1)how old is baby?
2) how long is baby feeding?
3) does he/she take both breasts?
4) are you waking the baby to feed?

Re: Breast feeding report out...

  • 1) 7 weeks old
    2) baby will eat anywhere from 15-45 minutes
    3) typically will empty one breast and spend a little time on the second at each feeding
    4) I do NOT wake to feed but....
    5) she eats every 1.5-3 hours. I've had a couple of 4-5 hour night stretches but this is rare
    6) I just want to sleep!

  • 1)how old is baby? 1 month old
    2) how long is baby feeding? 20-25 minutes per session on average
    3) does he/she take both breasts? Yes, usually longer on the first
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? Yes every 2.5-3 during the day. I decided to let him go up to 4 overnight but that hasn't happened because he wakes after 3-3.5 hours
    5) how often do you feed? See above :) on demand so sometimes closer to 2 hours
    6) any challenges or other questions?? Just anxious for him to spread out some feedings especially overnight so I can get better sleep and start to pump

  • 1) 11 days old
    2) feeding anywhere from 3 minutes to generally 20 but we just had a 37 minute session!
    3) he has been doing well at eating at both sides.
    4) the first few days I'd definitely wake, or try to wake him if we hit the 3 hour mark but he has steadily been gaining weight, feeding pretty regularly on demand, and producing plenty of dirty diapers, and tends to wake on his own within 3-4 hours so we let him sleep.
    5) feeding on demand.
    6) a little worried his latch might not be great because he gets the hiccups after feeding and that my diet might be giving him gas :( But it only hurts for a little but when he latches on and then feels fine so... maybe he is just prone to hiccups and gas?

    1)how old is baby?
    3 weeks on Tuesday

    2) how long is baby feeding?
    Between 10-20 minutes

    3) does he/she take both breasts?
I just started the burp & switch. Oops, didn't know that was a thing until a few days ago. Burping in between is essential for us.

    4) are you waking the baby to feed?
Not anymore but we were at night after 3 and a half hours. She always fell asleep on my boob too soon. Now she wakes on her own, and feeding on demand is surprisingly less stressful than doing it by my phone alarm.

    5) how often do you feed?
Last two nights it was almost every hour, sometimes 2. Usually we push it to 3 hours.

    6) any challenges or other questions??
I don't get pumping at all. I do it at random. I don't feel like doing it on a schedule. What do other moms do?

*ed because I have another question, lately she has been popping off my left side. An LC said I was kinda flat on that side and she was borderline tongue tied--I think that's why.
My questions are: a. Can tongue tie become a worse problem over time (she never had latching issues before and actually preferred that side in the hospital) and b. What are the downsides of frenulum clipping?

    BABY GIRL, 11-11-14

  • I should have worded not clearly-curious how long people nurse on each side? Ex if your answer is 20 minutes is that total or 20 on each side for a total of 40?
  • 1)how old is baby?
She will be one month on Tuesday

    2) how long is baby feeding?
Typically 20 minutes on each side. 40 min total.

    3) does he/she take both breasts?
    Yes

    4) are you waking the baby to feed?
    Nope

    5) how often do you feed?
Every 2-3 hours. I have had a couple of 4 hour stretches but those are rare.

  • @carabella I have the same concerns. She hiccups ALL the time and seems so gassy. I'm giving an LC a call tomorrow to see if I can get in to see her for piece of mind.

  • 1)how old is baby? 1 week
    2) how long is baby feeding? 5-20 minutes
    3) does he/she take both breasts? If she's still awake after a burp we'll switch to the other side
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? Yes
    5) how often do you feed? Every 2-3 in the day and every 3 or so at night.
    6) any challenges or other questions?? My challenges seem to be me second guessing myself. Is she eating long enough? Especially since sometimes she only feeds for 5 minutes and falls asleep. And is her latch ok because while I'm not in pain she seems to have so much gas and hiccups. :( breaks my heart.

  • 1)how old is baby? Almost 2 weeks
    2) how long is baby feeding? An hour or more.
    3) does he/she take both breasts? Yes
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? No. He seems to wake up on his own every 3 hours.
    5) how often do you feed? Every 2-3 hours.
    6) any challenges or other questions??

Maintaining a milk supply and figuring him out schedule wise. It is hard to take him out and do errands.
  • 1)how old is baby?  Nine days
    2) how long is baby feeding?  I don't time it...  probably from 15-45 minutes
    3) does he/she take both breasts?   Yes
    4) are you waking the baby to feed?  No
    5) how often do you feed?  Every 1.5-4 hours
    6) any challenges or other questions??

I am very challenged!  Lol.  I had a breast reduction 20 years ago... which means a lot of supplementing...  which all happens at the breast with a Medela SNS.  She is still getting the hang of actually latching on well to get breast milk as well as the formula through the tubes.  Sometimes she just wants to sip on the straw daintily...  but then I have to try to re-latch her.  Sometimes we do this 30 times per side.  I tell you, it is A LOT of fun.

But otherwise, I cannot complain.  She is gaining weight nicely and is happy.  We have a few cranky feeds, but the last couple of days things have been better.

  • @ssstephanie214 My LO had a small posterior tongue tie.  We really struggled with whether or not to get it clipped because it was small and doing it would not necessarily help with all the issues we had (pain on my nipple while feeding, clamping, trembling jaw, weight loss, 10-12 sucks before swallowing).  We decided to do it because the risks were low compared to the potential benefits.  It's been about 10 days but I no longer have nipple pain when she feeds (which is only 2 short sessions a day at this point as we are retraining her muscles slowly), which is a victory to me.  It was difficult to do though (putting your child through pain) and she bled a lot (which is not super common from my informal poll of other moms who have done it) which was really tough.  PM me if you want to chat more.

1)how old is baby? she'll be 3 weeks on Tuesday
    2) how long is baby feeding? it's so random.... anywhere from 5 minutes on one side only to 15 minutes on both sides (so 30 minutes total)
    3) does he/she take both breasts? yes, but she definitely has a preference for my right one
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? yes, i've had to wake her during the day at the 3 hour mark. at night it's not been a problem, as 3.5 hours is the max she'll go.
    5) how often do you feed? also random - sometimes it's constant and will last for a few hours, sometimes it's every hour, sometimes it's every 2-3 hours.
    6) any challenges or other questions?? just the unpredictability of when she'll be hungry/ how long she'll want to feed for. Also, we're still getting a lot of visitors which is uncomfortable for me to manage. I'm finding myself craving a schedule.

    3) does he/she take both breasts? Very rarely
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? No not anymore since her two week appointment.
    5) how often do you feed? Can range from every 30 minutes to every 3 hours
    6) any challenges or other questions?? Trying to get her to feed long to be satisfied longer than 30 minutes. I'm hoping those times when she is feeding every 30 minutes it's because of a growth spurt and it will be over soon.

  • 1)how old is baby? 8 days old
    2) how long is baby feeding? About 10 min on each breast give or take.
    3) does he/she take both breasts? Yes
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? Sometimes during the day I aim for every 3 hours. I don't wake her at night.
    5) how often do you feed? About every 3 hours. Sometimes every 2.
    6) any challenges or other questions?? I had some trouble in the beginning figuring out the right latch. Cracked and bleeding nipples, then my milk really came in and I was super engorged. It was awful!!! Then I was dealing with oversupply but everything is finally getting better. It's only been a week but it was still rough.

My LO has a lot of hiccups and gas too! Do you have a fast letdown? I am attributing those to my milk coming out too fast for her.
Yea I do. She coughs every time. Lol. And then she pulls off for a second and her face is soaked. So I'm thinking it might be that. I thought our latch rocked so I hope it's not that.

    3) does he/she take both breasts? I only do 1 breast per feeding. If for some reason he's still rooting after 40ish minutes, I'll switch to the other breast
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? not anymore
    5) how often do you feed? DS usually sleeps in 3-5 hour stretches at night. During the day it's usually 1-3 hour stretches
    6) any challenges or other questions?? I'm still having issues with my left breast in terms of pain/damage

  • 1)how old is baby? 3 weeks tomorrow

    2) how long is baby feeding? Usually 10-15 minutes on each side. He'll hang out as long as I'll let him, and generally falls asleep on the second side. I burp in between sides.

    3) does he/she take both breasts? In general, yes. At his first morning feed, he takes only 1 and I pump the other.

    4) are you waking the baby to feed? I do if it's been more than 3.5 hours. He's only made it that long once, though!

    5) how often do you feed?
Every 1.5-3 hours. More frequently during the day.

    6) any challenges or other questions?? He has a slight tongue tie, but it doesn't really hurt to nurse. So we've decided not to fix it.

  • 1) How old is baby? 2 weeks tomorrow
    2) How long is baby feeding? 15-40 minutes or so
    3) Does he/she take both breasts? I've started offering only one breast at each feeding, and I stick to the same breast for 2-3 feedings. I'm worried about an overactive letdown, and I think baby was getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk, and I feel that sticking to one breast for an extended period is helping with that.
    4) Are you waking the baby to feed? Nope. Baby wakes up on his own.
    5) How often do you feed? Usually about every 2 hours. Last night was even more frequent.
    6) Any challenges or other questions? I don't think baby knows the difference between hunger and an upset tummy, and I worry that he is overfeeding and making the problem worse. I'm talking to the ped about it tomorrow.

I could have wrote this, our LO's are very similar! I deal with lots of gas/hiccups/etc as well. She was also gagging/coughing on my milk, I think I have an over-active supply and forceful let down. reclining back has helped tremendously with the gagging (which freaked me out) and I use a nipple shield which slows down the flow. She still get's the hiccups a lot and fusses before spitting up.. prob a little bit of reflux too. All babies have that though and pedi says all is normal!

  • 1) how old is baby? 3 weeks
    2) how long is baby feeding? generally 5 minutes each side. sometimes longer. sometimes less. but 5 minutes a side most of the time. (which would worry me but she's definitely gaining weight.)
    3) does he/she take both breasts? yes. but i'm thinking about trying one breast per feeding because i definitely have a overactive supple/forceful letdown and it seems to be getting worse.
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? during the day i have to some. i don't at night.
    5) how often do you feed? i shoot for every 2-3 hours during the day, but sometimes she goes longer. usually she goes anywhere from 3 hours to 4.5 at night. but sometimes 2 still.
    6) any challenges or other questions?? i have an overactive supply and forceful letdown. it's so stressful! often times she'll gag and pull off a lot. it breaks my heart. sometimes feedings go smoothly but sometimes it's just a mess... and it's a catch 22 because she tends to sleep long stretches, but the longer i go between feedings the worse it is. but when i wake her up to eat sometimes she'll end up throwing everything up because she wasn't ready. sigh... this is hard.

    1)how old is baby?
    6 weeks

    2) how long is baby feeding?
    Around 15 min on average.

    3) does he/she take both breasts?
Nope, not very often. We alternate for each feeding unless she seems to be getting frustrated, then I'll offer the other.

    4) are you waking the baby to feed?
Not anymore. I woke her every two hours at night until she surpassed her birth weight.

    5) how often do you feed?
On demand, which ends up being completely random hours during the day, but 3.5 at night nearly to the minute. I freaked out a couple of nights ago when I woke up to prep the canging table before she woke up (just by instinct) and realized I hadn't heard a peep out of her yet... I took my chances and went back to bed since she wasn't even stirring and had cluster fed for four hours before bed. We both slept another two hours!!! Divine, even if an anomaly.

    6) any challenges or other questions??
We've also struggled with my insane letdown. Sometimes after twenty minutes on one side, there is still a forceful stream when she releases so I do fear she's not getting adequate hind milk. I guess if she guzzles that much foremilk though, it balances out?

Also, she has gone from preferring righty with a master latch to ...clucking? I don't know how else to describe it, but her latch and interest on my right side has been lacking lately. Maybe it's just because she can't see the window. Hmm...

Aaaaaand she is incredibly difficult to burp! Every now and then she'll belch on her way to my shoulder, but more often the gas is trapped and we have to wait it out (which sucks for everyone if it takes too long). I've tried various burping positions, intervals, and technique (gravity, rubbing her back and belly, patting from very gently to more of thunks...) but the burp just won't always come up. I know it's in there- I heard air going down!

I think that sums it up. Sorry for the novella!

  • 1)how old is baby? - 5 weeks old
    2) how long is baby feeding? - 10-15 minutes
    3) does he/she take both breasts? - 7-8 minutes per breast
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? - No
    5) how often do you feed? - 10-12 times a day
    6) any challenges or other questions?? - Sometimes my LO has a lazy latch if she's drowsy. She also often falls asleep on the breast and the usual tricks to wake her up don't work at times. She also gets fussy at the breast and starts smacking my breast when she accidentally unlatches herself.
  • 1. 3 wks
    2. Would suck for all of eternity if I let her
    3. She sucks for 10 minutes or so and then passes out and sleep sucks. So I change her diaper, then she'll want the other breast for 10 minutes, then passes out again. Both breasts are completely drained at every feeding.
    4. No, she "demands" often enough.
    5. I'm not sure. Constantly?
    6. My challenge is that my supply has been too low for her. :( she literally whimpers as she feeds because she is starving. I give her an extra 2 oz. of formula at least 3 times a day to make her happy. I pumped yesterday while she was sleeping to make her bonus bottles from my own milk in an effort to force my supply to keep her pace, and realized I was only getting a half ounce per breast. No wonder she is always hungry! I bought the mammas milk tea from Target. So far I've drank two cups. I really hope it will help.

Clicking when nursing is baby losing suction. That can happen with a really big strong forceful let down. Usually due to serious oversupply.

Nurse baby uphill with their head higher than the breast. So laid back nursing side lying or football hold so gravity doesn't speed the flow of milk.
Don't encourage baby to drink from both sides, encourage them to get all they can out of side one. Burp more often and reoffer side one for more hindmilk. Don't pump if possible or pump less time so you don't encourage a higher supply.

Thanks, I definitely have a forceful letdown and we have been attempting the positions you mentioned most often. She hardly ever eats long enough to try the other side. We do sometimes have trouble with successful burping, though. It becomes frustrating for both of us when I'm burping her for more time than she's eating but I'll be more diligent... and hopefully we'll become more efficient.
I am also guilty of pumping in an attempt to build a stash for my return to work, but only pump once a day from the breast she did not eat from. I get anywhere from two to six ounces and do not pump beyond the initial slowing of flow. There have been times that there is a continuous stream of milk, I mean even without any vacuum, for a full minute or more! There's no stopping it. It's insane. Should I start pumping for a few minutes prior to feeding her instead?
  • @ssstephanie214 My little one was born with a moderate tie. The latch should not get worse, regardless of the tie. However, sometimes they learn that the extra effort isn't worth it when they can have the "easy" breast. I have one that is flatter too, and baby just gives up on it. We had my daughter clipped at 5 days because she was having trouble latching on both sides. It definitely helped, but it was heart crushing to see. They told us they only clip if there is a feeding issue. She was feeling better within 24 hours after the procedure. Hope that helps!

  • 1)how old is baby? - 12 days
    2) how long is baby feeding? - 10-20 minutes - usually closer to 10, unless she goes for both breasts - she can get the first breast close to empty and very soft in about 4 minutes, so I think she is a very fast eater and then she sort of comfort sucks
    3) does he/she take both breasts? - occasionally, but mostly no.  If she seems interested after the first breast is emptied I offer the second; sometimes she takes it, sometimes she doesn't.
    4) are you waking the baby to feed? - I don't need to, she wakes up, but I do set an alarm overnight just in case.....
    5) how often do you feed? - every 2.5 to 3 hours, regardless of day or night
    6) any challenges or other questions?? - I must have a quick letdown and lots of extra milk, LO often chokes and sputters at the breast.  We've tried the alternate holds but I haven't noticed an improvement.  Also, she has started vomiting after some of the feeds (not a lot, this is new).  I think it is only happening on the extra long feeds (and an overfull tummy?), so I'm going to keep an eye on not letting the timer go too long.

    6) any challenges or other questions? Currently weaning my right side. It's the side that always gives me the most struggles, and I'd rather not deal with them this time. She's a one-sided nursling. She's a fantastic nurser.
