Tongue tie

Hey ladies! My little man has a tongue tie which has made it difficult to breastfeed so I am exclusively pumping. We are meeting with a ENT this week to discuss clipping it mainly because of speech issues later. Wondering if anyone else has experience with this. He also has a lip tie but according to my pediatrician she isn't overly concerned with this and he just might need braces later on. I hear the procedure is pretty quick but I am of course nervous about it. Any insight would be very helpful about the procedure itself and the recovery. Thanks!

Re: Tongue tie

  • My daughter had tongue tie as well, and I've had a lot of trouble breastfeeding because of it. We saw the pediatrician and a lactation consultant twice, they recommended having the tongue tie clipped by an ENT also. We took her to the ENT and it was a quick procedure. She cried for a second, but was able to eat immediately after. She's had no complications since the procedure last week. I'm still having a lot of pain with breastfeeding, but it could be because her mouth is so small (she's still under 6lbs) or also because she's been bottle fed for the first 2 weeks of her life. Even if I can't breastfeed her, I'm glad we had the procedure done. It was simple, no after care to worry about and she never appeared to be in pain. Good luck to you & your baby!

  • We had the procedure as well. Very quick- they took him out of the room but by the time they returned about three minutes later he wasn't crying. We had it done because he was having trouble with his latch and due to the possibility of speech issues later. Breastfeeding went much better once it was done, but it did take us a little time to retrain him from exclusive bottle usage... Good luck!

  • DD is tongue tied. It's not affecting breastfeeding, so we're probably just going to leave it. DH is also tongue tied and it's never caused him any problems.

  • Our baby has a borderline tongue tie but shows no problems feeding so I chose not to clip it yet. Ive noticed more lately that she does seem to have difficulty putting her tongue over her lower lip so we might reconsider.

  • William had a tongue tie that we had clipped before we left the hospital. He didn't cry a bit. They tell me that it contributed to his poor latch, although it was only part of the whole myriad of problems we have had trying to breast feed.
  • Thanks everyone. This is very helpful.
  • My niece had it done early because of problems breastfeeding and still has problems with speech (2 yo now) likely because she also has a very high palate. My niece had no problems with the procedure and bf was much better afterwards.
