SPD/Pelvic issues: Chiro helps!!! plus Carpal Tunnel

To all ladies having pelvic issues - I had terrible SPD with my first and sciatica with my second. I was told by my OB that it is a normal pregnancy problem and that there is not much to be done. SPD symptoms started again with this pregnancy.

I did a lot of reading this time around, and have been seeing a Chiropractor 2x per week. I still have some soreness, but the improvement is HUGE. I can usually walk without limping, I can go up the stairs with alternating feet, and I don't get the stabbing pinching pain. Sitting for too long or doing too much makes it worse, but I feel so much better than before.

Also, I asked my chiropractor about carpal tunnel as I am starting to get numbness in one hand almost all day. She says that it is normal and should resolve after delivery. However she also recommended massage therapy for an area around my armpit and neck where there is some tightness, and said it could reduce the symptoms. Anyone have experience with this? I am going to start next week and hoping to get an allover massage covered as well.

Re: SPD/Pelvic issues: Chiro helps!!! plus Carpal Tunnel

  • I'm glad you've gotten some relief! It is honestly one of the worst pains I have ever experienced. I haven't tried a chiro but I did get a si-loc maternity belt (https://www.optp.com/Maternity-SI-LOC-Support-Belt#.VHd4goo8LCR) and it has helped tremendously to the point that I have started going for long walks again and working out. I wear 24 hrs a day.

I'm sorry I can't help with the carpal. But I hope you find something that helps!

  • I also have SPD pain. Its terrible. I have started seeing a physical therapist for my pain. She gave me a belt as well as tips on maneuvering my body, especially at night since that seems to be the worst for me. She will be starting pelvic floor strengthening excercises with me next week.

  • I see a chiro twice a week for the same issue. Just started 3 weeks ago and iItis amazing. I can actually walk the dog not pain free but with less pain.

  • I had terrible hip pain in my first pregnancy. OB told me to suck it up, its normal. I could hardly walk, taking baby steps everywhere. Finally went to chiro once a week and what a world of difference! So I definitely echo your thoughts.

Luckily this pregnancy hasn't been too bad, I see my chiropractor as needed which is typically every 4-6 weeks. Am having some weird cold thigh/butt issues now, so I might go in to see if anything needs adjusting, perhaps something is pinched.

  • I had carpal tunnel with my first. I think I slept with my wrists bent. I started sleeping with wrist splints and it got better.
  • I've been seeing my same chiropractor this whole pregnancy. I'm not sure I'd be able to walk without him! He may also come to the hospital to adjust me if needed.
