2nd Trimester

Leg cramps anyone?!

Hi mums-to-be,

I'm almost 22 weeks and had my first excruciating leg cramp wake me up in the middle of Thursday night. It went away pretty quickly as soon as I hugged my knee to my chest but I've had a lingering pain in the back of my right calf for 2 days afterwards.

It's not stopping me from walking and feels more like a numb, bruised sensation like when you've been punched or had a jab in your arm. There is no redness or swelling or any change to my leg's appearance at all, it just feels sore?

Anyone else had this? I'm sure it's normal but I am worries about blood clots.

Thanks.

Re: Leg cramps anyone?!

  • I had leg cramps probably 4 or 5 nights per week with DD. Started in 2nd Tri and stayed through 3rd. They were never horrible but they were certainly annoying and a symptom I didn't know about.

  • Vitamin B and LOTS of water help prevent them, but they are totally normal in pregnancy

  • Thanks everyone. I wasn't worried about the cramp but the fact it's still sore 2 days later but I guess this is normal.

    Must drink more!
  • I haven't had this as a pregnancy symptom, but have experienced it as a sign of iron deficiency. I experienced it at a previous (non-pregnancy-related) time when I was recovering from significant blood loss. There was definite soreness afterward, as you described. It would seem logical that pregnant women need to be more vigilant about iron levels, particularly if you're not a big meat eater, so it might be something to get checked out by the doctor.
  • I woke up with a bad leg cramp one morning and the soreness lingered for a few days after. Ob said this was normal and recommended drinking more water and having a banana a day.
