Washing baby items prior to arrival, what detergent to use?

I'm about to start washing some of baby's clothing/blankets/towels. What detergent do you guys like? Do you wash everything you have? I fear washing the NB items. He didnt get a lot of those but definitely some. At the 32weeks ultrasound he was already 4lbs and 7oz (give it or take 10 oz - which I think is crazy). What did you ladies do?

Re: Washing baby items prior to arrival, what detergent to use?

  • I just freaked out for a little bit. I looked and we literally only have maybe 6 or 8 NB outfits.
  • Loading the player...
  • Glad to hear about any free and clear. I bought one container of Dreft (not opened yet) and thought it was so expensive. I'll be returning that.
  • I use All Free and Clear as well and like it. I do use the gel oxy clean stick to pretreat any stains.

I have a history of having little babies so I have a handful of premie outfits and a ton of newborn.

  • I also use All Free and Clear. I switched to washing all of our clothes with just to keep it simple.

I think I only have 2 or 3 new born. If he ends up tiny I'll be sending someone out to pick up and wash a few things for him! Lol
This. I have four newborn outfits and that's it. They only go up to 8 pounds...
  • I bought this organic free & clear stuff from Walmart, it was $8.97 for a pretty large container. I think it's called Ecos? I would go check, but I'm "flipped over turtle" status in my bed right now :/
  • We bought the BRU brand because it was on sale for $10. It lasts for 96 loads and is normally $22. We bought two so I hope we like it!

We don't have any NB outfits. Everything is 0-3 months, which includes newborns, right? The size chart says 7-12 lbs.

My son was 8.5 lbs at birth and was swimming in 0-3. They can wear it, but it will most likely be big. Newborns just aren't as filled out usually.

  • We use All free and clear, no fabric softener, and wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets.

  • I have no idea how big this baby will be. I was a pretty small baby (6lbs and 1oz), DH was pretty big (10lbs and 11oz).
  • Am I the only one who's only planning on using a special detergent if the baby breaks out in a rash? Otherwise I'll just use the regular stuff.

I haven't washed anything. I am kind of terrible at this whole about to be a mom thing.

I'm having lots of "oh shit" moments lately just thinking about how close I'm getting. I just got a bunch of boxes of clothes from my SIL this weekend and haven't even done an inventory of what's in there.
  • I have to use free and clear detergents for myself because of allergies to scents. It's my experience that while a little more expensive, the Tide free and clear works better. It is less harsh on my clothes and gets sweat and grease out better. I'll be using the same on the baby's clothes

We all have sensitive skin so that is just what we use. It isn't really anything special. I do miss the fresh laundry smell sometimes, but better for us to just go fragrance free.

  • We only use a free and clear detergent in our wash, due to my husband having sensitive skin. I get whatever's cheapest, which is usually Purex. I don't plan on buying and special detergent for this baby, and I plan on *gasp* washing the baby's clothes with the rest of the household's.

  • We have free and clear for the baby laundry (DS has sensitive skin). I use a scented detergent but I'm planning on switching us all to a cheap free and clear when we run out of what we have currently.

  • Yup free and clear and once baby is around us and our clothes, blankets etc if she doesn't break out then I'll slowly start using our regular Tide (or whatever fancy product is on sale!)

Umm am I the only one that washed EVERYTHING? lol Every size NB and up. ^#(^
  • I bought dreft the other day trying to get a head start on washing baby clothes. Was it a bad decision? Lol wish I would have seen this before. Anybody ever use it or had problems with it?
  • We used dreft to start with and it was fine. Free and clear is just less expensive because anyone can make it :)

And I will wait until a couple of weeks before baby to wash what we need.

  • I use SoapNuts for our kids. Anything with enzymes gave them a rash (Tide Free & Clear, Dreft, etc), and a lot of the natural alternatives contain coconut-derived ingredients which also gave them a rash although much less so than the enzyme products.

I alternate between Nellie's, Ecos, and a Free & Clear for the adult stuff - we don't use fabric softener anymore either.

This is what I use for all of our laundry. We buy the bigger containers from Sams club, and they last us almost 6 months!

I use any free and clear detergent, depending on what's the best deal when I'm purchasing. I'm not brand loyal, but I like Tide, All, and Arm & Hammer. I buy free & clear detergent for cloth diapers, towels, and DDs' sheets and clothes in the winter, when their eczema flares the most, and I buy good smelling stuff for me and DH most of the time. I'll use the free & clear on our stuff until I see how baby's skin is, and then gradually go back to regular for our stuff.

So far I washed three NB sleepers for baby boy. I'll only wash NB and a couple of 0-3 things at first, because I'll end up washing the bigger stuff again when he grows into it anyway. (I'm weird like that.) I guess I should wash some more of his stuff soon...

Regarding NB size, all of my kids were over 8 lbs at birth, and DD1 was over 9 lbs. They all still fit in NB, at least for a bit. DD1 wore it for two weeks and the other two wore NB for 4-6 weeks.

  • We are washing all the used stuff, I asked hubby to stop ripping tags off the little stuff in case we can return it, and anything small with a gift receipt is a wait and see if we need it. Sorting sizes to store, washing all the bedding and car seat covers and such.
I am using the Dreft I bought, but will probably go with a free and clear long run... if babies tolerate it :-)
