a bath. We never had that problem.

Another benefit, I could rock it with my foot from bed when DS would half wake up in the middle of the night, it helped settle him back to sleep.

Ok question. My mom has a cradle that every baby in our family has slept in for 3 generations, so we will be using that for nighttime sleeping for the first few months! I was just going to get a $40 bouncer that vibrates and plays music to put the baby down during the day when I take showers, cook, etc. Is there a significant advantage to the rock'n'play? Is there any reason to get both a rock'n'play and a bouncer if you already have a night sleeping arrangment? When we're with my parents, they have corgis (very short legs), so we don't need the baby too far off the ground lol. In any case, I'm definitely trying to avoid buying a swing because we simply don't have the room in a tiny apartment.

  • I used a Rock and Play instead of a bassinet. I loved it it props the baby up since the back is a bit slanted. My pediatrician recommend it as well. My daughter is only 9 months old and just grew out of it since she now wants to try and climb out of everything but I will definitely be using it again for baby number two.
  • I loved my rock n play with DD she slept in it until about 7 months. Its portable and light. Absolute must!

A rock n play is, or at least was, marketed for sleeping. That is all we used it for, though I put DS in it while I showered or cooked. A bouncy seat isn't for sleep at all, just a place to set the baby, so they are different things. If you already have someplace for baby to sleep, you may not need a RNP.

  • I'm an advocate of not buying too much stuff in advance and my DS was like yours. He slept well flat in a pack n play and transitioned to crib fine so I'm going to not buy a rock n play at first and then if baby#2 has trouble sleeping flat then I'll buy one after he/she is born.

  • DS loved the RNP and slept in it by the bed for the first 4 months. Like others have said, it was a bit of a challenge to move to crib sleeping, but still worth it.

I will say that you should be cautious with the head positioning because if your baby tends to turn their head to one side consistently it can lead to flat head and torticollis (the head twists one way while the chin looks the opposite way) which then has to be treated with therapy. However, if you are careful to alternate head positions and do tummy time, etc., this shouldn't be a huge issue.

  • It was the best thing ever, the only thing my daughter would sleep in besides the swing.

We loved the rock n play with DS but I am hesitant to use it this time because DS did get torticollis and needed a helmet to fix his flat spot on his head. He ended up needing 9 months of PT.

  • Our son slept in the Rock and Play sleeper (no vibrations or anything) for 4 months. This thing is a lifesaver! The first 10 days before we had it, he really did not sleep in his flat, portable bassinet. He would fall asleep after nursing but then seem to be gagging trying to spit up once he was laid down flat in it. He really wasn't a big spit up baby either. None of us had any sleep until that rock and play! I think he also felt more secure in it since the sides sort of cradle baby.

Transition to crib was fine as he had gotten used to naps in the crib. We also had him sleep in the rock and play in his own room for a week or two before going to the crib.
  • RnP was the only place DD would sleep.  The transition to the crib at 5 months was rough, but I would not take back one wink of the sleep we got with it.  Once we moved upstairs after the first week or so, she was in it in her own room.

We travel a lot, and the RnP was super easy to take with us for her to sleep in a hotel room.  We got a pack and play as well for when she got bigger., and we also used it downstairs when she first came home for diaper changes, etc.  Since I had a c-section it was great to have that setup downstairs (with the RnP).  Both grandparents have PnP's for when we visit.

    Hope this helps.

  • I loved the RNP.  He slept in it pretty much exclusively until he was 4.5 months old.

That being said, I would absolutely try out non-inclined sleeping arrangements first because I feel like we got him used to it and after that he couldn't go back.

  • Our son slept in our room in the rock n play until we moved him to his crib in his own room.  He spit up a lot, so it was really helpful to have him laying a little more upright.  Plan on using it again in place of a bassinet.  Totally worth the price.  Also easy to move around the house as needed.  I imagine #2 will spend more time in it during the day so he/she doesn't get stepped on/tripped over by a toddler!
  • I hear from all my friends that the RNP is amazing, but it kind of makes me nervous.  Could it tip over easily, or requires a good amount of force?  I wonder  because I still have a 4 year old who climbs in our bed pretty often in the middle of the night, and a dog and cat who roam around the house.  I would love to get one since it is so small and portable, but I wonder how 'stable' it is?  My oldest STTN at three months, in her crib, in her own room.  My second child co-slept (bassinet, in our bed, crib in our bedroom) until he was 1.  This RNP is brand new to me  :-O

I would say it's pretty stable but if you're worried about it tipping over there are straps for the baby. My cats loved to perch on my bed and look at him in it but they never came close to touching it.  Can't speak for dogs or older kids.
  • Like some others have said, we won't be using one unless we try everything and it's the only thing that works.  They weren't around for my oldest but were for my younger two, and we did just fine without it.  If they wanted to be inclined a bit during the day, they were fine in a bouncer for a little bit.  I've heard too much about flat heads and trouble transitioning to laying flat and would rather not have to deal with those issues if we don't have to.
