My MIL has a bad case of baby rabies.

Tell me I'm not alone here. Ok so I am out of state visiting my ILs. My MIL cries everytime she sees LO and goes BSC over her. I mean loses her shit. It's a blur of baby talk nonstop and she won't put her down or stop staring at her like my LO is her next meal or something. She said today that she is making Christmas cards with pictures of LO. Is that weird? Shouldn't the parents be sending out a photo card for baby's first Christmas? And she hands me a baby's first Christmas ornament. I tell her thank you. Then she says "no that's not for you, that's for MY tree". Really? It's not your fucking baby and we aren't even coming back here for Christmas so WTF. AND...she made an entire baby book of LO for herself. Is this normal because I think she is fucking crazy!!!!

  • @becominggold‌ you would find me in a straight jacket if I we lived in the same state! Never going to happen'
  • Wow. Yeah, that is nuts. I'm thankful for my MIL's brand of crazy now.
  • That is crazy. Do you think maybe she wishes she had more children and is trying to live vicariously by doing this?

  • @SoSayWeAll‌ that could very well be part of the problem. DH is an only child and her "miracle baby" as she had a lot of female reproductive problems and was told she couldn't have kids. I just don't know how to handle the crazy and DH doesn't really see it because he has grown up with this shit. I'm going mad and we aren't leaving until Sunday.
  • My mother has done all the above with both of my children now. Heck we had to make a special trip to get her Christmas card photo taken at the arboretum. Well we did the ornament for both grandmas and put all the grandbabies on it, but same idea. Grandma wants to show off the baby to all her friends. Maybe be thankful mil is proud of her grand baby? There are women who would love to be in your shoes.

  • Wow.... just wow.

I sincerely don't know how I'd handle that situation.  It sounds like she has some serious emotional scarring from her own infertility, but that doesn't really excuse the crazy.... just explains it

  • That sounds intense and annoying but not unforgivable. She sounds like a doting grandma who's beyond excited and who also has some boundary issues. I hope you can help her channel her enthusiasm to serve your purposes eventually.
  • I'm working on accepting the crazy in my own family so no advice but I do enjoy scrolling through and seeing this title, it makes me chuckle.

  • @jillelizabeth2‌ that is so odd.

Op I get having a Christmas ornament and being a proud grandparent for the Christmas card. Is this her first grandchild?

My mil made a scrapbook too of all my pregnant weekly bump pictures for herself. I thought it was creepy
  • It's not a scrapbook, it's a baby book. A baby book that I thought only parents filled out since it has a lot of personal details in it. She does a lot of "my baby", "does my baby want a bite of pie" blah blah boundary stomping. "When you stay with me I'm going to give you soda and gum and anything you want". I do think it's weird and inappropriate and it drives me up the wall.
  • This is the same woman who still has DHs high chair out at the dining room table.
  • Okay, the baby book is weird. A photo book, understandable and normal. Baby book, no.
  • I agree, baby book is way different than a scrapbook and kind of weird. I am sad for her though, with the fertility issues. I'm sure that's contributing.
