No Heartbeat Until 12 Weeks?!?

Okay, so my OB is saying that they won't check for my baby's heartbeat until I am 12 weeks pregnant. Am I the only that thinks this is crazy? Last time, I had my first U/S at 7 weeks. Thanks ladies!

Re: No Heartbeat Until 12 Weeks?!?

  • Maybe she is talking about a Doppler instead of US. I know it takes longer for that to work.

Every doctor's office is different. I remember reading sometimes it can't even be seen before 6-7 weeks anyway. I don't think 12 weeks is out of the ordinary for the first time, but I do know that makes your wait harder!

ETA for myself: I meant see not hear, oops!

    It makes the wait horrible!
  • The strange part is that at the same OB office they did my first U/S way earlier than 12 weeks. The NP also said that they were going to check for the heartbeat this week (at almost 8 weeks) with a Doppler, but OB said it's impossible to hear this early. The miscommunication is frustrating.

I know my OB won't try to find a HB with a doppler until 12 weeks. His reason is that it can be hard to find before then and he doesn't Like to scare people for no reason. Was there a reason you had an early u/s last time? Not all Dr's order them unless you are unsure of dates or have had previous complications.
    Edited: spelling

No, they said it was their standard timing for a transvaginal U/S. I was sure of my LMP and everything.
  • That's pretty routine. My doc usually doesn't try until 12 weeks. Her reasoning is the heartbeat isn't always picked up before 12 weeks by the Doppler. No need to stress a mama out when the baby is probably fine.
  • That's pretty common.  My MWs don't try to find the HB till the 12 week appt.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll just be patient and play the waiting game.
  • My last 2 pregnancies I was in at 10 weeks, this time around I have to wait until 12 weeks and it's driving me nuts! I'm assuming it's because of the holidays but it's torture. My BFF is a labor and delivery nurse and she said she may try to get me in to one of the ultrasound techs on a slow day so that would be awesome.

You are so lucky!! Hopefully she can get you in!
  • Last pregnancy, the midwife did a Doppler around 10 weeks I believe. .. and couldn't find the heartbeat. I was so friggin worried and stressed out until the next appointment. .. then it was clear as day as soon as the Doppler hit my belly! So all normal.

  • Same! Waiting is no fun.
  • I think it really just depends on the doc. I had a dating ultrasound which they do between 7 and 8 weeks. I go back at 12ish weeks for my NT scan.

  • My first appointment isn't until 10 weeks and they don't check for a h/b until 14 weeks at the next appointment. With DD the midwives couldn't find the h/b at 12weeks which was unnerving but then found it with no difficulties at 16weeks.

I was expecting a dating scan, but I guess not.
  • In the U.K. we have our dating scan at 12 weeks and a anomaly scan at around 20 weeks. You only get seen earlier or more if you have previous history of MC or a problem in the pregnancy. I don't see my community midwife that often either. :(
