Stockin Up On Diapers!

So i would really like to start stocking up on some disposable diapers for this LO especially if i run across any good deals now, but as a FTM i am absolutely clueless where to start. In my mind I'm looking at this the same as clothes i don't want to stock up on a ton of one size just to have them grow out of them before i can use them but tbh i am really clueless on how many diapers NBs actually go through in a day/month. Truthfully i don't really know much about diapers period lol i mean is it lucrative to develop a stock pile or maybe just a few boxes to get you through the initial week or so? And as far as sizes go do newborns generally wear the NB size for long?

So any tips, hints or helpful suggesting regarding this would be great. Thanks!

ETA: I'm adding wipes on to this as well. I have seen great deals on wipes but i feel like if i buy a bunch now and then she ends up breaking out from the first one then I'm stuck with a bunch of wipes i can't use lol is it common for babies to be allergic to just standard wipes?

Depending on the size of your baby at birth they may not be in newborn long or may be for weeks. My son couldn't fit in them one week after birth.

If the boxes are unopened though, I believe Target, Walmart and Babies R Us will let you exchange for different sizes of the same brand/type of diaper.

Target, Babies R Us, and diapers.com have rotating baby sales year long, so you can almost always find a decent price on a box.

If you really want to start now, you could just get a large box of newborns and size one and that would hold you the first several days/ couple weeks til you knew what sizes you needed.

  • My cousin had a big baby so she never used NB diapers.
Both of mine were 7 lbs so we used NB for months.
If you are going to stock up get a few NB and a box of size 1.
I have don't know any kids that have had allergic reactions to wipes, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. If you stick up I would start with the sensitive ones to be safe.
  • I have started stocking up as well, however do plan to get out my cloth diapers and give them another go with LO before I get rid of them (did not successfully cd with DS!)

Anyway, I think I have a box and a single pack or two of NB diapers, a few packs of size one and a couple of size 2. I already know I love Luvs but have gotten some others if on clearance or good sale. Keep them unopened and maybe attach receipt if you think of it (I haven't but got them all at target so far!) and exchange for sizes if needed. You can bet on using the most ones and twos since babies still go through many at that point but are a little bigger...

  • I've got two packs of newborn, 1's, and 2's. I actually got a pack of preemies, too. My DD was 4 lbs at birth and it was a scramble to find some. I don't want to get caught again. Better safe than sorry :)
  • My DD was 7lbs and used NB for about 2 weeks. Size 1's for about 2 months. She's 18 months now and been in size 4's for over 6 months. I say stock up on maybe 1 box of 1's, a few on 2's.

  • Before my son was born, we bought a box of newborn size Pampers Swaddlers and Pampers Sensitive wipes. The wipes were fine, but my son was born at 37 weeks weighing 5 lbs and newborn diapers were too big on him and we had to buy premie which he wore for a about a month. The tricky thing about buying diapers is you never know how big or small your baby may be at birth and if they'll have a reaction to a certain brand. It's kinda a trial and error thing.

I think the stock up prices are on the higher side, and I'm aiming for .10 for Size 1 to start with, but I'm being extra picky right now just because I know I still have time and I'll prob bump up my budget as we get closer if I'm not finding any/enough.

  • Stocking up on diapers is tricky IMO. Your baby may not fit certain diapers well, or may be allergic, or may leak with a certain brand. With my son it was trial and error, and it took us a few months to find the "perfect" diapers. I wouldn't want the added headache of trying to return/exchange diapers opposed to just buying them when needed, but that's just me.

Thank you SO much for sharing this link (& the site in general!) -- it's really helpful!!
  • I only bought a couple of packs of nb last time around and it was all I needed. DD was in size 1quickly. That being said, I suggest buying a couple different brands. DD didn't do well with Huggies (leaks and blowouts) so we became a Pampers household. I've heard the opposite from some others!

  • I, for one, am a huge fan of stocking up on diapers before baby. They're costly and don't expire, so to me, they are something I need to buy when the price is right. Currently I have sizes ranging from 1-3 (maybe 4?). Im not sure about everywhere else, but our hospitals are awesome about restocking newborn diapers during your hospital stay/sending you home with a bunch so I didn't buy any newborn. My daughter wore newborn for a while and then we started folding down size 1's a little as she gained weight (just fold over and tuck in the top flap). I buy them from target when there is a good gift card offer attached, use manufacturer coupons, and my red card to save whatever I can. Also, BJ's wholesale usually has a $4 off coupon which can be combined with manufacturer coupons for a big box of diapers. I just know that the last thing I'm going to feel like doing with two kids is running to the store to buy diapers at full price!
  • I'm on the "don't stock up" side of things.  Or maybe buy the smaller packs of multiple brands or call the company/go on their website and get samples before stocking up.  For instance, Huggie and Pampers (the regular ones) gave my son a rash.  Plus I couldn't stand the smell of Pampers.  It's what he wore in the hospital and I was happy to learn that not all diapers smell like that.  Naty and Huggies Free and Clear or whatever they are called worked great and didn't stink.  CVS brand also worked great.  Luvs were OK but fit him oddly.  You really just never know what will work or what won't.  If you regularly go to Target you can always return, but if you don't it's such a waste of time to go to return diapers.

Now he pretty much just wears Honest Co. sine we live so far from any store that sells diapers that ordering online makes more sense, and if we use coupons they are super cheap.
